On the first example, it is a good way to support a wall, but is important to specify it all depends on the size and span of the floor joists under the wall, as well as the weight above the wall. All these factors are of the essence in avoiding a floor sag and eventually collapse.

1:28 notice that the center beam under the first-floor subfloor is a continuous beam, and not just piers. I have seen structures like this sitting on top of piers without a solid beam from one end to another. Piers like every 3 or 4 foot a part. Now they would have floor joust running the opposite direction, but still, this has nothing to do with a wall running crossways on the 2nd floor.

Would like to se a video on building permanent foundations for mobile homes. Do you want to take them off their metal chassis or leave them on the chassis? And what about those stilt platforms for manufactured homes when located by the beach? Or setting a manufactured home on a flat slab?

Hi I have a pier and beam home that’s currently a single story. I want to add second floor but because it’s pier and beam I’m wondering if it would be more costly. Some one said I have to change the type of pier and beam I have. What do you advise?

Hi, i am doing a 6 metre by 5 metre 2 story building/maimai. Can i get away with just wall joists around all 4 sides and then just 6 by 2s along the top? Or will i need something in the centre to support the structure or brace the wall? Cheers

Hi I just wanted to say that I am thankfull for what you did here and in your website. I will watch all the videos. Thank you so much. Not everyone wants to share information and ideas. I am a young architect and new at the timber frame construction. I like the idea of constructing wood houses. I am always searching for a new information, learning as much as I can. Thank you for this. I subscribed.

Very clear sir .. just framing my second floor 24x28 .. I ran a six inch footing in basement with 3 2x8 s to make a beam supported by 5 4/12x 6” posts .. I’m planning to do the same now on second floor following over the beam on the first floor wall. Beams are up to the level of the sill plate. , right now I’m putting the second floor beam on the wall plates right over the 41/2 x 6 beams . And my cross 2x10 joicess will be up 8 inches more . Is this ok .. I want to do this to get more heighth.

If the upper wall is not load bearing, can we skip the double joists and double studs? We're looking to split a large room on our second floor, the only 'load' would drywall and some attic insulation.

I want to build a two story cabin with half of the second floor without a floor. That seems simple enough. The problem I anticipate is the amount of water coming out of the hill. I'm thinking I may need to install a diagonal underground wall to shunt the flow. The cabin is just above a spring pond. Then for a foundation, maybe steel poles driven until they hit rock?

If there's a question in there, I might have missed it and feel free to re-ask it. I don't know if I would build something in the ground where there is going to be a steady supply of water.

I'm not an engineer and will not provide you with information. Keep in mind that most floors are designed to support 40 pounds per square foot and you might be able to use the existing floor as is with no modifications.

In my area, you can simply block between joists that sit on each side of a load bearing wall above. This is instead of doubling the joist. I don't know if this is permitted everywhere.
@constructionideas
@constructionideas 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, I'm not about to suggest that it can always be done, but it's something we've done in the past. Blocking works great for walls with plumbing pipes that would have a difficult time going through a double joist.

In the first example where the 2nd story wall is load bearing and is perpendicular to the floor joists, do you need to increase the size of the floor joists for the load somehow? Ex: The area is a sleeping area so you use the 30/10 span tables. Which span tables would you then use if you added the 2nd story wall? Thank you
@constructionideas
@constructionideas 7 жыл бұрын
Most the second story framing requires a 40 pound per square foot load. You might need to increase the floor joist size, but it would depend upon the amount of weight that the load bearing wall would be supporting. For example if you have a load bearing wall supporting ceiling joist and roof rafters, it might need to be 2 x 12, but if it's just ceiling joist, 2 x 10 might work.

Thanks for the info. In the second example, can I remove the first floor wall in the middle without adding any post? Do I need to add more joists or strengthen the outside walls to achieve that? Thanks.
@constructionideas

You would need to check with an engineer. If it's a load bearing wall, it could be replaced with a beam and posts. Don't forget to use the website for more helpful videos.www.homebuildingandrepairs.com/engineering/index.html

You cannot move load bearing walls or structural shear walls. These walls are usually supported by footings that are built into the concrete foundation.

brick homes built in the late 1940's, do they have solid foundations so to add a second floor?
@Scorpiomaj27889
@Scorpiomaj27889 8 жыл бұрын
Around here most brick houses are on cinder block or other types of block walls, actual basement floor could be soil, but blocks should go far down. Just my personal experience.

Most a single story homes, whether built out of wood or brick don't have sufficient foundations to support an additional story or level. You would need to contact an engineer for more information.

Does anyone knows the most important part in building homes? Read below. It is a long letter but will give you a good knowledge in building your home. People are getting sick nowadays for PRIMARY reason, they sinned against the laws and commandments of God. SECONDARY reason they live in homes with bedrooms that are not facing east where the sun rises. What is so important about having a constant sunlight in the bedroom? Sunlight is like a gasoline. Car will not start without gas. When the sunlight enters your body, it manufacturers natural calcium. Calcium helps strengthen the bones, teeth, muscle and calms the heart. Sunlight boosts immune systems, helps every vitamin function in the body properly, helps regulate hormones imbalance that causes mood swing, kills bacteria, helps lose weights, and anti inflammatory. Researchers said it can protect you from corona virus, and infection. Sunlight also keeps your room warm in cold season, and kills molds and bacteria. Malachi 4:2 But to you who fear My name The Sun of Righteousness shall arise with healing in His wings; And you shall go out and grow fat like stall-fed calves. Bedroom is the most important room in all the rooms in the house, because it is the place where you spend most of your time. For those who are planning to build homes, it is the best choice to place all bedrooms facing east as the morning sun has the most beneficial stage. People who already built houses, try to build balconies where it faces the morning sun. Psalm 127:1 Unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain who who build it; Unless the Lord guards the city, the watchman stays awake in vain. The Lord God gave us sunlight to the utmost. Due to disobedience towards His Law, people corrupted it with pollution. It thins the ozone layer in the atmospheres that protects us from sunburns and ultraviolet light. The result of it, people cannot get in the sun as what their body needs because of extreme heat coming from the sun. This knowledge comes from Mount Zion, Heavenly Jerusalem. Lord Jesus brought in this last day to save His people from destruction and death. It is the Kingdom of God which is to be built physically. It used to be a part of Israel. After the Jews rejected the Lord Jesus, the Lord God took it from them and gave to another nation in the east that will guide many people to serve God in Spirit and in truth. Psalm 48:2 Beautiful in elevation, the joy of the whole earth, is Mount Zion on the sides of the north, the city of the great King. Daniel 2:44 And in the days of these kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom which shall never be destroyed; and the kingdom shall not be left to other people; it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand forever. Matthew 21 "Therefore I say to you, the kingdom of God will be taken from you and given to a nation bearing the fruits of it. And whoever falls on this stone will be broken; but on whomever it falls, it will grind him to powder.” Now when the chief priests and Pharisees heard His parables, they perceived that He was speaking of them. Lord God of hosts, Holy Father Lord of hosts, Lord Jesus The Spirit and the bride Mount Zion, Heavenly Jerusalem Gabriel, an angel of the Lord
