this is awesome! Thank you. I've watched 5 other tutorials for this song and no one could explained the strumming as well as you! Much appreciated.

One of those songs that I just thought was OK until I started playing it on guitar and now I love it. Also a song that illustrates how contemporary pop/rock/folk songs (especially guitar-centric music) often pay little heed to diatonic concepts of functional harmony.
@songnotes2 жыл бұрын
Same exact boat! Never learned it until this past month, as I didn't think there'd be much to it. But found it super enjoyable once I really worked out the finer points of the timing, along with the walkups/walkdowns and strumming (etc). The functional harmony aspect - to be honest I'm very much a novice with this - but I'll say that the "unconventional" chords this song uses (B7, A, E - when it appears to be in the Key of G) took me a while to get used to. But super fun to read more about what's going on - e.g. like on this post forum.emusictheory.com/read.php?5,2444

@@songnotes One of the concepts I've come to subscribe to after reading comments by others who know a a whole lot more than I ever will about music, is that so much of what we enjoy musically is not born from theory (e.g., composers using theory to come up with ideas) but rather, from (a) a combination of the instruments we play encourage us to make certain choices, and (b) repetition (what we get used to and come to expect). On guitar, there are about 10 basic chords that we all learn early on and at most 6 would be in any given key. But over the decades, guitarists have learned how to work those others in as well to good effect. So in G, it's not so unexpected that a good guitarist would find a way to get an A or B7 or E in there. And then, the more that we hear it, the more 'natural' those chord movements sound. Also, as in comedy, I think a lot of musical enjoyment comes from a combination of having expectations (e.g., of the next chord) and then having a pleasant surprise when those expectations aren't met. Anyway, it's an interesting topic. I really enjoy your videos. You're a natural at this.

with your last filler strum on the B7, it is impossible to play the C in time, its normally an open up strum on the high E and B string when i play it, that gives you time to transfer to C
