Its not the values of the mean or the median, but the values of the x-axis. At about 5:38 on the video we talk about left skewed. Now it is mean < Median < mode. Not we are not talking about the value of the mean or the values of the median and the mode. What we are saying is the corresponding values of the x-axis. Notice that the mean's x-value on the x-axis is lower than the median's x-value on the x-axis. Go ahead, look at the video again.

What if you calculate the Pearson factor with the following formulas. The result turns out negative. That negative result would mean that the frequency distribution is negative skewed even though the mode is not in the extreme? Simple mean= 46.8439 Median= 47.8571 Mode= 47.3684 Skp1= -0.1779 Skp2= -0.0307 Skp1= (mean- mode)/standard deviation Skp2=3(mean- median)/standard deviation Thanks in advance

There are many factors here in play. Your Skp values - did your teacher give you a range when it's not skewed? What I mean is, maybe your Skp values should be smaller than 1 or 1.5. Also, the mode. Are there enough data points in the mode to suggest a "true" mode? What I meant was, if there is only two values that represent the mode from "a lot" of data, then the mode doesn't suggest anything. Also, you standard deviation, I think is 2.948. Think about this. If the distance from the mean to the mode is larger than the spread, then the mean from the mode are far apart. How much is "far apart", well that goes back to the teacher. You see, if the distance from the mean to the mode is 2.948, that would be the same distance as your standard deviation, which your formula Skp1 would be -1 and then that would suggest a "good" distance apart, but again you need to know what your teacher has to say about small values of Skp1 like -1 suggest. Can it be that -1 is now to wide of a gap, and thus there is skewness? My thought is that skp1 and skp2 are small relative to -1 thus not too much skewness, plus the mode is smaller than the median, suggest that there is not skewness going on. Tell me what your teacher told you. I'm interested in knowing. Good luck.

Is "symmetrical distribution" synonymous to "normal distribution"?

+MahoganyMilkshake Not really. When you say symmetrical it just means that one side of the distribution is the same as the other side. For example, a uniform distribution is a square and that would be symmetrical. On the other hand, if you are just starting statistics, then the first distribution that comes to mind when talking about "symmetrical distribution" most people think of the normal distribution.

Sure. Think of it this way. The analogy goes like this. Think of the number line. Now go to zero. From the "right" of zero, are "positive" numbers. So, when we speak of "Right" skewness, it is the same as "Positive" skewness. Also, from zero to the "left" is "negative", thus "Left" skewness is "Negative" skewness. Here is more information. When I say, "Right" skewness, it is right of the mean or "Positive" skewness from the mean; and vis versa. Hope that helps.

When we talk about the mean being less than the median, we are talking about the value of the x-axis, not the frequency count. Check the video again.
