Agreed. Everytime Anakin would find a weakness in it, he would start working on improving the form. After his first duel with Dooku, he refined Shien to make it work better for a single opponent, leaning towards Djem So. After he took on the Darth Vader suit, he took elements from other styles (most notably Makashi, you can clearly see that Darth Vader is rather precise with his blows like a Makashi user would be) to refine it even further and make up for the fact that the suit didn't match his fighting style, which did make Vader an easier target for Jedi at first even though Vader would ultimately win against them (there were times where Vader had near-death moments before he started refining Djem So to make it work in tandem with his suit).

Very good description of form 5 and if I were a jedi of the New Jedi Order I would comment in a journal of mine that Great Master Luke Skywalker was not just the master of Djem So but the Ultimate Master of Djem So considering he was the founder of the ultimate key to mastering Djem So through compassion, a jedi did not love battle but wanted to end conflict through an aggressive means but was filled with compassion.

Memestreamer Inc. Anakin uses a hybrid of Ataru and Shien/Djem So, it is only in later years as Darth Vader does he demonstrate a "purer" example of Djem So. I put inverted commas because his personal style consists of many Forms built upon a foundation of Djem So. His rematch with Obi-Wan on the Death Star is a great example of a cautious Djem So user. On Cloud City we see him lose his cool and hammer away at Luke, driving him back with signature overhand chops. That's in the movies anyway. But in the EU I agree Anakin has demonstrated some good examples of Djem So. - The finale of his duel with Ventress on Yavin IV (CW) - His duel with Dooku in Theed (TCW) - His duel with Barriss Offee (TCW)

Interesting. The jedi were concerned about Shien/Djem So's aggressive nature but had no qualms using the Ataru form wich is at least similar in terms of aggression. If I were a Jedi I would use both varients of Form V. If you are in perfect physical shape you could use them both exclusivly in almost every situation. As a fallback option I would also use Shii Cho, Makashi and Soresu.

I think thats kind of a misconception about Form V; conservative Jedi master believe it encourages aggression and dominance, but i think they're mistaken. Djem So in particular doesn't necessarily encourage one to be aggressive ( Ataru) nor to be vicious (Juyo/Vaapad); what it really encourages is one to be _strong._ Firm but unrelenting. Powerful, unyielding strikes backed up by a strong but patient defense. I think the thing about Ataru was that the Jedi liked how it taught them to constantly let the Force continuously flow throughout their body. i think Ataru lets a Jedi have the most raw connection to the Force because of that. And by "Aggression" Im sure it meant simply taking the initiative to take down an opponent swiftly but not necessarily lethally, whereas Form V's more kinetic strikes can cripple weaker foes through the sheer kinetic energy alone. I'm more of a Soresu kinda of practitioner but I would fall back on Djem So if a situation calls for more aggression. I might also take up some Ataru for its versatile training regimen (Jar'kai and Teras Kasi).

If I were a Jedi I would probably mix this form and form 3 so I could wear my opponent out while they tried to break my defence and finish them quickly using fierce power and speed as I had spent the majority of the fight until then expending minimal energy waiting for them to tire.

+SithReign I am doing some research of my own into Form V and I have a theory that Djem So is originally an ancient Sith fighting style. Although my theory is primarily personal supposition, I believe that the Jedi adopted Djem So during or after the Great Hyperspace War, after seeing the brutal effectiveness of the style in the hands of the Sith. Rather than create a new form, they integrated it into their traditional Form V called Shien, using Form III as the basis of this new powerful fighting style. With Soresu as its foundation, Jedi Djem So maintained both a stonewall defence and a calmer mentality to help keep a Jedi in the light and not let their emotions rule them in battle. What do you think? Could this be a plausible origin theory of Djem So?

Other than a couple exceptions, The Sith used only 2 forms you’re right on that part, They only used form 5 and form 7. Which they referred to as strong style and fast style. Read the Sith handbook and read how Darth Bane explains them.

I like your theory, it’s definitely possible, however unlikely. Why? The Jedi were abhorrent of anything having to do with the Sith. The Jedi are very powerful warriors. Bcuz they had power, the vast majority were taught & adopted the attitude of passiveness and humility. Favoring peace over aggressiveness. However, that did not stop a select amount of Jedi from favoring and highlighting far more aggressive forms of combat. The only two that come to mind, are Mace Windu & Anakin Skywalker. Both loved to fight & were not afraid to revel in it. Even so, that did not make them evil. Mace Windu had such a love for fighting, he created a variation of Juyo, Vapaad, form Vll. In order to increase his power yet suffice his desire for power. This allowed him to utilize the dark side, somethin no Jedi before or after him were ever able to achieve successfully. Anakin Skywalker was emotionally unstoppable if pushed to far. That was his greatest weakness. However, if Skywalker had mastered his emotions, he would’ve no doubt been able to use the dark side to an unfathomable degree.. had he lived up to his full potential.

Shein also had blocks and parries with some attacks including counters for saber-wielding foes. Dejem So was the opposite with some blocks and parries with mostly attacks to include counters.

Yes, I've been looking into the differences between the forms but so many cast aside the ability for shien to handle saber combat and djem so to handle blasters. Each focuses on one but can handle the other.

I would argue that post defeat Vader never used form 5 effectively; his suit just wouldn't allow that kind of movement or Vitality. To my understanding Vader cherry picked parts of every stance and distilled them into a new form tailor made for his limitations. The Rise of Darth Vader was a fun book for me. He had abandoned traditional forms to such a degree* that a surviving Master was unsure which form to use and, upon discovering Vader's weakness, was forced to also abandon traditional forms. What followed was a long chaotic battle where the Master couldn't hit his chest panel and Vader couldn't pin him down for a death blow. It was a battle of force power and attrition which Vader prevailed. *The Jedi Master even mentions that the base stance of Vader's form is so archaic that he had trouble placing it.

One of the things I loved about TFA and TLJ was Kylo Ren. Kylo Ren had the most depth, the most development out of all the characters in the show. Even in his form and his lightsaber. I noticed that Kylo Ren focuses on both Forms 1 and 5. Just as depicted in TFA he use a lot of brute strength and follows through with each strike. His footwork closes inward towards his opponent, batting away at their defenses until a decisive strike is made. I also noticed in TLJ, he was skilled in Form 1 for his usage of wide strikes and guards, disarming tactics, and the ability to fend off multiple attackers. It was a bit sloppy, but noticeably there. Form 5 was the form that Anakin Skywalker and Darth Vader loved using the most, and it was also the Form Luke used to defeat Darth Vader. It's only natural that the Remnants of Darth Vader would have passed on such teachings to Kylo Ren. However, Kylo's usage of Form 1 seems to be a choice of his own, showing that he displays some tactical genius. Even his lightsaber, built with a cross guard, is perfect for both Form 1 and Form 5, as it allows him to use it for trapping and disarming lightsaber resistant weapons, in TLJ, while it adds another layer of protection from hand strikes while he uses Form 5 (people that use form 5 have a tendency to get their hands chopped of). Even the sloppiness in his form shows that he's still developing his skills, yet he's still determined to win. I don't know if this detail was due to the actor playing Kylo, J. J., or Rian Johnson (doubt it), but it's probably the silver lining of Disney Star Wars to me.

So in your opinion a physically strong person with very low stamina should use which form? I was thinking for practice I go with a hybrid form II and III or this form. But I have asthma that hampers my ability to dish out long offenses. I can do short, very powerful spurts but I also prefer precision over speed or strength. I have broken through many of my friend's defenses though. My one friend told me his arm was shaking until the next day after I used a double overhanded vertical slash on him. He basically dropped his saber because his arm went numb lol. Well I am also 6'3 and he's 5'10 so I had strength and reach on him.

The problem is form 4 will leave your asthma at its worst if you're unable to get the advantage. Form 2 is great for precision but it limits the ability to power through. With such a limitation as asthma, form 2 with short bursts of 5 following a counter could work well. Or you know, you could uh try sucking it up and fighting against your asthma, thus just fighting however you want. Easier said than done though.

Interesting how these forms are based increasingly on strength and brute force. It’s as if the Jedi have forgotten their philosophy of defense first. I agree the Clone Wars had much to do with the Jedi losing their focus and identity. Gotta hand it to Darth Sidious for strategizing the downfall of the Jedi Order. If it wasn’t gonna fall from Order 66, it would’ve fallen from too many disillusioned Jedi succumbing to the Dark Side.

Nobody could withstand a true form 5 master’s onslaught, like Anakin Skywalker or Darth Bane. mace didnt' lose the fight to palpatine. he was betrayed by anakin. What is interesting is that if mace's style did not require the dark side as a feature, he would have known not to kill palpatine but to leave him to the justice system of aldaraan. this is part of why anakin saw the jedi as evil as well.

Tbh it sounds like your just doing the shein varient with extra steps. Shein was founded off makashi, soresu, and ataru to allow greater mobility and redirection of all attacks. People really don't give shien enough love when it comes to saber to saber combat.

So many of these videos talking about form V completely skim by shein so I've gotten a little defensive of the form. I would still agrue that starting from shein might be easier as a base and modifying from there due to you wanting to incorporate the same 3 forms that originally made shien in the first place

I like shien much more than Djem so. its much more versatile and it has better defenses. interesting fact about shien it was created by combing elements of makashi,and Ataru with a base of soresu.

This would be my form. 5'11 and being a rugby player as well as a lot of fitness from being a regional swimmer would give me the fitness I would need to keep going. Love Djem So so much. not that overpowered? Djem so's weakness of lack of mobility. Ataru only made up for some of it. And hello? Anakin was the master of form 5 and used form 4 to make up for djem so's deficiencies.

At that speed you'd give up some of the patient defense that the form was based apon. It'd still be good but it'd be better to focus on ataru for the speed and mix in a little djem so for defence and power strikes than to focus on djem so and try to mix in ataru for the speed. I think I'd skip djem so and focus on shein; possibly mixing in some ataru to start the fight with a force embued charge to give my oponits less time to attack, shake them up, and give them the wrong impression of which form I faver.

Luke Skywalker also uses Djem So because he seemed to use his father's form in the final battle aboard the second death star. Djem So is natural for Luke.

Redundant, this question may be. But what the fuck did Luke use in combat? Seems like he would inherit Form 3 because Obi-Wan but Empire would suggest a form of Ataru when he fought Vader and seemed to be the aggressor at the start of the battle and the fact that he had just been taught by Yoda. Form 4 seems to be on a more full display all throughout Return, especially in the final duel with Vader. I assume that Luke’s form was a mixture of Obi-Wan Kenobi and Yoda’s teachings cause the ways of the Jedi were lost to the ages and they were the only ones left and both men’s strength in the Force had severely diminished but idk.

In the Book of Sith, Luke leaves an annotation where he states that his overall style is a combination of Forms III, IV and V. Or perhaps it’s in the Jedi Path book. It’s in one or the other. Up until his training with Yoda I’d say he was a purely Form I user (based on his brief basic training with Obi-Wan in A New Hope), perhaps then learning elements of Ataru from the Grand Master. In between Empire and Jedi, when Luke constructed his new lightsaber on Tatooine he came across Obi-Wan’s journal and learned Form III. His knowledge of Form V most likely comes from personal combat experience against Darth Vader.

Lean Deer Form V had two variants Shien and Djem So. Shien is weak against single opponents, but very effectiv against multiple, blaster wielding opponents. Djem So is a powerfull dueling style but is lacking in terms of mobility.

Lean Deer it is weak against Soresu because Soresu is a whole lot less physically demanding and a form 5 practitioner would get tired quicker and make mistakes. Form 3 is a resilience form so a practitioner of form 3 would outlast a form 5 practitioner.

Darth Vader never switched from Djem So when he got the suit, he just modified the style to make up for his suit's limitations by implementing elements of other styles. Even if he does incorporate other styles though, in essence, he still uses Djem So.

This is my favourite form.. so far.. Is there a form where you would not get into trouble even if you completely let yourself into the dark side? I really can't convince myself that Mace Windu is using form 7 because his duel with Palpatine was not too aggressive..Anakin is more aggressive in his duel with Obiwan, and also Luke when he finally broke in his 2nd duel with Vader.. But I think the duel that most exemplified form 7 is Anakin vs Ventress in the 2D Clone Wars when he got hold of the red lightsabre and bludgeon Ventress into defeat..

Yeah the movies were pretty bad at portraying lightsaber duels. (Palpatine should have been around 10x faster as well, but that just wasn't possible on screen). If you read the Episode 3 book, by Matthew Stover, you will understand just how powerful Mace's Form 7 Vaapad was (especially during that fight). Oh, and, there is a whole comic series on how he uses Form 7 (and developed a variant) xD So he definitely is. You can't judge anything really from the screens.
