This is how I make my blocks and quilts all the time. I love it because nothing gets turned around or put in the wrong place. Works great for webbing an entire quilt block. First saw this done by Eleanor Burns and more recent, Bonnie Hunter. Glad to see you showing it to more people! Love your channel!

I learned last year to stitch line on the left side of the first column and that keeps the chain from twisting. Love your videos. Thanks for this one.

This gives me a better method of assembling an Irish Chain quilt with 1" blocks. I had been hand piecing the squares; but I worry that it isn't as strong as machine stitching. Yet I like to swirl the seams. Your method does everything I want! Thank you!

I have tried to piece blocks once or twice using this kind of method and easily got frustrated with things flopping around, so I figured it was just too fiddly for me. However, watching your walk-through has made me want to try it again. I think starting with a sixteen patch block is brilliant. I feel like I could keep track of the orientation enough to actually learn the skill and benefit from it. Thank you!

A 16 or 9 patch would be a great place to start--I think it would be overwhelming to do for the first time with an entire quilt. Once you get past those first few blocks where things twist around, it gets much easier! :)

I've been doing a series on some classic blocks--resizing them to make the most of modern precuts and giving some construction tips :). I think we are 4ish blocks in now? In a few more blocks, I'll also do a video on how to assemble different size blocks together into a sampler style top.

This is the best chain piecing tutorial I’ve seen. I’m new to quilting. I’ve wanted to try chain piecing but have been too intimidated by the process. Sure anyone can piece the first row. Chain piecing is awesome! Even if you don't go the full net piecing route, chain piecing columns together can save you a lot of time!

I do this too but I have the addition of the 3 pin method which is super helpful to stack your blocks in order before sewing.

Hi Megan, Just love all of your videos.Do you do quilt as you go quilts? If not why. I would like to see something on cutting yardage. I have bought lots of fabric in stores that cut off a bolt and it seems daunting to cut into it not sure where to start.

I've done a few quilt as you go quilts just personally but the only quilt as you go I've done for a video were some little coasters from scraps. I do have a few yardage projects in the works though! :)

Patricia Hildebrand 4x4=16, so you would cut (16) 4 1/2 inch pieces to yield a 16 inch finished block.

Strip piecing? It is certainly a great method to use and you could definitely use it for a block like this! I chose to start with the squares to demonstrate the net piecing but if I were making a bunch of blocks like this for a quilt, I would probably strip piece them to save time :)
