The mental recovery is so much harder than the physical one. So many of us have gone thru that. Way to be patient Phil and let her progress at her own speed.

You're absolutley right. I broke my tibia and fibula that meant 6 months without walk. Sad and grey mental days for me.
@RealCanadanMan4 жыл бұрын
I agree with you on this, I broke my femur in whistler, I was going around a berm and I hit a big rock in the dirt and it chucked me off the back side of the berm and I went down a 70 degree incline and smashed my leg on a log and broke my femur, I was stuck down there for 15 minutes before anyone heard me yelling... it took me a total of about two years to feel comfortable riding downhill again (physically), but I was mentally recovering for much much longer, still to this day I don't ride nearly as fast as i used to, nor do I hit berms as fast and hard as i used to.

Looking at those pics from before the injury I hadn't realised how good she "was", taking that huge step down like a boss in the DH days then scared of the little one on that trail. She looked so nervous and timid on the bike after. Great vid on building the confidence and regaining the skills that still lurk.

For sure. That drop is a pretty intense feature, but from the videos that we've seen on Phil's channel I thought that she was a roadie who Phil was dragging to the mountain. Different perspective for sure!

Man, I have so much respect and sympathy for Hailey. I had been in a similar position where she was before with my motocross riding. Because of a bad crash and injury I went from being one of the fastest kids in the state to the slowest of my classes. It took me years to get back to fighting shape and just this year I finally got a 1st place Championship in one of my classes. So I just wanna say happy birthday to Hailey and here’s to her progression 🤘🏻I know she can do awesome shredding

So awesome for Hailey! Progression while having fun is the key and happy birthday to Hailey! I just watched it again, her attitude is so great "we'll see what the boss says". I love riding with my wife; not the fastest rides or the nastiest terrain but some of the most fun rides for sure. On a side note, it was helpful for me to see the story about Hailey's injury as I had a bad crash this summer. On 8/10/19 I went out for an early morning (5:30AM) ride on my local trails that i’d ridden many, many times. I was about 5 miles into what was supposed to be 12-14 mile when I crashed. It was a minor crash, in fact, other than the main issue (which i’ll get to) you wouldn’t know i’d crashed to look at me; no bruises, abrasions, no dirt on me anywhere. I must have lost focus going into a minor downhill left hand corner and my front tire went up over the small berm; riding it out was not an option due to a fast approaching tree so I dismounted, like i’d done probably hundreds of times over the last 12-13 seasons but this time was different. As I was dismounting I felt my foot hit the ground and, even with earbuds in, heard a sound like a broomstick being snapped over your thigh. I laid face down for a few minutes saying really bad things and when I rolled over my left leg was in front of me but my foot was off to the left and there was a large protrusion in my sock. I knew right away I had a tib/fib FX and I was alone, at 7AM on a Saturday and when I pulled out my phone I had no service…It only took a few minutes to figure out that I had to do something with my foot, at this point the bone had not broken through the skin and I knew that if it did shock, bleeding, infection, possible loss of foot were all in play as I knew it would be some time before somebody found me. Ironically, though I was in the woods, looking around found no suitable sticks to make a splint with so I dragged myself about 10 yards down the trail on my butt with my leg held up and found two sticks but my bike shoes (BOA) have no laces. I took out the pruning shears from my hydration pack that I use all summer for as-needed face slapper maintenance, cut the straps off my hydration pack and straightened my foot out, pushed the bone back and put the splint on. I then yelled for help for 3.5 hours before somebody found me. My wife had just started looking for me (i always tell here where I am and what time to expect me and she rides those trails as well) when I was being taken out of the woods by EMS. I ended up with a displaced tib/fib fracture and had two plates (one inside my leg on Tibia and one on the outside on the Fibula) with 19 screws. It was 4 weeks before even light toe touch weight bearing with crutches and then I got cellulitis the day before I started PT; this pushed me back two weeks. After a couple of weeks of PT I started having a lot of pain in the outside of my ankle where the plate ends and limited range of motion in my ankle (which makes no sense as the break was well above the ankle). So at 9 weeks post-op I had to have the outer plate/screws removed, my ankle joint scraped out and a bone biopsy to make sure that the infection is gone; it was not and i I had another week of antibiotics and all the fun that comes with them. I now have an incision that won't fully heal but i'm doing PT anyway and my range of motion is still significantly limited but Hailey's story gives me hope and makes me realize that I need to focus on what I can do and not on what I can't do. I'm hoping to get back to riding, hiking, fishing, etc soon but it will still be some time i'm sure. Thanks for the great content and allowing us all to live a little bit through the two of you. Sorry for the wall of text.

Seeing how hard she used to ride and how many steps back she had to go hurt my heart. I recently gave up BMX because of a broken elbow and am taking up mountain biking as a replacement. I love just riding around new trails but it's frustrating to struggle on some of the basics. Rock hops, root rolls, small jumps, etc.
@SkillsWithPhil5 жыл бұрын
To be honest, she’s a much better rider now. In the past she was more of a riskier rider. These days she’s much more cautious which means slower progress but less time off the bike due to injuries. Today, we rode some technical trails that she would not do before she got injured. Jumping has just been something that’s been outside her comfort zone.
@TeddyParker5 жыл бұрын
@@SkillsWithPhil Yeah it's super important. It's the opposite with me. I can't wait to do some jumps on the MTB but technical trails just give my brain pause. Especially any technical incline, a single mistake and you are walking up lol

Happy B-Day Hailey! Great video! So many of us run into the same situation. For me it was 3 busted ribs, and getting back to where I was has been a struggle. We all fall, it's a matter of getting back up, which isn't always easy. Hell, trying to progress, even without an injury, can be intimidating.
