UK lawmakers apparently just LOVE to ban objects instead of making an honest effort to address the underlying causes of violent crime. Recently (as of April/May 2023) there has been talk about wanting to prohibit machetes in the UK, which is just ridiculous in my opinion.
What's the result of all the restrictive knife laws? More kitchen knives used in criminal attacks... a LOT more. Including taking it a step further... in Durham police seized what I'd describe as homemade war picks. Kitchen knives taped to the end of long handles. So I figured it might be educational (and entertaining) to see just how effective this kind of "workaround" might be.
I also tested what a "harmless" tool does (screwdriver).

The problem with banning knives in the UK is that the people who are currently using them for violent crime will just move to the next weapon down. Sooner or later they'll have banned everything except for sticks and rocks, and the gangs will still be attacking eachother with those. They need to address the route causes that lead people to a life of crime rather than banning the tools used for crime in the first place.

You might also consider a very bright flash light with a strobe effect, though not for self-defense because that might hurt somebody : ) On my recent trip to Britain I was politely asked to leave my firearms, pocket knives, pepper spray, and Cold Steel walking club at home, so I bought an oak cane and a very bright flashlight with a strobe (a ThruNite TS1). I have a bum hip and bad night vision, so the cane and flashlight were useful regardless of mugging : ) I thought the flahlight would sit on a shelf when I got back, but it turns out I love the stupid little thing. I use it all the time now. I like the cane better than my walking club too. Super handy, but not as sturdy. Anyway, food for thought. Your wife might consider developing a limp and bad night vision as well. I noticed dozens of women, especially young women in London and Cardiff, who also needed a walking aid, so your wife shouldn't stand out. It's weird. I virtually never see men or women under 70 with a walking aid in the U.S. I wonder why I saw five or six women in their twenties with a cane every day in London...

Here in the UK, a sharpened pencil is regarded as an offensive weapon. This is not a joke. If the police search you and you have a pencil on you 'without a justifiable reason' you will be charged with carrying an offensive weapon. Which is why real unarmed self defence, especially against a knife is so popular in the UK. Because of course as you say, the criminals don't care what the law says.

When I lived in Central Europe I, as probably half the guys, carried some sort of foldable knife. I personally mostly peeled fruits with it. Sure, some crime existed, but stabbings etc. were relatively rare and "big news". Now, in the UK, I cannot have anything more than non-locking keychain thingy that's only good for opening packages. There have been dozens of bladed weapon murders in the area in the past decades.

Due to massive increases in productivity brought in by computers, robotics and the internet, there are more workers than there is demand in private businesses. That, plus a weak social net and demand that you take literally any job, no matter how shitty, if you are unemployed, gives businesses a lot of leeway to exploit the shit out of workers, who now have much weaker bargaining power. It is true though, that if businesses still get pushback from the workforce, they just get people into the country or outsource their work, which gives them even more of an edge.

Watching this I remember seeing a similar weapon at the museum at the battle site of the Little Big Horn or Custer's Last Stand. At the start of the video, even at the thumbnail, I was thinking of a 12" ardox spike (spiral wound nail) fitted through a handle literally like a warpick. No knife or tool required, literally an already sharp piece of metal stuck through a random length of wood. It would perform similar to the screwdriver except be even more economical. Also, the knife with the tape wrap fastening it to the stick is similar to that medieval implement that has a brass fist on a stick holding a separately forged knife or spike. The UK policies regarding self-defence/weapons in general need a major reform. When criminals can go out with the expectation that a potential victim will have nothing to defend themselves with they are far more likely to attack someone. The current laws only affect people who wish to carry tools for self defence at all times; criminals only carry weapons on the rare occasions when they go out with the intention of attacking someone, them getting searched with a weapon on them is close to zero. From what I've been told, Poland is a pretty good example of how to do it right. As another comment pointed out, "laws like this just makes criminals out of people who aren't criminals."

Well its worth pointing out that there are only around 500 murders a year in the england and wales area, which is a population of about 60 million. Just looking around my garage for “non-weapon” tools and things: saw blades, woodworking chisels, screwdrivers, fire axe handle, gardening spade, weeding claw, various hatchets and tomahawks, plastic rebar of various lengths, wooden dowels, various lengths (1-4ft) of high voltage electric cable (rubber coated copper wire about 3/4 of an inch thick, large ball bearings, hundreds of feet of paracord , iron spikes about 6 inches long, assorted scrap wood and metal, hammers, nails, drill bits of various lengths, assorted types of tape and other adhesives, automotive wrenches and tools…. Most of these you don’t even need to “get creative” with, you can just pick up and swing or stab an be devastating. IMO what separates a tool from a weapon, apart from the obvious, is mainly the weight and balance. Tools tend to be heavy and clumsy compared to purpose built weapons but with some working knowledge of how to use weapons and a bit of practice a “tool” used as a “weapon “ will get the job done… generally speaking the outcome will just tend to be a bit… messier.

The thing about laws on weapons and what should be banned or not, is that people will never stop finding ways around it in the name of being able to protect themselves or worse. There's really not much point. If people feel the need to carry a weapon for any reason, the law merely acts as a guideline on what not to carry with you if you don't want to be prosecuted when using whatever dangerous item you carry. The only thing these laws are really doing is shifting the defence/offence methods possible with whatever tools are available by law. The true danger isn't the weapons, it's the people using them.

I hope you learned a valuable lesson today. Electrical tape in many applications is way better than duct tape. Main reason is as you wrap, you can stretch it, creating a tighter hold. Apart from doing electrical work with it, it does come in handy for a lot of things and definitely will work as a temporary bandaid.

Agreed. The one thing it doesn't at all do that gaffa's tape does is stick really really aggressively, and lacking the cloth reinforcement it isn't as good in many wear and strength applications either. But the more elastic nature of it for this job is actually going to help a great deal here - no major force concentration points so the blow is taken by all of the tape fairly evenly, where the cloth reinforced tapes its almost certain to be all the load on the tightest loops of that reinforcement until they break - which is why tough as it is you can tear duct tape.

The knife at 2:25 is arguably a Sheepsfoot design. Santoku knives and the like have developed thr design as well, possibly as an example of parallel evolution. The sheepsfoot was common among sailing vessels because the roll and sway of the waves, let alone bring bumped by someone trying to get by you, means whatever you were carving would be ignored since your regular knife just pierced your hand. No point on the sheepsfoot to stab yourself with. That being said, the target that's being stabbed doesn't appear to be a very good parallel for human tissue since it was stabbed by the curved back of the sheepsfoot blade as opposed to the front where the knife forms a small but sharp angle. Maybe he should head down to the butcher's shop and get a rack of spare ribs or baby back ribs with the fat and skin still attached. That would simulate human tissue well, plus you'd have dinner afterward. Aside from that, it's not illegal to own an ice climbing axe, a regular axe/hatchet, or a machete in the UK. So improvised weapons are pretty much pointless. Heck, give me a copper nail and a piece of flint, jasper, obsidian, chert, or old-fashioned non-safety glass, and I can knap you a knife blade, spear point, arrow head, or simple shank. If it's glass, just wrap the grip in tape, use it, strip the tape with your prints off of it as you leave, hurl the glad against the nearest stone surface, dispose of the tape elsewhere, and you're done in time to meet some friends and have a round or two.

Material condition do not cause crime, and it's absurd to think that the answer is of the "root causes" variety anyway. The solution is, indeed, to crack down on criminals and put them away. You can also try to figure out deeper, longer-term causes--but that is no substitute for dealing directly with the immediate threat. Sharpened screwdrivers were used as weapons for a huge series of gang kiillings in LA in the late 1900s. :) I find, if you have old screwdrivers with a long shaft and either a grinding wheel or grinding belt, they make for great wood chisels. I prefer square-sided chisels for clean lines anyway, and they work particularly well as paring chisels. The longer, the better.

Yeah, coming from the UK, and having spent a couple of years at Her Majesty's pleasure, I can wholeheartedly confirm, the absolute ingenuity of certain lawless groups knows no bounds! I witnessed a table leg, snapped off, wielded like a baseball bat, by assailant number one. Number 2 utilised the splintered remnant of the leg as a stabbing implement. Crook number 3, the first to enter the cell, treated the victim to a good old jugging. Jugging is taking a waste paper bin, adding a pound (lb) bag or two of sugar, then mixing this with boiling water. The sugar dissolves into the scolding water, making a sticky, boiling liquid. The jug is then thrown into the victim's face. The sugar in the water then sticks to the flesh. That is a scream I'll never forget. So, victim, screaming as his flesh melts, faces assailants one and two, who hit and stab at him with their improvised weapons. Wondering what the victim did to deserve this? So, he came to HMP Wellingborough, B Wing, and being quite a large lad, got into selling prison deals of heroin. This inflated his ego, and he swanned around the wing, thinking he was a king. Except, someone from his area then came to the prison and knew what he was in for. He had mugged a lady in her 70s for her handbag, just she didn't fancy losing her pension money, so wouldn't let go of her bag. He punched her in the face, breaking her orbital bone, then, when she fell down, still clutching her bag, her kicked her several times, breaking her arm and a few ribs. Yep, this did not go down well on the wing. HMP Wellingborough is an old prison, and B Wing is just one long corridor. There is a ground floor, and a first floor. Prison staff are on the ground floor, the first floor is where the cells are. Old matey, after perhaps 45 seconds of beating, then burst from his cell, needing to make it to the ground floor, the officers and, safety. Except that meant running down a 100-metre-long corridor, past the cells of many other angry inmates who ALL knew exactly what was occurring, and why. He had punches and kicks raining down from EVERY angle! Blood was everywhere. And oh how he screamed. His victim, the little old lady, probably didn't scream as loud as him, nor do I imagine she felt the pain he felt, or carry the scars from the burning, hitting and stabbing. He most assuredly “got his”! No charges were ever brought against anyone involved, no witnesses, you see. And we never heard what became of him. Got soooooo many of these stories! Moral of the tale, if you can't do the time, DON'T do the crime!

To be fair anything intended as a weapon is illegal in the UK. So if your walking in inner city london at night with a cricket bag you will probably be stopped and searched. If they find a cricket bat (let alone a knife) and you can't prove your coming or going from a cricket match you will be arrested, and possibly go to prison. I used to live in Hackney and the gangs tried this but the police got wise very quickly. Now they just hide weapons in bushes to pick up when needed.

Electrical tape is surprisingly strong; especially when wrapped tightly around itself like you did. It's meant to withstand a lot of force in tension so that an electrician can pull the wire through conduit. If you use any other kind of tape it just won't be strong enough. Edit: typo

Guys in the military use electrical tape to secure loose straps on their equipment for this exact reason. You tape down your straps, put another kind of tape that doesn't shine over it, and now you can run through thick bushes and stuff without worrying about all your gear coming undone by the foliage grabbing at you. If anything, using electrical tape for the application depicted in the video is actually ideal if you're a desperate junkie with nothing better on hand.

In general, banning weapon was rarely a good idea. People can always makeshift a weapon, or crafts it, steal, or improvise it. For example, the shank knives in the prison, it can be made from almost anything such as half scissor, toothbrush handle, glass shard, metal sheet, etc. In the other hand, historically, weapon such as kusari-gama, flail (with long staff), fork, warpick, quarterstaff, scythe were basically improvised farming/mining tools.

Banning any weapon is only pointless if your intention is to stop crime at an individual level. That is not government's intention, generally speaking. Bans won't stop mugging...but that isn't what they are trying to do. It's just the excuse they use to get it done. When your intention is to control a population, like a prison, school, stadium crowd, or nation, banning weapons is a numbers game. On a large scale it makes perfect sense. If you can get functional weapons out of tha hands of, say, 90% (this would be the law abiding 90% generally) that makes it, say, 90% safer for armed security to confront an angry mob at the castle gates. If you view the issue from the perspective of a government attempting to control an angry mob made up of random, recently law abiding citizens then it is hard to argue against the effectiveness of weapons bans.

In most Asian countries, and commonwealth countries, and even Germany, basically banning weapons for decades (on different levels of strictness). I also understand that some people unfit to wield/bear any weapons because of their mentality. But a strict weapons ban, often times only resulted in more difficulty to accomplish day to day tasks (e.g. tools for camping, farming, self defense, handyman etc.) Like I mentioned before, it doesn't matter when government banned a machete for example, one with evil mind can still easily obtain/steal a crowbar from home depot to mug/kll someone. Joerg Sprave on his channel also elaborate the silly (knives) law in Germany, please look it up. And there's other aspect such as unarmed security forces (such as in Indonesia), they're rarely have knives and handcuffs, sometimes they only have clubs/tonfa, sometimes it's just smiles on their faces. It's not surprising that they can't effectively stop terrorist (bomb) attack, on motorcycle for example. Tightening of security only happens after the fact, and eventually laxing over time. And then a new cycle happens again. What make it worse, on recent years the security force's uniform had been made similar to police forces, it's simply made them as maybe deterrent for petty criminals; but the cannon fodders to the big time/organized criminals.

That is largely why governments enact them...and they lie about why they did it because it never sounds good to admit you don't want the people you govern to be able to fight back. When politicians want to prevent stabbings, they enact harsher penalties for stabbings and work harder to enforce those laws. When governments want to disarm law abiding citizens, they pass laws that prevent people from legally owning weapons (i.e. a weapons ban) Right now in the U.S. some politicians are letting violent criminals have shootouts in public with illegal weapons. They let them burn down buildings. No jail time. They just let them go. In fact, several U.S. cities just paid out tens of millions of dollars in apology money to groups that burned buildings down in 2020. That actually happened. Meanwhile, armed federal agents go door to door collecting legal weapons from people who have committed no crime. Right now, politicians in the U.S. are fighting hard to ban "assault rifles" as they did in the 90's, but all rifles combined kill fewer people every year than bare hands and feet... The same is true of blunt objects, and knives, and swimming pools...the list goes on. So why ban a weapon when more people are killed with bare hands?The weapon clearly isn't a major threat to the populace if hands and feet kill more people. It's because the weapon is a threat to governments : ) Once you accept that politicians lie to get secret things done, the whole mess makes a lot more sense : )

It's so silly that the UK lawmakers focus on specific weapons. When I got stabbed it was with a sharp fishing float.
