Kathryn Howard is the one I feel the worst for because she was just SO young, even for the time period and never had a chance. Remember, she was only about 15 when she met Henry. She was groomed, used, abused and then executed. All by the age of 17-19 (historians aren’t sure of her birthdate). Henry VIII was 50 when he married her. It was absolutely a travesty. She never had a chance. She was dumped on the Dowager Duchesse’s doorstep at about 8. Let’s just say the morals were loose and she spent her entire childhood looking for someone to love her. Then she was trotted out to the king by her uncle, the Duke of Norfolk when Henry got tired of his 4th wife. Oh yeah…she was Anne Bolyen’s cousin.

His 4th wife he married out of public pressure, feeling her portrait wasn't painted accurately. They never consummated the marriage and he gave her a title and property to annul it. He never really loved her and I believe she was his cousin or something.

She gave the King a divorce, was allowed to stay in England thus escaping being returned to her brother and the marriage market, was treated as the King’s sister, and was made the second wealthiest woman in England second only to Mary, the king’s daughter. She lived through the rest of Henry’s reign, Edward’s reign and most of Mary Tudor’s reign. By all accounts she was happy and generous and lived a good life, albeit with a few ups and downs. Anne of Cleves and Henry weren’t related (unless EXTREMELY distantly). The divorce was granted on non-consummation and the fact that there was already a contract of marriage with someone that predated hers with Henry. It was basically an excuse, by that time he felt himself very in love with Kathryn Howard.

It'd be better to react to the Samantha Pauly live version of this now so you can see the emotions and meaning behind the song that the studio recording version doesn't have. The commenter Rebecca Fraser illustrated the reality of Katherine's situation perfectly, but yeah watch the live version since it shows that she really didn't want any of these things to happen to her and that she was being used by the men around her.

Yes. I feel like this video totally misses the point of the song, and that's mostly because the recording can't convey the same emotion facial expressions and body language convey. Chelsea Dawson was phenomenal in this role.

I definitely agree. I’ve seen other live videos of Aimie Atkinson singing this song and they definitely have way more emotion than the studio recording, although I do have to agree that Samantha Pauly’s version is one of the best because she just puts so much emotion into the song, although I also think Vicki Manser’s version is really good too!

I have seen a video of Tsemaye Bob-Egbe, the current actress playing Katherine Howard in the West End cast, and her version is up there with Sam Pauly. I was in tears at the end of her song.

I was scanning through your videos and noticed you have some great past performances of singers. Some few people know about or may not have had experience with. I have notice numerous reaction KZbinrs seem to copy from each other. You don’t seem to follow into that same category. That’s a good thing not to follow the mundane copy cycles of others too much. The World has a lot of amazing talent from the past to present. I am 72 years old and follow & collect artist I had no experience with in my past growing up and born in America. I don’t do reaction videos, have no personal interest in it doing it myself. I just like the journey of discovering artists for my own personal collections from KZbin over the many years. I researched many of them on Wikipedia to learn more about them. I think it is important to learn about the many artists I listen to over the years. What I learned through my research is how famous they were in their own regions of the World and in their own languages but not necessarily known in America. I like collecting KZbin concerts and playlist albums from other KZbinrs from around the World in different languages. Like many other people I have my favorites I listen to. Some are very famous for their emotional singing and their unique voices I never had experienced before.

Her music teacher manipulated her into thinking she was in love at 13 years old. Then when she came across the next guy at about 14, she already had the wrong idea of what to look for in love because of the first guy so he manipulated her for sex too. After that disaster, she decided she didn’t even want love anymore - she was done. When she met Henry he was around 50 and she was 17. All he did was give her a high ranking position at first - a job in the king’s castle. She finally felt happy with where she was, but then Henry decided he wanted her - and when a king makes a demand, he gets what he wants. She didn’t get a choice; he married her and that was that. Now we aren’t entirely clear on exactly what went down historically, but she ended up being accused of adultry. The guy she presumably cheated with was a friend of the king who had already been pardoned from multiple rape accusations. I’d guess the song is implying that he raped her so then the king beheaded her for the crime of adultry rather than create tensions in his court. She was 19 when Henry killed her.
