I plan to do Secrets before Janthir, but I'm glad to see this has been so well recieved and am looking forward to it. Excellent review Austin, thank you!

I played at release for a couple months. Do you gotta start from those same early areas or is there an updated entry point? Been thinkin about checking it out again.
@cjb1104 ай бұрын
@@bnutz3k I *think* it'll be locked to level 80 (though you do get a booster when you buy, but never recommended for your first/only character, enjoy the original game first), and the story starts in Lions Arch, and then takes you to the new zones. It's only a minor issue for alts, if you don't want to do the story you need to tp to friend/group to unlock the waypoint.
@kevinpetit38694 ай бұрын
@@bnutz3k still the same early areas, the entry point hasn't changed in all these years. The levelling experience has been tweaked quite a bit, though.
@metroid2k4 ай бұрын
@@bnutz3k As others have mentioned, yes the early areas are the same, however the general levelling experience has been massively overhauled and streamlined since release. I personally never played at release, but have it on good authority from a friend who did that levelling is much better now. You have to do classic Tyria from 1-80, but once you hit 80 you can jump into any expansion that you have purchased, since theres no levelling up from that point onward, you can literally go where you want and do what you feel like. Most expansions also come with a boost that you can use to jump a character straight to 80, so if you arent that fussed in the story and just want to jump into an expansion, that is another option. I did try this originally with an engineer, but I felt confused as to what was going on and what I should have been doing (especially as I wasnt used to this kind of "go where you like, kill what you like" MMO) so in the end I levelled a character from 1-80 both to help me learn the game, and get into the story a bit more. Having now done that, I can comfortably hop onto an 80 character now and not feel overwhelmed, and can focus on the various expansions (and the cool perks each offer).

GW2 did what probably no other MMO did before : keep their past content relevant. It's just crazy the amount of people there is in maps you think would be deserted because there's just new stuff to do. You're actually rarely alone. So for me who's 2 expansions late because I've taken back the game just a few weeks ago (the last time I played it kinda seriously was in 2019), I still have so much stuff to do and I haven't felt the need to buy Secrets of the Obscure yet (I think I'll just do expansions in order) So even if you really want to try GW2 for free, without any expansion, I still think this would be worth the time. Unlike other MMOs, you will still have a real nice experience because it's not completely deserted by veterans, and that might make you want for more

The warclaw's new tricks are both tons of fun but also really smartly worked into the events and normal gameplay loop. The homestead system has genuinely one of the best decoration systems I've personally encountered in gaming. And the new spears are overall a better crop of new profession features than the Soto weapons and the EoD specs imo. All in all I haven't enjoyed every aspect of a GW2 expansion this much since Path of Fire. Hopefully the rest of the expansion updates keep up this level of quality.

This is making me want to check the expansion out. The maps look really open and beautifully designed. PoF was my favorite expansion, with some of my favorite locations, for just these reasons. They haven't been able to capture that in any of the expansions that followed, but this looks like it might be a return to form.

I was looking to return to GW2 and I just found my reason. Thank you. It's been a few years and I'm looking forward to hopping back in

I bought GW2 13 years ago and loved it then. Not even sure what my login info is anymore but I’m happy to see the game still evolving

Good review, something I missed is if it even worth it for new players? Like, a new casual player probably will only experience this when all the older players have quit or are at the endgame leading to empty maps.

Don't worry, gw2 consider all players to be in the same mega server, so maps are always full, even old ones

There's a lot of content that max level players go to that takes place on older maps which makes most places feel alive. This game also incentives alts so I wouldn't worry about feeling left out or questing in dead maps when playing GW2! There are people everywhere. It's fun!

GW2 doesn't really have empty maps, the core original maps still have players doing quests, gathering and events (like world bosses). I'd say the lowest pop maps will be the Living World ones as they aren't advertised as heavily and can be missed by new players thinking the xpacs are the only content they need to buy, but even then they have profitiable meta events in quite a few of them, so you'll often find trains running through them. Or players just chasing acheivements etc.

So happy Guild Wars 2 is still going, I only wish they'd brought it to console

Is Austin as good or perhaps sometimes better than Ralph. Wow what a fabulous review...I love both of you so much. this may be the most comprehensive and well articulated review on this channel, ever! Bravo boys! You are both superb!

It is, and you don't need an expensive pc for it.

It runs on a potato PC anything from the last 10 years with decent integrated gpu or modest graphics card, some RAM, some Windows, cheap SATA ssd, good to go @1080p.

Secrets of the Obscure had me worrying about whether ANET could deliver on yearly expansions and make them feel chunky enough that they didn't feel shallow. The first patch for SotO was great and I was impressed but the following patches seriously made me worry once more. It's early days and yes this is only patch one of four so we COULD be in for a bumpy ride but... Janthir Wilds, for me so far, is the best expansion they've created for the game in 12 years. By 'best' I don't mean favourite, that honour still remains with End of Dragons. I mean the most well created, well designed, well written piece of content ANET have put out. Apart from a few bugs at launch and apart from the 2nd map being a little threadbare and me worrying about it long term this is a beautifully crafted expansion and one that, over a decade later, has me in awe at what the talented people at ANET are capable of. This is what MMOs should aspire to be... a criminally underrated game in every respect.

I don't play MMOs and will most likely never play GW2, but I love watching people I respect talk about games they love. Videogames are so cool.

GW2 is something unusual in the MMO space. As someone who has played this genre during the Golden era of MMOs and watched the genre collapse in on itself, it's so interesting to see how strong GW2 stands. Strong is a generous word because there is never going to be what we experience back in 2006-2012 for MMOs but NCsoft and Arena is still doing something right. I remember doing Fractals the last time I played GW2 and boy is it ever satisfying to hit those DPS marks and beat Master tier.
