if you check the parts manual for the engine itself (not the generator) you will find that this engine has 3 part numbers for the crankshaft. They just put the crankshaft in based on what it is used for. They are keyed shaft, taper shaft or gear shaft. They are a little pricey though, and you will then have to change your gaskets after opening the engine. Not sure if its worth it or not. I guess it depends on the shape the engine is in.

sixtyfiveford Gen guy here. What ya did works fine. Briggs makes a kit so I can do the home standby ones in the field. But on these little peashooters you have another option. Support that rotor slightly from underneath with a jack and a block of wood (plywood transmits the force nicely) Then take another plywood scrap and put it on top of the rotor. Whack that sucker with a good sized hand sledge hammer and as ya hit it, sorta put a spin or drag across on the hammer. This will work if you are careful and need to reuse it, but the strike will kill the magnetism for sure. No biggie to fix that though. but if it's going to scrap you don't need to be so careful, just support it good.

Most appreciative! I recently picked up a nearly new and pristine Westinghouse 9500 watt for $150. The gamble? According to the previous owner, the engine was locked up and it had sat for two years. The thing had no dust on it. I figured I'd take a flier of a chance at the price and pray for a hydrolock issue. Sadly, the cylinder is fine. It must be the rod/crank in a very strong embrace. I'm guessing it was a power out purchase and someone started it without adding oil. I've got everything off the chassis except the engine and gen head. I ordered a flywheel puller of eBay. For $20, it's not worth the effort to build my own in the shop. I still need to get a M12x1.75 bolt and come up with a shaft to push the rotor off. Once inside, I'll know for sure what the damage entails

@sixtyfiveford7 жыл бұрын

@Hellsong892 жыл бұрын
Those tips work just fine. No need to machine it any better, just make sure engine is hard mounted so it wont vibrate, remove bulk with poverty lathe/grinder, put long bolt on the side so you have hand rest and fine tune with file. Measure the diameter often and spray some water into axle every now and then to keep it cool so crank seal wont get damaged. That should be plenty good quality for go cart or other pulley driven system. For variator with larger diameter there might be some vibrations, but probably nothing major if its done accurately enough and with patience so it wont become uneven or oval. If you want bigger and wider axle, yes use the peace from the core, cutting extra off and pulling it into place with bolt, when its grinded to size make couple holes and with wet rag on the saft to keep it and seals cool, couple quick welds to secure it into place just to be sure. Alternatively new bolt should work too if welding is not a option.

You can buy a clutch that has a #41 sprocket, with the amount of teeth you want, or a 4L V-belt pulley, that fits the taper shaft. I "think" it is made by Max Torque. The around the $50 to $80 mark. Not bad, you can also just put the shaft bolt in, do it up and leave a gap of 1-2mm between the bolt head and the rotor bearing, then gave the bolt a couple of taps with a ballpein (Engineers) hammer. The taper fit generally just pops off

My Coleman Devilbiss powerback generator was different . The 4 long bolts only had nuts on one side and threads of not to other side. It may have messed up threads by using a tool to grip threads on the end closest to me that held nuts. And when I put a rod inside and screwed in a boot after creating threads the bolt broke so I had nothing to lose and tapped with a sledge and immediately fell off shaft. I had already tried a rubber mallet. Now I have to go from opposite end and drill an extractor also broke in bolt.

I may just turn down the shaft or I may machine an adapter which seems easier however I have to remove the govenor and I don't remember how much I need to dissemble but it depends on how much work to remove the crankshaft. Mine is a 3/4 tapered to 5/8 I can turn a 1 inch sleeve and press fit it on with a 1/4 inch of material removaed so after it is pressed in I can tig weld the original shaft onto the sleeve and the other half of the part would be solid with a keyway and a tapped hole. Well thats the theory it doesn't seem so hard.

@Y2daT4204 жыл бұрын
The cvt clutch from a golf cart or gator engine also uses a tapered shaft. Not sure about the taper lengths for a easy fit.. another consideration. Is tractor supply outlets have all kinds of shaft adapters , sprockets, pulleys. Ect. So even if the shaft needs to be larger than a go karts 3/4" u can Adapt to a farm sprocket. Then use a piece of 3'4" keyed shaft with a pair of bearings and mounts. To make a jack shaft with another sprocket to work with the motor on One end and kart clutch on the other.. ..
@sixtyfiveford4 жыл бұрын
Those tapered shafts on golf carts etc are a completely different taper. Generators have a unique taper style though you can buy adapters, They will run your $75-100+ which generally defeat the purpose of using a second hand engine.

If I had a lathe that would probably be my first option. However, spending a little more time to do the engine shaft gives you more versatility in applications and changing pulley sizes.
@zombieresponder7 жыл бұрын
As a machinist, no. I wouldn't waste my time cutting that pulley for myself. I've lost count of the number of straight shaft engines I've bought for just a couple bucks and put back into running condition in an hour or less...often without spending any more money. Lots of stupid people in the world throwing out perfectly good engine powered equipment because it won't start or doesn't run right....or it just isn't new and shiny anymore. I have no idea why people keep trying to reinvent the wheel. By the time you get through paying a machine shop, you could have bought an engine...or at least a new crankshaft. Doing it the halfassed way with a handheld grinder/file/whatever ends up with halfassed results, and you will never have a standard crankshaft. In addition, if the engine is used to direct drive a pump(hydraulic or pressure washer) you will very likely beat the keyway out of the shaft and pump bore due to a piss poor fit between the two. This will also ruin the pump.

where the windings burnt? if not ether the avr or brushes where bad and some times they need to be flashed by using a drill and make a crank handle and chuck it in and crank it and lot of time it will bring it back to life!
@sixtyfiveford7 жыл бұрын
Yes, the windings were char.

What about the electric motor? Can we use that in an EV Go Kart?

My Simplicity Baron is driven off the flywheel side, I picked up a 18 hp Robyn Subaru with tapered shaft for cheap and set it up to run off the flywheel. 14 years and still running strong! Why not make a plate to bolt on the flywheel side with the appropriate shaft welded to it.

Only more robust engines were designed to have a flywheel PTO. Most of these generators have aluminum/plastic cooling fan flywheels that'll never handle a flywheel PTO. My Simplicity also runs a flywheel PTO.

Could I use a tie rod fork to get it off
@sixtyfiveford Жыл бұрын
I find a pickle fork tends to do more damage than good but I have removed them before with one.

@sixtyfiveford Do you still have this engine? I have a similar Generac generator, which has a B&S Generac engine on it and I cannot for the life of me find the B&S engine numbers. I have a STICKER on the engine just like yours does, but that is NOT a B&S model number. And I cannot find the model type and code in the usual places. I'm hoping you see this and can tell me how you found the model and type to buy parts for it. Thanks in advance!

The engine in the video is a Generac / Honda clone. Generac has been doing this for decades now along with pretty much every other manufacturer.

I hate wasting stuff that still works. I’m not an environmentalist, but I don’t think we should be throwing away things that can still be used, so I love it when things can be repurposed and used as long as possible.

I've used a dead blow hammer and hit it side to side and it will come off after the center bolt is removed.

It gets it done on a lot but not when they're this tight. I would have bent the crankshaft or damaged the rear bearing with this one.

Would welding a pulley to the shaft work to?
@sixtyfiveford3 жыл бұрын
Yes.
@clydecoffey88157 жыл бұрын
bearing do go bad and there would be an oblong shaft a machine shop can make an adapter to fit and i liked your video just make the frame and idle pulley a little different
@pcguysoffgridcabin6 жыл бұрын
does any other company use this kind of engine?
@sixtyfiveford6 жыл бұрын
Virtually all generators of all brands use this style of taper shaft engine.

I have the 14 hp generac genset 7000watt , 15 years old and bullet proof. When it exploded off the shaft I thought for sure something was broke. LOL

I've been servicing this one for a neighbor for years. He's logged 5000-7000 hours on it since 1999+- so I think he got his money's worth. It's definitely been a great unit.

i wouldn't bother with a keyway. just grind a flat spot and use thread locker on any set screw.

Neat trick. I believe a ski do clutch will fit on that

If there are no threads on the outer end of the armature, pry outward on the inside portion of armature and hit the pin inward with a hammer. We could not find a video for if it doesn't have threads!
