Tiny wheels were definitely more preferred in the 90's. I remember when they started getting larger and thinking it looked stupid. Little did I know it gave you better pop having your board higher off the ground...

As a 90's skater having large pants was part of the "skater" look. Tugging both pant legs up a bit before a trick always felt like it looked cool to me also! Then Jenco made their famous "elephant legs" with 50 inch bottoms and that was the beginning of the end!

As a 90s and early 2000s skater the trends I didn't see coming: #1. The influx of pop and jock brands expanding their habitation ($$$) into skateboarding culture. #2. The mainstream acceptance of something that was considered rebellious and misunderstood.

What pisses me off the most is that Sketchers are trying to market as somewhat of a skate shoe, like NikeSB for instance is one of the best skate shoe brands, but they started off with running shoes (i think) and everyone looked at them with concern when they were getting into skateboarding, but SKETCHERS?! Never, what gave me this idea was a TV ad for sketchers of a kid riding a skateboard. IM TELLING YOU RIGHT NOW IF SKETCHERS MAKES MARKET FOR A SKATE SHOE BRAND, I WILL EVAPORATE INTO SAND

What creates the obsession with skateboarding trends? It was easier to be unique pre-Facebook and KZbin because the exposure was limited to magazines and video (skateboarding wasn't mainstream yet)... The unavoidable influence of social media I guess. It's a good reminder to get out and enjoy life and don't miss out on the special moments.

Freestyle isn't a trend, it never was. It's always been part of skateboarding, it's the origins of skating. Although it died off for a majority starting in the early 1990s, few who Freestyled like myself during the 1980s into the early 1990s, we still Freestyled ocassionally after it went under ground. It started making a slow comeback in the early 2000s, getting a strong following in the mid 2010s.

Destroying on purpose a new pair of shoes. I never did that but I remember some friends that when they got new shoes they were like "hey dude, step on them. More, more.". And dragging them on the floor. They used to do the same with tshirts, pants, everything. It was the peak of grunge. It's probably one of the most stupid trends ever. I am talking before tik tok, of course. That sht is a whole new level.

PLLLEEASSE I have been looking for one for years ! Used to be in most skate shops and I'm certain I could find one if I knew what it was called ! However, despite my description being very accurate it isn't the kind of description that lends itself to a Google search. most of these trends aren't exactly new. skating in designer clothes? check Tony Alva in his heydays skating in dunks? almost everybody in the 80's baggy pants? everybody in the 90's and 00's shoelace belts? everybody who wasn't cushioned with money back in the day freestyle? no contests anymore, that's true, but it's still a huge part of skating truth be told, no one really gives a shit how you skate as long as you enjoy yourself, and since skateboarding is mainly underground since the 90's, all flash cunts will be hated and scrutinized. just take a look at what happened to Dyrdek, Scheckler, Margera and the likes. in my opinion they're still great skateboarders, but since they sold out, it was trendy to hate them.

The shoes thing is insane to me. If you have ever spent more than an hour on a skateboard ypu will know very well what grip tape does to your shoes. Skateshoes were already expensive at over $100 a pop which will likely be destroyed in a few months. But to spend upwards of $1000 on a pair of shoes that you are then going to shred on gribtape is just stupid. You might as well go buy some Jordan's and just take a sander to them. Like why do that.... just so stupid so spend so much on something that will just get destroyed. There is no benefit that shoe gives over any other than would be that price tag worth it for how quick you'll need a new pair.....
