Hiruzen removed Kakashi from his Anbu duties when he was 22, and Kakashi was 26 at the start of part 1. He hadn't been an active shinobi for about 4 years due to him searching for his gennin team. If you read the manga, on the bridge fight with Zabuza he says " how long since it's been since I fought under conditions this adverse" implying that he's fought shinobi on Zabuza's level and come out on top. Kakashi later goes on to say " I too was a member of a ninja assin corps. I'll show you the kind of shinobi I *once was.* Him trusting Haku as a "tracker" then immediately realizing it was a hoax once he woke up, tells us how rusty he was. And let's not forget his rock climbing exercises during the Chunin exams. He literally has a monolog on how much easier it used to be. imo, late Anbu Kakashi was probably equal to his immortal duo self.

Soilid point Kakashi definitely suffers from what is typically called functional depresson. Meaning he can do his job, but once he's home his mind gets him and he is useless. Porn addiction and reading smut is often a very common escape. Writing smut on days with a bit of energy is not uncommon either (at least I hope. gotta ask my own therapist how common that is) and it fits with what we see of kakashi's life. if he'S already out and about due to obligation he is infront of the grave stone. if he has a complete day off, he's in bed reading porn. Kakshi is a textbook example of functional depression. YOu mentioned Sakumo's hair, watch Kakashi's when he is off duty. it is not styled and just falling down and I would bet that on those days he actually smelled. Not just sex, but sex is definitely a part and sometimes a toxic substitute. SO I think he at least read porn before the make-out series. But I do think he deliberately avoided this series due to a somewhat personal connection to Jiraya. Jiraya is the sensei of his sensei. And I am certain they have talked before or even worked together given they essentially were the leaf's top dogs. But going by the timing, he probably picked the novels up when Hiruzen assigned Naruto to him. Kakashi couldn't really keep all his past at arms length so hhe decided to give Jiraya's novels a shot. I am more than certain that kakashi had heard of Jiraya's skill as a novelist (and given how they typically talk about story beats, I would think they are well.writen and not just dirty) but for a mix of different reasons put off the make-out series until he got Naruto as a student.

My personal belief was that upon losing his friends and family before he really had a chance to actually build those meaningful connections Kakashi never really learned how to socialize properly or have friends and loved ones that you can connect with so he reads these novels as a way to fight the loneliness he feels kind of like how some people draw happiness from seeing their favorite characters in relationships because they themselves aren't in one. And then my best guess is that he ended up really liking the series and jiraiya's writing to the point where he kept reading even after he had somewhat filled those holes in his life. I imagine that Kakashi didn't start this addiction with jiraiya's books it was most likely that he started with a different and eventually came to really enjoy the series

I think that while all Ninja's seem to struggle with emotional vulnerability or vulnerability of any kind, it particularly true for Kakashi because of his past experiences of loss. The make out books don't just serve as a distraction or as escapism, but could potentially provide a 'safe' place for him to experience intimacy or closeness as the outcome is is predetermined already and has nothing to do with his actions / potential failure. The books are erotic so inherently depicts characters in vulnerable situations (emotionally and / or physically), but unlike his real life, the vulnerability in the book wouldn't force him to confront his trauma with loss and powerlessness ... It's fiction so everything will be alright, right? It's only fiction after all. We know that the contents of missions are classified, especially a mission so hard Sakumo would give up. The very fact that the information about his mission got leaked is sign that it was Hiruzen or Danzo who leaked it. So it was just a scheme to destroy Sakumo's reputation and kill any chance of becoming hokage, because he had the best reputation in the village, but isn't related to the lineage of hokages (a very big trend is that only descendents and disciples of previous kage become kage).

In his time, even the Legendary Sannin paled in comparison - Minato Namikaze In Sakumo's time, The Rasengan hadn't been developed, and by extension, Jiraya did not have it in his arsenal. His mastery over Sage Mode was likely to be even worse. Based on all the flashbacks, Orochimaru started experimenting with forbidden jutsu and deserted the village 10 years prior to the events of part 1, and Sakumo had been dead for a decade by then. Finally, based on chapter 169, it's made clear to us that Tsunade began developing the Byakugou seal long after she had left the Leaf. Sakumo was strong, but he's not some god. People took Minato's words literally without taking timeline into consideration.

Of course we can't really confirm either or, considering Sakumo could've simply been a stealth type shinobi who had a legendary Mission completion rate.

My headcanon is there are multiple layers of codes on those books. The Pain message demonstrates Jiraya is very so inclined to encrypt stuff in his works Ninja secrets, trade secrets, village gossip. Also, it may very well be that those are biographic, in a sense, so this is literary art/historic fiction, as it so often happens in our world.

I kinda assumed that Kakashi was lying when he said he can’t wait to see how the story ends and he has read the book multiple times before but does not to admit that. He was also being super vague and lying a lot when he first met team 7. With how much he loves the books it seemed like something that he first would have read when he is younger especially with how he talks about it with Jiraya making it seem like he has been a fan for a while.

It isn't just an escape. His depression would effect his brain chemistry, limiting the activity of dopamine, serotonin, endorphins, and oxytocin. The eroticism will release these neurotransmitters into the brain, the "happy" hormones, the same way sex and romantic love would. The addiction comes into play when the only, or nearly only, way that these hormones are active is through the eroticism/pron.

My theory is that because he was almost with the book when he did the bell test has to do with naruto teaching naruto, who's minato's, son who was also jiraiya's God son, was kakashi's way of getting to know the hero minato wanted his son to be aswell as read the novel his master looked up to.
