The hardest part with SSI is that you usually get $50 too much per month in order to get food stamps or other public assistance services. Unfortunately the government doesn’t do a sliding scale with assistance so if you earn $1 too much per month you won’t get help

Yeah sadly there's many factors on this or any other government assistance as well. Same with disability. My father had cancer at younger age and was unable to physically work from weakness, pain, stomach tube, and trach. Had us 3 children a wife and a starter house. We struggled heavily with getting the payments ect in my mom worked alot and my father still had to work nearly full time off the books because if not we wouldn't have been even able to eat Raman noodles nearly everyday as our lunches and dinners.... yet... my uncle who's wife shot him and he was physically fine after a few months and working well for many years lost his job so then decided to get on disability... he by this time was actually married to the girlfriend who shot him years ago and had 3 children as well with a similar starter home in similar types of payments yet they could afford brand new nice cars, fancy foods, big screen televisions, huge parties all the time and more of his and he only was working part-time still while she didn't work at all.... the only true difference that could have really made a difference was that we were all white while his wife was part white and otherside was part Mexican and part Philippineo so her and her children were atleast 1/4 a minority.... which in reality should not mean more assistance! It should be about actual disability not race. Heck even can k I nda understand some classism.... if a person used to get a hundred grand a year then they would get more than the Same person who could make 35 a year b4 the same disability makes since to certain extent atleast because they were likely to have already bought or in a least of place that cost more than the poorer people even though in reality they don't need more to survive they just have to downgrade there lifestyle as the broke family. I survived with no Christmas presents except notebooks and pencils donated to me by a church as a child and noodles for most of my meals at home. Had free school meals so was better meals at school than home on weekdays most of the time and I'd probably never ate breakfast if I didn't occasionally wake up wanting it so I would go to the school cafeteria for the reduced cost breakfast the schools offered. So don't need much to physically survive and cate physically for your family but mentally is a whole other story we struggled with this plus my father still being very sick entire time nearly shouldn't have been working... and everything and we knew expesally when being so reckless he was likely to get extremely worse any moment... every thing really did mentally mess with us but ok...

‼For those who are in a tight spot or need some extra food: ‼HERE ARE SOME TIPS‼ Be sure to check with your local grocery stores and fast food spots. Bring an unmarked bag with you just in case they can't give you the bag with their company logo on it. Ask them if they have any food that was 'damaged' or 'expired'(most 'expired' foods are taken off the shelf cause they expire at the END of THAT day) and if they are willing to get rid of them either for free or discounted price. Check resturants. Some places have free bread that you can just pick up as an order if you call ahead/walk in or they have some that are pretty cheap.(the max I've seen a resturant sell their bread for is $5 for a dozen.) Be sure to check the dumpsters if you really need food and if you know you're not gonna get caught(dumpster diving is illegal in some states and countries). Some stores usually throw out food around early morning(5a-9a) and late at night (10p-2a). Remember, some places will just give you these if you ask for them. Some gas stations also don't charge you for the cup if you get just ice or water or they ONLY charge for the cup(around $0.25). Canned foods. There's two dishes I made reguarly and had them be my dinners on different nights to help save. Casseroles. You can make them as big as you'd like with little expenses put in. For example, here in the US, Missouri, it's about $11.59 to get the ingredients to make Enchilada casserole as bare bones as possible while still being filling and appetizing. Another one is Green Bean Casserole. About $7.44 to get the ingredients, though this is also as bare without the soy sauce and milk. But other than that, casseroles are your best friend. Easy, cheap, and can last about a week in your fridge. Any 'poor man's' food is really good and filling and cheap. I recommend looking up more food like this to get a better of idea of what options are available. For anyone living in a car or might have to(from my experince of living in one): There's portable compact fridges that are fairly cheap. There's some that have batteries and some that use your car to power it. There's also tents that are pretty cheap and some cooking devices that can be powered by your car or on their own and coolers are really good since bags of ice are usually pretty cheap. Baby wipes. Do not under estimate baby wipes. These can be used to have towel baths if you’re ever in a hurry or don’t feel safe leaving your vehicle. National forests may seem scary, but they're good places to sleep in a tent if you need to or you can't sleep in your car due to lack of space. Park rangers are pretty nice most of the time. Learn if you can collapse the back seats of your car or take the seats out and store them in the trunk. It'll save on space and you can even have more space to sleep or make it into a cave. Do not get a gym membership for showers if you don't have to. There's devices that are called Road Showers. If you're working, which I assume you're looking for a job or have one, then definitely get one of these. If you dont want to use laundromats, then Scrubba is a good alternative. Elbow grease needed, but it's a product that'll save you money and wash your clothes rather well. Organizers are a thing. Get a few and divide your trunk into sections. There's also an organizer for the roof of your car. Both outside and inside. Collapsable awnings are also a thing. If you don't want a tent then you can always get one of these guys. You can make one on the fly with clothes, tarps, or blankets and some 2x4’s. DO NOT USE STORAGE SPACES! Even cheap ones. They will suck you dry. Instead, use a friend's home in they have the space. For instance, those seats that you might have to take out. Ask a friend if they can store them in a closet and forget about them. Most seats are easily stored somewhere. If you can’t find someone to store them then you can always use a tarp to wrap them tightly and store them on the top of your car securely. If that’s not an option then you can ask a stranger if they’d be willing to help you out. And of course, keep a self defense weapon near you. Living in a car isn't fun and you will likely meet some people you don't want to. Best weapons to have on hand would be a baseball bat, a knife, or a pew pew if you’re comfortable with it. Make sure if you’re ever pulled over, you let the officer know you have one and where it’s located.

It's impossible to starve in the west - just head to a major metropolitan area , and live off of thier scraps! Try going to the 3rd world if you want to experience ACTUAL poverty, otherwise, shut up and eat your leftover beef wellington and petis pois ! Sorry, rant over. Xxx Edit; best weapon? Knuckle duster. That's a really selfless gesture you did providing this info-bravo! There are always the good old soup kitchens as well. From personal experience I know sometimes you reap the benefits of free items if you do any volunteering ie a second hand store. Some landfills and construction sites hire on the spot workers to clean up periodically. And as for "dumpster diving"... a gentleman in my old neighbourhood approached me one day asking for bottles; we got chatting and I was blown away at the stuff he would recover from the bins! Landlords who evict tenants, literally throw all of their stuff away be it TVs, clothes, furniture... this guy actually gave me one of the watches he found from a choice of 5! I picked the Alfred Sung- no lies! Anyways, it's a shame how this world disposes of everything when there are so many without. God bless!

This is like my life but opposite (abusive step mother and passive father. My mother passed away). I was basically homeless at 18 sometimes staying in different family members houses or at friends until I had to move. Luckily in Australia I could get some financial benefits for being a full time student (I was trying to attend university at the same time which was a fail lol) but it was peanuts and would barely cover my rent. With my small allowance i could stay in a share home until I moved in with my boyfriend. Luckily minimum wage in Australia is high and now at 21 I just work a few casual shifts a week and it’s more than enough for rent, groceries and leisure. I’m now in the last year of my degree and Im going to study overseas for 6 months. It was really hard by myself without emotional or financial support from my parents (I’m also an only child) but I did this by myself, and even when I believed things could never get better they did!

Whatever self publishing service you use prints on demand. It’s more expensive per book, because it’s not a bulk order. Edit! Although the publisher absorbs the cost of printing, not the writer. They just won’t do another round, and she likely won’t hit the royalty mark.

In the Netherlands most big supermarkets like Albert Heijn, Coop, Lidl and Jan Linders, also provide damaged goods and close to expired goods at a discount price. With Lidl being the best, you pay a single price for a type of item, like 20 cents for pre-cut vegetables or 50 cents for meat or fish. The size does not matter. If you are on time you could get a kilo of chicken for 50 cents. The only catch is that you can buy a limited amount of discounted foods, so people living under the poverty line cannot live on these discounts.

I would either go hungry or give food off my plate to my kids if they were still hungry. There’s one night that there wasn’t enough and my husband and I argued over who would get food. He wanted me to have it but I wanted him too because he worked a physical job and needed it more. I finally just told him I wasn’t hungry and he relented. It was hard but I’m happy because my kids never went hungry and that was most important to me. unironically it doesn't hurt to ask if you can have the extra rolls from restaurants closing for the day, or excess popcorn from theaters. I didn't have to try and beat the crowd to line up for church lunch vouchers for a week because an AMC gave me a bag of popcorn as big as my body. Probably had a bit of malnutrition, but it was pretty sweet. The thing barely fit in my tent.

I completely agree with asking for extras or leftovers because a lot places just throw those things away every night. In my anthropology class in college, we had an 'urban foraging' assignment, where we had to find food without buying it or begging for it. Ngl I had a lot of fun doing it- one of my roommates came with me and we wadered around town looking for events serving free food- but it was also super eye-opening. It was a super cold and rainy day, and I didn't have a car, but once we managed to nab a free pizza outside of a Papa John's (they were gonna throw it away cuz it was a messed-up order or something), we went back to our warm apartment and ate it while watching a movie, all snuggled up and comfy. But the assignment was about getting into the mindset of someone who had to forage to survive, and I found myself wondering what I'd do if I didn't have my apartment to go back to. Like I said, it was a seriously cold and rainy day, and the only reason me and my roommate had the motivation to go outside at all was cuz we had thick coats on and a warm apartment to go home to. It actually ended up being a humbling experience, thinking about people who didn't have those luxories. Anyways, that's what I kept thinking about during that first bit of the video. Too bad this dude was just thinking of it as a quirky KZbin challenge instead of as a way to understand other people's circumstances.

I lived on the cheapest toast for a few months with the absolute cheapest crappiest stuff I could find to put on. It was something around 5 bucks a week and that was stretching my thin budget to the limit. I was also living on the streets for 2 weeks after a violent altercation with my step dad. I was still in high school and it was a bitter cold January. I literally searched trash bins and picked up discarded food from the streets. All I had were the cloths on my back and my school bag. The nearby homeless shelter did not allow me in because I was registered to my parents home. I had no idea there was a rule like that. I walked all night because I knew as soon as I would lay down somewhere I would risk freezing to death so I kept moving until the trams started to run again. Luckily high school students could get a year ticket to utilize the local public transports and my parents had bought me one so at least I could go to sleep then on the tram if only a few hours before school.

For a time, Waitrose really did give free coffee to Waitrose card holders, no strings attached! And a Waitrose card is just a loyalty card, not like a credit card with a monthly charge or anything. So it really was 100% free coffee! But because so many people took advantage of that and went into Waitrose branches specifically to get free coffee without actually buying anything, they've now made it so you can't get free coffee unless you actually buy something in store. But there was a time Alfie could probably have got away with getting a totally free coffee there without having to buy any 65p croissants alongside it, lol.

I grew up always middle or at times, upper middle class. That is not an excuse to be as unaware as the first guy, especially once you've been an adult for a hot minute. That is someone who has gone out of their way to socially isolate themselves and who has never learned to assume that huge chunks of their life are not the norm. It's already pretty annoying to encounter such people in the wild, but it reaches some interesting levels of jackassery if one of your job requirements is to be relatable. I had my own hell of a time playing "Food or rent? You can't have both" later in life. But y'know, I really didn't need that experience to know that it's kind of fucking obnoxious to consider filtered ice water your norm even if it's available to you all the time. Wait until someone tells him that being able to get drinkable water out of your faucet is already a pretty neat, modern luxury. I bet he'll be floored.

I just came across a issue like the first topic today. Not even an hour ago. I only had $5.99 on my card and I just wanted a drink and something to eat, because all I have at home is stale bread, some balony, a little bit of milk, and some cereal. I've been living off that for a few months now, or at least - in that same vein. I skipped on the gas station and went to the super market that was a little further, I walked. I did so because gas station prices are horid. And when I got to the market, the sheer depression that I felt when I checked the prices of the things I wanted was just too much. I ended up with graham crackers and a dr pepper - something I don't get often but I just...desperately wanted something /good/ to have for once. As I stood in line, I had a battle with myself, too. Because I could have slipped past and took what I got without paying. The usual receipt checkers werent there, no one would have known. And then I could have kept the money I was going to spend for later, or even gotten something from the gas station on the way home. I almost did, but I didn't. Living life like this isn't great, I've been struggling so hard with my mental health, I have no money to get my perscriptions refilled, all work oppertunities are outside my travel range, my unemployment check still hasn't come in, and all the bills are due. All I could think on the way home is that, if I got ran over or something, I would thank that person and hope I would die. Because maybe then things would be easier somehow. If I lived, it wouldn't have been, of course, but when you get as low as I am right now, any end to this awful routine sounds like a better one. I want to keep living, I do. I want to see everything through to the end. But I'm doing it all alone and every day is less shiny than the last. Edit: At least the crackers and soda is good, I guess. :)

As a person currently living in poverty, I really don't know how to feel about rich people trying out this challenge. On the one hand, I'm glad they are interested in seeing what it's like to live this way, but on the other, it's kind of crap, because ultimately, they still have money in their bank account if it gets really bad, they still have an aesthetically pleasing home that's comfortable and not leaking or something, they still have whatever plastic surgery they ever had to ease their insecurities, they still have all the education, therapy, healthcare they have ever needed. At the end if the day, it's not the same as having no idea what your future looks like and not being able to take care of yourself because you have to pay rent. It's not the same as having everything you ever wanted dangled in front of you as you run towards it, held back only by how little you are paid and how few options there are to change anything.

It's like the song "Common People" by Pulp, which is about this rich girl wanting to treat living like one of the "common people" like tourism basically. Maybe he's too young, but Alfie should know the song since the artist is from the UK and it was big.

KZbinrs are not even close to as famous as the average celebrity. When they go on shows like Ellen the most common response is "who the f is that?" And if you asked 30 people on the street if they know who MrBeast is 29 would say "what?". KZbinrs have hyperactive fanbases, but they in no way compete against even C list celebs when it comes to name recognition.

His take on the dollar a day is WRONG! So i had cancer and lost everything because i was soooo sick i couldnt work and ssi didnt care plus wanted more proof! So i had no money, car, anything. Just me,a $20 flip phone with 200 min on it,my purse with only $1 in it,and my chihuahua. I went to buy a plain hot dog and it rang up $1.69. The cashier at target felt bad fir me and let me have it for $1!! If it werent for her we wouldnt have had anything! That was our ONLY MEAL FOR 30DAYS UNTIL I GOT A JOB BY APPLYING AT JOB OFFICE THE STATE PROVIDES FOR UNEMPLOYED PPL TO USE! I GOT HIRED IN ANOTHER CITY WHERE I HAD SOMEONE ELSE OFFER TO DRIVE ME TO INTERVIEW AND FIRST WEEK! TALK ABOUT BLESSED!

My moms job is a seasonal job so when her job is out of season we end up have a lot of problems with food mainly... Luckily my school the teachers are extremely nice and help up out with food they gave up a bunch of food before my Christmas break its gonna last at least until February. And i thank my teachers a bunch for helping us. I'm definitely in a better situation than when i was younger. Sorry for the long comment.

I have autoimmune diseases and require immunosuppressant injections. I lost my job due to Covid and couldn’t afford my health insurance, and each dose of medication is roughly $20,000, so I wasn’t able to receive it.Because of that my immune system went haywire and I nearly died, and now I’m disabled at 28. The privilege some people have is incredible. I wonder how that silver spoon tastes Alfie.

18:35 He does know that those 4 croissants and the coffee likely have a full day's worth of calories? Or at least close to it. Meaning he could theoretically just go home, eat a croissant for breakfast, lunch, and dinner with one to spare for whenever he wants to eat it, and be set.

For a lot of us that grew up with just the off brand stuff we dont even realize we are struggling cause our parents provided the things needed to live.. now everyone thinks they have to have brand-name clothing, cell phones etc which none are needed and are just a waste of money.
