I spent 6 long weeks in Funchal. I have never seen so much smoking, so many disabled and elderly people. I got the sense the city was dying. There was no A/C anywhere and it was unbearably hot with mosquitoes everywhere. I couldn't wait to get out of there. If our accommodation had A/C and any of the restaurants we visited did, it would have completely changed the experience. The island is absolutely beautiful but the people are all broken.

huh, I live in Funchal and love it. The mosquitoes are very location dependent. I agree on the number of older people with mobility issues. I don't know why there are so many. AC used to not be needed here, but last summer was brutal. I know people installing AC when they didn't bother before. It's easy to find accommodations with AC but it's not a traditional thing. I'm buying a new apt and it comes with AC.

I moved from Canada to a Beautiful town in Germany. Everyone there told me to get out while I can. After two years I left. Sick and elderly everywhere who hated their life. The local population and their view of their city will definitely impact your quality of life.

@@SallySparks Fellow resident of the island here. If you are from the US, you are not used to walking around much. When people get old, some have mobility issues. I have had few encounters with mosquitos and flying bugs en masse. This is why I chose this place. I don't have AC, use ceiling fans and am just fine.
@desertdweller85207 ай бұрын
There is a lot of smoking in Europe, in general. There is no smoking indoors here. So, I always sit inside if there are a lot of people at a cafe. I'm not sure where you stayed but it's too bad you didn't experience Funchal the way many of us do. Most good hotels here have air conditioning. As for many disabled people, there are some. But many older people have these issues in other places as well. I have never had problems with mosquitos either.

In the USA "Cheap" pricing waterfront Apt's/flat/condo are for ONE and ONLY reason: The owner pays incredibly high monthly fees for (maintenance and other orchestrated costs for the pool, guards, building insurance etc...) So what is the real COST of living there is the MAIN FACTOR - not the unit price.

In our opinion Bulgarian Riviera is the best cost efficient and luxury place to retire in a EU/NATO country. Especially nice is a wealthy and green suburb of Varna called Saints Constantine and Helena where rich or super-rich people live for a cost which is a fraction of US/Canadian inner cities, Bulgaria provides retirement visa, flat 10% income tax (but in the most cases you don't need to pay any Bulgarian taxes since US Social Security is not taxed here and Bulgaria has double-taxation treaty with US)

It fails every single time. Not 90% of the time but 100% of the time. It’s an idea like saying that we can have laws requiring everyone to be happy and pleasant to each other. It’s a fantasy and not a reality. Nature is a free market and free markets are as natural as the universe itself. It’s the only thing that has ever worked.
