But I thought the saying goes something like: "A Rolls is for being driven, a Bentley you drive yourself"?
@mauriciolacruz4 жыл бұрын
My opinion: 1. A Bentley is meant to be driven by yourself, while a Rolls Royce is more meant to be driven by a chauffeur (although you can really do any of those things with any of these brands). 2. You could also tell the chauffeur to change the volume to your needs. That steering wheel buttons lack is a "big" lack.
@gabrielgant39714 жыл бұрын
If the remote was for the person in the back the remote holder wouldn't be on the driver door but in the back. Traditionally a Bentley is more to drive than to be driven in.

They never did, at least not in the last 60 years or so. Their engineering, ergonomics, quality of construction, reliability, etc. leave a great deal to be desired. But some of the older models did have very nice interiors. I wonder if they ever got around to putting stronger head gaskets into the turbo charged engines. My bet is that they didn't. That means about 50K miles on the red label model before it leaks. The BMW engine in the green label is more solid, I guess.

Very well done! I thought the turn signal issue was something that was just plain tacky on their part. Screams of VW. The other thing is there's no outside air temp. My Silver Spurs, TurboRT and others had an OAT. Even my Suburban! But not the Arnage! This is sacrilege! On another note, at least you have working cupholders. Not mine. The BMW slide out cupholder has disintegrated, just like the same cupholder did on my 740iL. Because it was the same cupholder. In defense of BMW, I love the A/C control head. It works very well in the Arnage. I can't think of many cars that are as much fun to drive. And yes, us big boys should have more room. My beef is the fuse block on the kick panel. That thing sticks out and resting my foot there is a bit uncomfortable. I have bad knees. So the typical flat floor English car has always been more comfortable. I'll put up with this. I'm about to rip out the radio and install an Android radio. Don't need the antenae that doesn't work. Touch screen and steering wheel controls, as well as built in GPS that doesn't use a disc. Download whatever I want and it's good times. Thanks for the video.

2 Observations in this. 1) Single Turn Signal Light, If you can't remember which direction you have turned, then you are NOT QUALIFIED to DRIVE A BENTLEY . . . 2) Phone in Central Armrest, The Factory Supplied Phone is registered to you and your Bentley. It is used to contact the Bentley Service Agency in situations such as, Emergency Road Service, In Use Service, The RARE Breakdowns while traveling, and, Accommodation Reservations when traveling, by the Passenger. So you are not distracted from SAFE DRIVING. Also for use by your Chauffeur, for informing him you are ready to depart . . . Probably didn't think of those, did you ? . . .
@gaelenski_8 жыл бұрын
That turn signal thing is actually more common than you think. I can think of several cars that utilise that style, one example being the original BMW Mini. I had a Fiat Punto as my first car that also had that singular dash light no matter which way I was indicating.

Most of them can be taken care of if you did not buy a now 25 year old design, but chose instead an affordable (even if less attractive) Bentley Flying Spur or whatever, the sedan version of the Continental coupe. It has vastly more space and is a far more recent design. If you can afford it, get the updated version, a much younger car that looks better.

Bit of insight about the turn signal light. Loads of cars had a single one back in the 80's, especially British ones. Bentley has basically been using this same instrumentation since the 80's (the digital odometer is new as is some of the other indicators but take a look at a 1989 Turbo R binnacle to see what I mean).
@JoshsWorld7 жыл бұрын
+Ralph Hardwick The Turbo R has a similar binnacle, but actually has separate turn indicator lights for the left AND right. Oddly, my newer Arnage only has one indicator light for both directions.
@ruk2023--7 жыл бұрын
JoshsWorld.com that's odd. I only watched a turbo r video before watching yours and I don't usually miss details but reviewing it again I mistook the headlamp on green indicator for the turn signal. Maybe they ran out of room for new lights and couldn't afford or didn't want to redesign the cluster.
@JoshsWorld7 жыл бұрын
What's even more odd... on the Arnage there is a separate icon for the hazard lights. This could have easily been the other turn signal. The logic here is baffling. You don't need a separate indicator for hazards if you have a light for each direction.
@ruk2023--7 жыл бұрын
It's a British car, you're pushing it a bit expecting logic. Don't forget, we put a square steering wheel on a car once (Austin Allegro I'm looking at you).

I use the old Alpine frame, but the screen is now a modern Garmin unit. To fasten the frame to the roll up flip it's used magnets on the inside of the frame, and a pin at the bottom. I've always heard horror stories about cost-of-ownership in a used Bentley, but I figured it was one of the best built cars on the road, so if you get a low-mileage example that has been well cared for, it should last for years with minimal repair cost.
@JoshsWorld2 жыл бұрын
"Well cared for" is the key.
@neilkearney8172 Жыл бұрын
@@JoshsWorld "Well cared for" will save you tens of thousands of dollars. The "Gadget Guy" spent over 40 grand getting his auction-bought 2005 Arnage with a gorgeous interior back into shape. It did run before he bought it but showed "check engine". The hammer price was 36 grand at the auction. Of course, if you go to a Bentley dealer, like Gadget Guy did, you should not be surprised when they politely instruct you to bend over. A specialist independent shop would have charged half as much. But half is still twenty grand -- on a car where a belt change was the biggest single item of work. The same kind of overhaul on a V-12 S class would have been less than 10 grand -- at a Benz dealer. Then Gadget Man cheerfully spent ten thousand more perfecting everything, only to sell the car soon after. Why? Perhaps he finally did the research that I did, and discovered that the twin turbo cars built prior to 2007 have bad camshafts. Failure is catastrophic -- more expensive to fix than the car is worth. The sword of Damocles lifts every time you turn the key and push the start button. So, the reason these cars have depreciated so much has nothing to do with poor fuel economy.

Nice set of wheels, but you hit on the real problem which is maintenance and repair. Parts and labor costs on any RR product will make you wish drove a bicycle. By the way, "Grey Poupon" mustard is owned by Kraft/Heinz and is made in Pennsylvania, but they are moving to a plant in Michigan....which is slightly closer to France. (If you fly the polar route)

Thanks. While parts/labor are pricey, many internet tales of Bentley maintenance are drastically overblown.

I would be pretty irritated if I had to deal with the cup holder situation, I carry a drink with me every where I go. I’m sure they intended most owners to have drivers, so they could have hid the cup holders on purpose; but if that was the case you would think the cup holders in the rear would be more convenient and not on the floor.

Honestly, your complaints about the cup holder and the ancient Nokia phone/charger is pretty valid. I would have been more annoyed than you seem to be.

The Grey Poupon jokes would be the worst. It's like Back to the Future jokes when you own a DeLorean. Edit: I wrote that comment JUST before un-pausing and hearing you say the exact same thing lol!

Volkswagen used that single light for the turn signals for years.
@JoshsWorld7 жыл бұрын
Probably because it was an efficient way to do it. This is a Bentley. Efficiency has no business here! :)
@pmvaldez17 жыл бұрын
JoshsWorld.com probably so. VW used it until 1993 when the Mk3 Jetta/Golf came out. As I recall, the older Mk2 cars had 5 warning lamps, oil, battery, high beam, signal and either the O2 or glow plugs depending on engine. Those were the days....

8. Leave the covers on. You won’t see it. 7. You don’t need music. 6. iPhone sits in the door handle perfect. 5.your too tall 4. Cup holders in the front of the centre armrest on the Red Label so not a problem. 3. Buy something cheaper to run 2. It’s deemed your smart enough to know which way your turning. 1. Bentley is for driving not for sitting in the back! That’s why you buy a Rolls Royce.

I think the lack of cup holders was intentional by Bentley as well as other fine auto manufacturers. These types of cars are meant for driving not picnics. My 94 Mercedes SL 500 have none and my 2006 Range Rovers are worthless. I guess creativity is the order of the day.

The ergonomic shortcomings and weird design elements are well-known to those familiar with the cars. The "engineering" nuttiness is soon discovered by the neophytes when they attempt to "maintain" the things. That's why they depreciate like rocks dropped down a well and you see them offered with stats like 30,000 miles and 6 owners.

I have the Bentley GT and I have to agree with not having a place to put my phone (iPhone X) doesn’t fit in the ash tray even with it out and no cup holder...what the hay??? You can tour but no eating allowed.

I used to have people pull next to me at lights and ask for Grey Poupon so I carried some hotel sized jars with me to give out.

I own a 2000 jaguar vaden plas. it's interior must have been inspired bye this luxury brand. I also have a pair of picnic tables in the back seats and the wood work is fair in comparison. The metal and leather work on a Bentley are far superior though.
