You brought up the fact that a winch changes power {mechanical advantage/levarage} based on how much line you have out...I never thought about it but you are absolutley right. I learned something today...... thanks.

Another impressive project. Love the upgrades. Another upgrade you might want to consider: The tube that you have in your hand at 2:10. Drill straight through that, in the middle of the length. Making 4 small holes in the middle. Now take the bolt that goes through it. Starting at the head, drill the center of that bolt. Maybe 1/3 to 1/2 the way down the length. Use a smaller bit, to maintain integrity of the bolt. Doesn't take much. Drill an 'exit' hole, at the end of where you stopped drilling. Now, drill a larger hole at the head, and tap that for a grease fitting. When you put it back together, just pump grease in, until you see it coming out both ends. Check it again, a couple times after the first few uses. Then keep it maintained from that point on. You can add a dab of grease to the screw, each time you do this.

bought one of these today. MUCH tighter than shown in this video. I was fully prepared to make the mods shown: shim the drum, move the worm, add washers, etc but see no need. Maybe tolerances vary or quality has improved but either way I'm very pleased. Gonna swap on a longer cable and build a shingle hoist for roofing.

Quality control is one of the reasons HF stuff is so cheap; there is none. So some are great, some not so much and some horrible.

You are correct about doubling the mechanical advantage by doubling the line, but your anchor point needs to be rated for the full weight or load, and you are adding additional stress to an already marginal design. Not saying it won't do it, just don't think that you are reducing the forces on the winch or anchor point

If you want to max out the range of that engine hoist, weld two pieces of flat bar to the end of the boom and bolt a pulley between them. Then mount your winch on the rear of the boom. That lets you reach deep into any engine bay with the boom fully extended to clear radiator braces etc.

I welded a socket to it. But I also made it as standard lug nut size so a 19mm or 3/4" lug nut wrench will work on it.

I had been thinking a lot about a small portable, yet powered winch, and then you posted this! I made myself one using your idea, but my gear mesh was a lot better than the one you have, so I didn't need to change it. Instead of making a bushing (shim?) for the drum I drilled it and the frame out to 1/2" and put a grade five bolt through it. I also made a hook on the top of my engine hoist and a pulley on the end of the boom so I can use it on there. Great idea, keep them coming!

I like the idea. I've been trying to figure out how to get a ford starter to be the motor on a very similar winch you have there. Here's what I did with my come-alongs.....I removed the steel cable and the pulleys. Then I wound new cable just like a winch. Now my come-alongs have 30 feet of use. You bet they pull full-size trucks onto my trailer. Plus they do double duty to strap down the vehicle to the trailer.

I got one of these to move my old truck. I made a bracket with chain to bolt to the hub bolt but after trying it the worm gear moved off it's pin and wouldn't work so I had to take it apart to put a washer in there to take the play up. I also welded nuts on the shaft too. The gear mesh wasn't bad on mine so I didn't change that but found the bolts holding it are m8 1.25 which is the same as handles for angle grinders so I replaced a bolt with a grinder handle which really helps to hold it while using it.

I like the worm drive. I used the gear drive type to build a shingle elevator. Same thing. Lots of slop and soft gears. Wouldn't stand up long, but I only needed it for my roof. Since then I've decided to go with a metal roof since I can buy it as I can afford it.

I just recently got a 2 ton version with a brake. I'm suspicious on the teeth only meshed in roughly half way. It definitely needs to be tighter tolerance. I'm glad saw your vid. Cheers from Australia 🙂👍👍👍. So cheap to buy it's definitely worth modifying! I made my 1200 lb winch on my hand trolley into drill power.
@BiddieTube
@BiddieTube 5 жыл бұрын
I have the USA winch, but got it cheaper than amazon, bought at McMaster Carr. I have used it for a Draw Bench power unit, had no issues. You know, it is 900 LBS with full drum and 2000 lbs with most the line out. I have only about 15 feet of line on mine, and so, I max it out. I have been using comealongs in the yard. I do have one of those outdoor drill winches, but the overlimit clutch slips all the time, kind of useless unless you only load it less than 500 lbs. I think I will get another McMaster winch and make a yard winch out of it. FYI, one does not need to mod the winch from McMaster, the tolerances are close enough already.

Thank you for yet another great video!!! I converted my battery powered drill to a cord that attaches to a car battery, about 20 years ago. (Wow. They have actually been around longer than that.) And converted a newer one, a few years ago. (Drill, cord, lawnmower battery, bits, and all, fit into a square cat litter bucket, so it's still portable.)(Loved it when I saw that you did the same, and made a video so now everyone can do it.) This is going to work great, in combination with that! (Plugged into the truck battery.) Thanks for making me take the time to tweak the winch as well. I probably wouldn't have thought of that. But I will, now. As for the dog at the end... Hey, I subscribed years ago, when you only had about 63 subscribers. (No thousands on that.) LOL So don't growl at me! ;)

@sixtyfiveford
@sixtyfiveford 8 жыл бұрын
A snatch block is a really neat thing. By taking the cable out of the winch and through the pulley of the snatch block, then back to the winch it doubles the pull capacity. It also halves the speed of the item being pulled/lifted but it is a worthwhile trade off. You can keep adding pulleys and running back and forth to reduce the strain on the winch.

Wow you could potentially use something like that on each corner of the car with tube steel and a Poli + your winch

I don't like the weld of the worm bracelet because I can loose the bolts and free wheel pulling the cable out, of course I had to add a cable tension flap and spring to prevent backlash.

Thanks. The link on Amazon that you give shows a video and they also sell it already made for use with a drill.

Great build Moe! And in a pinch, you could still use a lug wrench or ratchet in a pinch. Great way to also true up something that comes with a large margin of error out of the box. Cheers my Friend! Zip~

I will be building one this year. For when I go out and buy junk mowers with flat tires. That looks like it would pull a lawn mower or ATV on a Truck or a trailer with little to no problem.

Awesome. That's exactly what I built this for.

Cool video! I don't use come alongs or winches much, but don't think I've seen a worm gear winch like that. Have to try to find one. I can think of a few uses for one of these already. Thanks for the idea!

Ya these work good , Only thing it could really use is a guide ring on a rod about 8" down the cable like on the come a long so it can`t turn on you if pulling at an angle , Be handy alright .

I just used it tonight to pull a riding mower onto my trailer and it was trying to turn sideways a little. I like your idea and I'm going to weld a guide loop/fairlead a few inches out front. I may make it removable to keep this compact for storage.

The harbor freight version now has a hex on the shaft so would do this without modification. And it's only $35.
