Hey can you please give me some tips on what is on the psych exam and also polygraph. Thanks. If you can like give me some examples they use.
@footfeathers5 жыл бұрын
@@codlover93love24 Sure, it obviously varies but my psych tests were a total of about 600 questions pre-conditional offer and then another apx. 300 questions after conditional offer. They are a wide range of very mundane questions to fairly obscure ones. "Do you like the movie, Alice In Wonderland?" seems to be a popular one. Most of it seems to be looking for being overly aggressive or overly passive, as well as whether you are a dreamer or a practical person. At least that's the feeling I got out of doing them. I just answered all the questions quickly and honestly. Many (if not all) of the questions are repeated, sometimes several times, to make sure you're consistent. As for the polygraph (or CVSA), you just need to be completely honest, confident, and calm with your responses. There are no shortcuts to just being yourself and truthful.
@codlover93love245 жыл бұрын
Elevated Trail ok thanks do you remove any polygraph questions?
@footfeathers5 жыл бұрын
@@codlover93love24 Not sure what you mean by remove questions. I took the CVSA test and didn't have the option to "remove" questions. There are control questions, like, "My tie is blue and I want to to answer 'NO' when I ask you if my tie is blue." But otherwise the questions are just about your background you present in your original application.

Thank you for the feedback! Yep - I don't want to slam going to college, I do feel like it helped me prepare quite a bit for all of the things that come up while working this job; it's just the subject matter that was irrelevant. Take care!
@njmike97845 жыл бұрын
I’ve been on the job 19 years and this video is absolutely spot on! I only went to college for one semester and felt it wasn’t for me. That being said I’m glad I took English and a writing course which helped me immensely with report writing etc. So far I’ve had a great career. I spent my first 6 years in patrol and the last 13 in narcotics with a four year stint on SWAT. A huge problem we are seeing is the inability to pass the PT test! Get in shape and stay in shape! Don’t use the academy as your motivation to get in shape. Show up ready. When I went through my academy here in Ohio there was no PT standard; this has changed and is now part of the curriculum.

carl Hey man! Thanks for your service! My biggest regret was not serving in the military. It helps A LOT since the Police is technically a paramilitary organization. Your background sounds great! Our last three hires at my PD were all military guys and they are studs. They were Infantry, Airborne, and Combat Engineers all with combat deployments. Your background sounds perfect! I understand not wanting to come across as arrogant and I love that because it shows your humility👊. I would DEFINITELY put your experience in your resume and leave it open for questions from them. Your not bragging, your just listing your qualifications, plus you have education as well. As far as your injuries go, will they keep you from completing the PT test? If they would you might want to wait and heal up. Every department is different. Do you have open enrollment academies? Or do the send you upon appointment?

My husband is a retired detective/sergeant from Houston PD. We totally agree with you. Street smarts will prepare you for being a cop way better than college. Nothing wrong with college, but you're right. It's not enough to just go to school. The ability to communicate with all types of people is vitally important. Also, being able to run long distances will really help you on those foot pursuits and you WILL have many foot pursuits when you are on patrol. When the agency you're applying to interviews people in your past, they are just trying to verify what you told them, and also get a sense of your character. If everyone tells them basically the same good things about you, you're probably okay. If you love what you do, you'll never work a day in your life. Remember, there is NO SUCH THING AS A ROUTINE TRAFFIC STOP!!! Never forget that. Oh, and if you come upon one of those "sovereign citizen" idiots, tell them "We're not driving to jail, we're traveling to jail." LOL PS Polygraphs are not admissible in court for a reason. I think they are complete BS and shouldn't be used at all, but unfortunately, they still are. Good video, brother!!!

Hey Officer Four My name is Dee. I've had a passion for law enforcement but I'm currently a truck driver. Hoping to get in soon after this virus is under control. You may remember this but October 3rd, 2018 we had a mass shooting here in Florence South Carolina where 12 people where injured but 7 officers were imjured. My godmother was the one who was trying to do a warrant on the man who was accused of abusing the children along with his son. When she got out the car somehow he was already waiting on her to arrive. When she started to the door she was shot 2 times. Another officer came as she yelled for help. The officer Terrance Carraway was on the way home when he heard the call. He rushed her way but he was shot in the head and was dead on scene. Everyone else responded code to the scene. That was a horrible day. The suspect was my friend's father. Long story short 3 officers that same day called Hopkins and told him that officers were on the way. I respect all law enforcement agencies. Although some cops make other good cops look bad they are both human. They are here to serve and protect us NOT override there authority. I thank you for being a officer and serving and protecting us. I've always feared that I wont be accepted because of I had a troubled past from a child to a teen but nothing serious. Only thing that I'm nervous about is the polygraph but like my godmom told me "Why you scared for if they came all this way to send you to tester then tell the truth and your fine" so police academy here I come

I served 21 years as a military policeman before becoming a Sheriffs Deputy. It was a quick transition but I will say each job is unique and working the streets is fun, stressful and even sometimes grueling and although I’m retiring soon, I loved civilian law enforcement. Most agencies want applicants to have at least two years of college however, there are still some that will hire with a high school diploma at age 21. Also prior experience in law enforcement or the military is a big plus too. Good luck!
@Corvetjoe13 жыл бұрын
@Isaiah you will have to work harder to get a diploma. Although the military accepts GED's some law enforcement agencies may not. If you can't get your diploma, then look into getting your GED because it is an equivalent to the high school diploma and you may be able to join the military. This is a possible path to becoming a cop because lots of agencies value honorable military service and will hire veterans especially, former military police. Work hard and never give up because many law enforcement agencies don't have a hiring age limit. If you have a clean record and can pass their tests and physicals then you'll likely get hired. I was hired at age 44 after serving 21 years in the military and I personally know officers who were hired in their 60's

Now I'm applying everywhere and can fall back on those officers as sources of information or even place as references. Also I got to go to cool field trips (state prison, court, etc) and had alot of presenters that exposed us to the different facets of the C.J. system.

A part of me kind of wants to at least give it a shot. I'm not athletic so I'll need to work on that physical fitness part, but other than that, I think I would be a pretty desirable candidate. I don't really know what I want to do for a career, I currently have a full time job and it's not bad but I've only been working there for 11 months and I don't know if I want to still be working there in another year or two. Departments don't necessarily care what you major in, they just prefer any AA/BS. I have a BS in health sciences and get paid extra for having a BS, doesn't matter the major. My personal advice would be to get a degree in something you can pursue OUTSIDE of L.E just in case something goes south with L.E employment.
@Six60Four5 жыл бұрын
Look, any degree is better than no degree. So if you are far in to it - keep going. My main point is get a degree that you can use no matter what it is you choose to do in life because in law enforcement, the course of study (no matter how much it has to do with policing) will not adequately prepare you. The things that actually help are the studying habits, writing, grammar, communication skills, meeting different types of people etc.. and you can get that from any degree.

The video had good information but not all departments are able to be that thorough, especially the smaller departments. The applicant pool is often small and the resources are limited. Those are built-in problems and that is the beginning of many problems in a department. My department only accepted on average, 3 to 5 out of 10 applicants but we had a large applicant pool so we could be stringent with the hiring. Each department is different so choose carefully.

So I don’t need a degree for criminology?
@amb1583 жыл бұрын
I’ve just started my application process, so by no means am I an expert, but- I do know from talking to other cops in the past that CJ degrees are literally a dime a dozen, and basically useless. You learn everything you need to know in the academy. If you’re going to go to college and get a degree, many of them have told me you’re best bet is to get a degree in the field of your fallback career. If law enforcement doesn’t work out for whatever reason, what would you do instead? As far as I’ve ever seen the only reason you would need a CJ or criminology degree, is if you plan to go to federal law enforcement. I believe they all require some sort of a criminology type of degree whether it’s CJ, forensic psychology, forensic investigation, etc. but it won’t set you apart. I’ve heard it’s like going into your oral board and saying you want to be a cop to help people and serve your community as if they don’t hear that in every single interview. Make yourself stand out

I'm about to apply to my local agency and we do the Civil service test as well. The only part I'm worried about is the math, I'm not great at math. Any advice?

Chris Ratcliff congrats I want to be a police officer any advice for hiring process?
@chrisratcliff81555 жыл бұрын
Jacob Groves be honest throughout the whole process, even if you stole something when you were a kid, tell them. A speeding ticket, anything tell them! Stay in shape, they will run you to death, it doesn't hurt to start training early and lastly, get a civil service prep book, it helped me tremendously.

You need a 5 years to work on patrol. However, you need a bachelors degree to rank up

Don’t waste your time on a Criminal Justice degree. Get something else and it will benefit you more because all the law enforcement stuff will be learned on the job.
@boe17765 жыл бұрын
is your degree in criminal justice because I'm in the works of signing up for criminal justice course, I was hoping it give me an upper hand in becoming a detective and past it
@d.minaru77074 жыл бұрын
He mentioned criminology. I think CJ is still good Any degree would do I believe! As long as you also have a strong foundation/work ethic I'm a double major, was gonna triple major Criminal Justice Sociology Was gonna add psychology as a major or minor but probably would go back mid 30s
@d.minaru77074 жыл бұрын
Overall the majors and courses I chose specifically help me out in the long run. In college they usually have a roadmap of classes you can choose in order to graduate with the degree Like choose xyz I only pick courses that translate to the outside world. Aka- courses that actually benefit instead of just info. In the end, I'm gonna go for policing but later on in life become a counselor. People say I'm really good at connecting with many. Those who had the good life and shitty life.

I’m trying to become an officer sheriff I took my test I scored 14 but need a 36 to pass I’m so set on this becoming an officer is there a study guide to help me out
@MikeS3094 жыл бұрын
There are study guides available for some civil service exams..just google it for your state. If that fails, you could probably just search up SAT prep guides. Many police exams are similar to the SAT with basic math/reading comprehension/grammar etc.

Hey I have a question. I've wanted to be a cop since I was a little kid. I'm 31 now but! July of '17 I got a possession charge for cocaine. It was a bull shit charge it was an empty bag and a straw but that's neither here nor there her charged me with felony pos. I got the first offender prog. Completed it did what I had to do and the state found me innocent . No other trouble AT ALL other than that. it's still on my record though. can I still be a Leo? I guess from watching the video it varies wildly? So it depends on department?

I believe the “marijauna past “ history will disqualify a ton of possible good wuality of people to be officers. I beleive there are far more concerning

I applied for the LAPD but I admitted to smoking weed about 200 times before, now I don't think I'll ever get hired anywhere. Why does weed have to be taboo still, it should be treated like alcohol like in Canada where cops can use it off duty instead of drinking themselves to death
@nikolai36204 жыл бұрын
Well if it makes you feel any better, I've smoked weed about 10,000 times. And you can't smoke up when you're off duty in Canada. There is a 28 day wait between shifts which essentially makes it impossible.

Did they already tell you aren’t hired? Or you just haven’t been called back
