The section with the modulation that you're hearing is actually the old English folk song 'Greensleeves'. It was widely believed that Henry VIII wrote the song about his 2nd wife Anne Boleyn so the composers have sampled that song in this one. It's a great musical and each song is completely different from the rest!

Another fun fact: The line "My sleeves may be green but my lipstick's red" and her connection to Greensleeves isn't because her sleeves were literally green (though some were). It's a subtle reference to how some ladies of court would gain stature and favor, but at the risk of green grass stains on their skirts.

Some fun little things that you wouldn't know unless you are a bit more aquainted with their story: -"Divorced, Beheaded, Died, Divorced, Beheaded, Survived" Is an existing Rhyme about the sic Queens, that's why K.Howard saiys "I've been just _one word_ in a stupid Rhyme" - The Instrumental part in exwives is a song called "Greensleeves" and the myth is that Henry wrote it for Anne Boleyn ("my sleeves may be green") though that has been historically refuted.

If you’re going to listen to all of the songs (which i hope you do) just know that there is an extra song which isn’t on the soundtrack - the Megasix - its essentially a mashup of a ton of the other songs (there are a lot of musicals that do this kinda thing, it’s usually known as a megamix - but this is probably my favourite). I don’t think there was ever an actual studio recording of it so you might have to look for a bootleg version!
@Randomner25623 жыл бұрын
To add to this - there are a TON of the megasix on KZbin, none of which count as bootlegging as the Queens give permission to the audience to film it, very similar to the final song of a concert. Easily one of my favourite shows to go and see, guaranteed a good time.

The Greenselves melody is purposely out of the key in "Ex-Wives" to create the unresolved quality, then in the title song "Six" at the end it's IN the key to represent the growth of the characters and also resolve it for the audience. :). The Greesleeves motif bookends the show, and when you see the show live (or listen to the B'way recording), the Greesleves motif is played on the harpsichord as the show begins. It's woven into the bass line in a lot of places too!

There were originally just SIX songs but they needed an introduction of all the queen's (ex wives) , they also needed a song bringing them all together and what they are "doing after their divorces, beheadings, deaths, or surviving. (Six) and a song to basically remind us of all the songs and the finale/ final number. (Megasix)
@acatnamedm45292 жыл бұрын
That interesting key change that you've mentioned is to incorporate Greensleeves (that Henry wrote for Anne who's sleeves are green - this is myth but that melody is so ingrained into the culture, that it's always played in movies to invoke that time period). In the first song, the melody is unresolved and sounds harsh. But by the end of the musical, there is resolution. See Howard Ho's masterful breakdown of this.

Around 80% of this song is in some way related to Greensleeves, which in in the Dorian mode. The "out-of-key" notes you commented on are the raised 6th from the Dorian mode. The chorus swaps from Aeolian ("remix", "prefix") to Dorian ("be six"). Greensleeves is most obviously quoted in the instrumental breaks, but also the synth hits in the first verse quote the first phrase of Greensleeves (opened up to make room for the vocal lines). (Later verses drop the hits but keep using the same chord loop.) The chorus has similar hits, diatonically transposed. The same synth from the dance break also quotes it as the singers hold "LIVE!"
