This show is less of a musical and its staged as a concert for a new girl group. They are trying to figure out who is gonna be the lead so they decide to have a whole “competition” on who had the worst time as a wife to Henry, and whoever had the worst time will be the lead. It’s a big commentary about how history has told these women’s stories in relation to Henry but never from their perspective and how media pits female pop stars against each other in competition and how much they have to endure in trying to make it in the industry

The little wordplay with "historemix" is so good, making that line my favourite part of the song. It's weird how the little things can make such a difference, and they really put in the work with the details in this musical

Just a slight correction: The one who died wasn’t the one who was with him for 24 years. The one who was with him for 24 years was the first one (Catherine of Aragon - first divorced). The one who died was Jane Seymour, the third one. I believe they were married for like 5 years max. I guess you already know, having seen the show, but still.

If I'm not mistaken, the Jane Seymour and Katherine Howard in the clip also sang on the cast recording too. And in my own opinion, they're the two saddest songs on the track. They're all insanely talented.

I would also look around at different people’s performances, because imo Aimie *sings* her part absolutely the best, but there’s a live recording of Sam Pauly’s performance and the characterization she adds to it made me actually cry real people tears. Fun facts from Wikipedia if you didn't know: Catherine of Aragon is modelled on a mixture of Lemonade-era Beyoncé, Jennifer Lopez, and Jennifer Hudson. Her solo "No Way" incorporates components of real-life Catherine's Blackfriars speech. Anne Boleyn features elements of Avril Lavigne, Kate Nash, Miley Cyrus, and Lily Allen. In full-fledged productions, the actor portraying Boleyn typically wears space buns, which signals character roots in Miley Cyrus. Boleyn also sports green to pay homage to "Greensleeves", referring to the myth that states that Henry VIII composed the song for Anne. Marlow and Moss weave in the "Greensleeves" musical motif throughout the score. Anne Boleyn sports a choker, representing her "beheaded" means of death. Jane Seymour emulates pop balladeers such as Adele, Sia, Rihanna, and Celine Dion. Seymour's costume design consists of a black and white corset design which alludes to half-timbered houses. Anna of Cleves radiates Nicki Minaj and Beyoncé's "Feeling Myself", Lorde's "Royals", and Iggy Azalea and Charli XCX's "Fancy". Katherine Howard's story is recontextualized through her depiction which parallels young, sexualized pop stars like Britney Spears and Ariana Grande. As in Anne Boleyn's costume design, Katherine's also features a choker, serving as a representation of her being beheaded. Catherine Parr's characterization draws inspiration from Alicia Keys and Emeli Sandé. She typically wears trousers, unlike the other queens who appear in dresses with tights.

I have this cast recording because it's the only one available and it's amazing!! But, I was lucky enough to see this show on Broadway in previews in February and I have to say, solely based on this live performance, the live vocals of the Broadway cast are much better. It's such a fun show!! Very different than any other musical I'd seen because of the concert feel.

The Broadway cast are great! But in defence of the West End cast, this performance happened in the evening after they'd already done two shows that day (they literally finished their second show, got ready in the theatre dressing rooms and drove straight to the Olivier Awards, they were late to the Red Carpet because of it), plus they were definitely nervous in this performance because the Oliviers are such a big deal. I think someone even said that Natalie's in-ear microphone wasn't working in this performance too. If you'd seen them in the West End in the theatre they're comfortable in, with their usual tech, when they haven't already belted through two full shows then their voices would definitely sound a lot better than in this performance (where they still sound great) and probably equal to the Broadway cast. Both casts are truly amazing and vocally talented (in fact, every six cast is!)
@lurker11074 жыл бұрын
@@Defaultname00067 I don't doubt it, which is why I specified my opinion was based on this performance alone. I'm an avid theater goer, on Broadway and Broadway tours in my city, so I'm very familiar with the Tony's (the equivalent of the Oliviers in the US). I've never seen a Tony performance that had the issue with the vocals this one did. Granted, during the Tony's the mayority of the main cast does not perform in their respective shows on that day, there are a lot of understudies and swings that get to perform instead. Maybe that's something that theaters on the West End should consider. 😊
@Defaultname000674 жыл бұрын
@@lurker1107 The problem with that is that Six simply doesn't have enough swings for the entire cast to have the show off. I don't know exactly how other shows did it for the Oliviers, but Six only had three alternates at the time, which means half the cast would still have to perform. Also I'm not very good at reading tone, but I feel like you were annoyed by my comment - I'm really sorry if my comment came across as condescending or rude in any way, it really wasn't my intention. I struggle to get my intent across over text, so if my comment was rude in any way then I really do apologise. I was honestly only trying to defend the West End cast, who I know are all phenomenal live vocalists because I've seen them all perform live at various times. I don't think I implied that you didn't know what the Oliviers are or that you were unfamiliar with theatre, but if I did then I'm sorry, that definitely wasn't what I intended when I wrote it. I just wanted to provide some context as to why they sounded a little off compared to how they normally do
