What do you think, are hip pads for skateboarding?!

I just got back on a board again at 49. I never really quit skating, but I sure wasn’t going for in like a decade. Kids, bills, no insurance, blah blah. The last few years I’ve been super envious watching my old friends ripping it up on the Instagram. Plus my youngest kid has taken to it. So I went all in. Made a whole mini skatepark on a slab off cement on the back of my property. Skating better than when I was 20. Anyways, around a month ago, I was messing around with the kids. We were actually done skating. They had just learned rock to fakie, and we were stoked. I was like “Nobody has got hurt yet today. Let’s take a break.” But before we did, I did a little rock n’ roll on a little wedge ramp. I was hyped up and not thinking. The ramp had gotten moved and it wasn’t secured like it was supposed to be. I didn’t have the cement blocks holding it in place. When I turned back in from the roll n’ roll, the ramp flipped up. I leveled out in the air probably 4 feet high. Came down on my thigh on the edge of the upturned ramp. Then booooof the rest of the way to the cement. 💥💥💥 I heard the sound of my rib cracking inside my head. Cracked my rib and my wrist. It was some off the top rope with a folding chair WWF action. Like Dorthy’s house falling on the Wicked Witch. My worst ever slam #pushing50 ! Just about healed up now. No doctor, no x-rays, like 5 times to the chiropractor. I’m back at it. Tentatively! Gonna get all the pads. Seriously looking into those old people fall suits that inflate. 🤘😎👍

I'm nearly 59. I wear hip and tailbone padded shorts when I skate transition. I don't care if my ass looks fat in them. Several of the old dudes I skate with wear them as well. We have responsibilities. We have no shame. We want to skate as long as possible. My padded shorts, along with all of my safety gear, have saved me from serious injury more than once. And yes I have skate pants I wear over them that are a bit more roomy so I can move freely.

I'm 43. Have slowly started to gear up this year. Only really skate big bowls and pools. Rocking a helmet and big kneepads. Wrists are messed up so sporting a wrist support pretty regularly. Hip pads are on my list to be honest so happy to hear your experience with them. Jacked up my hip pretty bad in a pool a while back. Then fell on it two more times. Too many missed sessions after. We're getting older and that's OK. And we're still skating. So do what ya gotta do to keep skating. Till the wheels come off baby!!!

47 years old, started skating around 3.5 years ago. I didn't wear any protection until about 3/4 months ago, but had a few close calls and bought a helmet for transition, especially when on the bigger transition, bowls or going fast. Don't wear it for flat ground or small banks. And I also introduced a wrist guard for my right hand wrist. this is the hand I always land on......I skate every day and just love it and would hate for it to end, so I also try not to skate when tired as this is when most of my worst slams have happened. Peace!

I finally went and bought one of those inflatable mattresses and brought it to the skate park! Luckily in NY nobody seems to skate before noon. I wanted to use it to help me drop in, but didn’t work. It did help a lot on practicing front side kick turns, cause takes fear from falling backwards.

I took a pretty good slam last week because of a small piece rubber I didn't see in a bowl and I was happy I had my helmet on because I hit my head going into the wall. I'm pretty injury-prone so I'm starting to pad a up a bit more and be a little more sensible with just listening to my body, knowing when I'm tired or unfocused and calling it a day before anything bad happens. I'd like to try these hip pads out, another friend also recommended them to me

I agree with you about knowing when your brain isn’t right to be there for you as a reliable safety mechanism.. Sometimes you can tell that more riding is asking for trouble. I remind myself not to rush a park if I’m pressed for time. Better to experience a park and leave wanting more. I tried to cram in everything I could at a park when running out of time and I misjudged a weird Euro and slammed HARD.

@@sk8fm448 I used to make my own punkrock skinny jeans when you could only buy them online, now the tables have turned, so I'm rockin that 90's hip-hop silhouette but with metal/punk tshirts. Yea the butt goes down way too far for these. Another person on youtube cut that part of the foam out, and then they were fine, so he does that now since they're cheaper than other easily available brands apparently and are just as good. Triple 8 has the "bumsaver" too (also a derby style that is shorter). The bulkiness seemed fine here, I couldn't tell. If one wanted really slim stuff, then there's like motocross shorts with that D30 shock impact material that is very thin but very effective. Oh they updated them to be less annoying with the butt area, and added padding in the gaps. But they may not be available anymore, so who cares.

Skateboarding will never be safe. What's fun about that safe? Doesn't we all started to conquer our fear? What's fun about it if it's safe? The fun is where you defy logic do something dangerous and walk away with it unharm. But you always can prevent any injury, like me i never take off my pads wether skating bowl or box (using a slimmer pads inside my pants), always put my helmet on no matter what i'm skating. The truth is it's just a prevention for the unlucky scenario. You still need to learn how to fall no matter what gear you use either pads or padless.
