HEVC is more efficient and also results in a higher relative bit rate (100 bit rate in HEVC is closer to 120-140 bit rate in h.264). The reason to not use it is if your computer and/or editor has difficulty with it, not because it uses a more "aggressive" compression than h.264. Theoretically, a video shot in 1080p HEVC will have more data (although compressed smaller) than the same 1080p shot in h.264.

A possible answer for question in min 3:50 is the Type of Image (static, moviment, a lot of things changing,..) , remember, compression use neighborhood pixels comparation or frames comapration and if the image chage a lot its means the compression will be poor but if the image doenst change the compression is verry good. For saple if your record a static scenery like a landscape the compression will be very high and the file smal for consecequence. But if you record the road and surronded landscape from a helmet in a motorcycle in moviment probably the compression will be poor and generate a big file.

This 256 GB max size restriction is the same on the Hero9, I noticed. I opted to buy the Hero8 Special Bundle recently because of its attractive price and the nice accessories included in the bundle. I find it a bit weird that the GoPro can't be upgraded to handle larger cards like 512 GB or even the 1 TB, but I guess then we're talking more professional, heavy use for longer periods of time without access to a PC/MAC. Might be a bit overkill for its size vesus price, the latter too. Yet, my Sony Xperia 5 II smartphone would happily accept the 1 TB card and this smartphone was released in September last year, the same month as the Hero9. I currently have a 128 GB Sandisk Extreme A2 card installed in my Hero8, but I'm going to buy a 256 GB Extreme Pro A2 card soon and keep the 128 GB card as a spare in the case (the Special Bundle already came with a 32 GB card, but that's never been used. Kept as a spare, though). With 3 charged batteries in total the camera should provide several hours of use. Now the only thing missing is me prioritizing correct and go seek out how to fill those hours 🙂.

I bought a 32GB Sandisk Extreme with UHS-3 speed (V30) is it capable of doing 4k30 on Akaso V50X, the quality is somewhat around GoPro 6 to GoPro 7. I tried to record 1080p60 and 2k60 on my 32GB UHS-1 and the quality was horrible. Edit: do you think a the Extreme U3 can handle that bitrate?
@ReeWrayOutdoors4 жыл бұрын
Should be fine for that. I do think some of the performance of high frame rate recording has a lot to do with how well the camera buffering is designed. If poorly/cheaply designed, can easily overwhelm the microSD's write speed. If that's the case, you might try the Extreme Pro. But also, I've seen some cases where low end cameras will sacrifice image quality at high frame rates, no matter what memory tech you use.

Thanks for that, it was very helpful. I have a 400gb sandisk extreme pro, and since the GP doesn`t state how much capacity the card has, it just shows how many hours it can record on the chosen setting, I was unsure if it was correctly working, since GP states it supports up to 256gb. It is also a bit confusing that higher resolutions and lower resolutions with same settings are similar in how much storage they use, at least not a large difference. For example, why should I make a 2.7k video if I can make a 4k video with the same hq-bitrate-frames-everything setting, the size of both seems to be the exact same.
@cenk824 жыл бұрын
IMO, beginners can start with 128GB sd card in capacity. And if they like gopro video capturing, but 1 or 2 more 128GB later.

sounds like it's dropping frames on you. I'd try always starting with a freshly formatted card (format it with the GoPro). If you continue to have issues, might try an Extreme Pro card and see if that additional write speed capability helps keeps the frames from dropping.

Hello! Thanks for the video, it was very very helpful. However,I would like to ask you something regarding the HEVC please. What do you mean saying that it is more ''aggressive'' ?
@ReeWrayOutdoors4 жыл бұрын
I'm not familiar with the underlying details of how HEVC does what it does, but what I can tell you is that HEVC encoded/compressed files do require more computing power to work with. Windows Media Player won't even play them without purchasing (for cheap) an additional codec add-on for them. And in editing, the HEVC clips seems to consume more computing resources when you're working with them (like scrubbing through previews for example, or previewing applied effects). So it's a trade-off between file-size and computing-power. As long as you've got a decent editing machine, you'll probably be fine.
@evtheo23084 жыл бұрын
@@ReeWrayOutdoors I got it! Thank you. Does it mean that without a strong PC I cannot edit an HEVC clip? And then, does it mean that I cannot use 4k/60, 2.7k 120 and 1080/240 for recording with my new go pro 8 ?
@ReeWrayOutdoors4 жыл бұрын
@@evtheo2308 Well, the Hero8 doesn't really give you the option NOT to use HEVC on those intensive video modes, unfortunately. (though it DOES allow you to use HEVC even on the lower-res modes if you want to, to reduce file size further). But whether or not that will be a problem for you, you'll probably just have to try it and see. I think typically, you would just see some laggy video preview performance (ie dropped frames) - so not necessary a deal-breaker...just maybe not ideal.
@ReeWrayOutdoors4 жыл бұрын
For reference, I'm using an i7-8700K 3.7GHz processor and an nVidia GTX-1070Ti video card (all roughly 2 years old at this point, I think). And my PC handles HEVC like a champ. :) I think as long as you have an i7 CPU, you'll probably be fine....i5 might work, but probably not ideal.

I extrapolated the 1 hour size based on the actual 1 min size test. It's possible there is some file overhead that doesn't need to be multiplied. In any case, I wanted to err on the side of being conservative in my numbers so as not to over estimate

@ReeWrayOutdoors2 жыл бұрын
Does the SD card work in a PC? If so, have you also tried formatting the card while it is in the GoPro? And maybe formatting first on the PC, and then formatting from the GoPro? Finally, make sure you have the latest firmware on the Hero8. Not sure if any of that will help, but worth trying. If none of that resolves the issue, perhaps there's a problem with the SD Card, since according to GoPro, that particular card should be fully compatible with the Hero8.

Hi! Do I need to reformat my sd card first using gopro hero 8 before i start taking videos?
@ReeWrayOutdoors4 жыл бұрын
It certainly doesn't hurt. I typically reformat from the Hero8 each time I go out to use it.

hey not sure if those links are right anymore, those cards have a 3 in the 'U'..?
@ReeWrayOutdoors4 жыл бұрын
Yeah they appear to be correct. If you check out SanDisk's website, you'll see that the U3 is what they use on their fastest microSD cards. I've seen some references incorrectly claiming that the U3 designation equates to 30MB/s max write speeds. Not true. However, they do now have UHS-II U3 cards with even faster potential max write speeds. I'll update the links if I can confirm that GoPro supports these as well. Thanks for bringing that to my attention!

Interestingly, GoPro doesn't list any UHS-II SanDisk cards on their compatibility list (only Lexar). I suspect this is not an indication that they are incompatible, but more likely just didn't make it into the test. But here's the link to that resource if you're interested: community.gopro.com/t5/en/SD-Cards-that-Work-with-GoPro-Cameras/ta-p/394308#HERO8_MAX

Have you ever had problem with your gopro hero 8 were you're missing clips after you record I ride motorcycle so I always have a camera on but I been seeing I have missing footage I use Samsung evo Plus 256 microsdxc UHS-I . I run the gopro 4k 30fps

I've not seen that specific issue. Occasionally, after pressing the shutter button to active Quick Capture recording, I have gotten an "SD Card Error", after which the Hero8 shuts down. A re-press brings it back and it then functions properly. I think this was related to a specific card though as I've swapped it with another identical card and I don't think I've seen it happen since. Since you've said you leave it on all the time, I wonder if you're seeing an overheating issue? I'd try it with another card to see if you can narrow it down.

Didnt know the file sizes got that huge . Other guestion is that one huge file or couple files together
@ReeWrayOutdoors4 жыл бұрын
yeah I didn't mean to imply (in the 1 hour column) that individual file sizes were that big, but rather the approximate total storage needed for 1 hour. The Hero8 does something called 'chaptering' in extended video sessions so you'll only ever see individual file sizes up to a max of about 4GB.

@@ReeWrayOutdoors lot of people say gopro make 4gb files . you talk for 20 mins its going to be couple files

Do you know if 256GB sandisc will work well? I heard the limit is 256 but people say to use 128 max... what do you think? Going to do good research before buying.
@ReeWrayOutdoors5 жыл бұрын
Gopro says 256...at least that the largest capacity shown on their matrix: gopro.com/help/articles/block/microSD-Card-Considerations

Hi can you give me an advise? I Have Go Pro Hero 5, I also have 1 Authentic Go Pro Battery and 2 Replacement Battery. My SD Card is SanDiskExtreme Pro 128GB XC I V30 U3 A2. I was only able to record 3 to 4 Videos regardless of length but after that when I try to Record new video it doesn't save anymore. I have to Format the SD Card again in my PC for me to record new Video. I read some article that it is because of the battery but I tried it in all of my battery when I try to record from the authentic Battery it is working after 3 to 4 videos when I record it records but after stop recording when I try to preview the file it says unable to preview then I try to check the file created in HxD and it is all Zero's meaning the file is beyond recoverable. So I decided to Purchase Different SD Cards SanDisk Ultra Extreme and Extreme Pro. But still gets the same issue. I don't have any Idea on how to work on it.
@ReeWrayOutdoors3 жыл бұрын
I don't have any experience with the Hero 5, but I suspect you're dealing with a camera issue and not an SD card issue. I'd recommend seeing if you can do a Factory reset on it and then reload firmware and see if that resolves the issue. One other thought is that since the Hero 5 is a bit older, have you tried an older non-Extreme SD Card? It's possible that the firmware on the H5 is having trouble with the higher-end SD card - (and if so, a firmware update might also address that). It's a tricky problem. Good luck!
@vinceky023 жыл бұрын
@@ReeWrayOutdoors to be honest I first tried a non-extreme SD Card first but the issue keeps happening I started from Sandisk Ultra Black Class 10 64GB, Then change to Sandisk Ultra White/Gray 128 GB Class 10 XC 1, I even use a Sandisk Industrial SD Card from Digital Ally DashCam to test it, Then now the Sandisk Extreme Pro but still got the same error. I already tried the Factory Reset but still having the same error most of the videos are corrupted after 2-3 recordings. Do you have any link for reliable firmware source? Thank you so much for the reply
