Hey Steve, they both look great! I like your simple method to reverse mount the apple, I'll definitely be using that in the future. Have a good one, Kevin
@SJWoodworks10 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Kevin. One thing I should have done when reversing the apple - just a small bit of padding between the finished side of the apple any my wood waste block, even just a scrap of shop towel or something, would protect the finish I had already applied to that side.

Hello Steve, Great turning. I have been using carbide cutters for the past year or so and am a big fan of them so much so that I recently bought the Robert Sorby Turn Master tool which consists of the square, diamond and round cutters. Quite coincidentally I've also been turning Pau Amerello (yellow heart) recently and it's a joy to work with and is a really beautiful wood with a silk, cloth-like finish. Happy turning, Alan.

Yeah, I looked at the turnmaster tool, but I've found I always get tired of having to switch cutters, or handles, or whatever. I'm currently in the process of making handles for all my tools because I don't want to keep switching them all the time! Thanks for the comment.

SJWoodworks Hello Steve, I know what you mean about changing cutters as that's how I felt too. I had the option of buying a single shaft with the three cutters but I opted to take the three shafts each lodged in a wooden handle. I also had the option of taking the aluminium handle but I settled on the good old fashioned ash.x three. Regards, Alan.

Lovely project. That wood looks a lot like the jarrah that is local here in Western Australia. People use it for firewood and I'm always grabbing it and saving the nice its for the lathe pile.(pile is getting out of control :) )

Agree fully - Red Delicious is not the best choice of apple. As you pointed out, your drill bit wobbled quite a lot as you started the hole. There are two things that I have found help prevent that problem. The first is to have a dimple in the piece to center the bit - the dimple can be made using the tip of a skew, or it can be made with a center bit. The wobble comes about because a thin drill bit is flexible, and longer bits are more flexible than shorter bits. So I initially push the bit as far as it will go into the mouth of the jacobs chuck to minimize the length of exposed bit. After drilling the hole to that depth, I remount the bit to expose the full flute and finish drilling the hole. Great video. Apples are a nice way to show off varieties of wood.

Two good drilling tips there, Louie, thanks for that. I actually have a set of center bits, and I use them every time I'm drilling a pen, or tool handle, etc, and for exactly this reason. I'm not sure why I didn't think to use one this time! Thanks for your comment.
