I've had great success skipping with a St. Croix Medium 6' 10" Target cranker, Tatula reel, and 50 pound braid. But I want to give your setup a try since I'm around 6' 2" as well. In my experience braid has proven to be very durable and catches tons of fish.

I've never tried that. Thanks for breaking it down and suggesting what line, etc. to use.

I suffered some injuries to my shoulder and wrist while serving a combat tour over sea's , So flipping /skipping with baitcaste'rs is out for me, But I have a come up with a solution, Zebco 33 spincast reel , 15 lbs line, No worry of backlash and no pressure on my damaged wrist/arm , It works my PB is an 11.5 on Lake Lanier Ga. Thank God for Walmart tackle !!!!

Why not braid for skipping,? Also it sounds like the rod you're describing is medium heavy power or heavy power with moderate tip ? Lastly , should ones height determine the rod length when skipping? Good video. Thanks
@Wired2Fish4 жыл бұрын
Todd Thorne Those are great questions. I personally don’t use braid for skipping because it digs into itself on the reel spool. If your jig takes one bad bounce you’ll be digging out a backlash for several minutes. I guess it’s just not as forgiving as fluorocarbon. The rod I’m describing is honestly tough to describe. But I think you come pretty close by saying heavy power with a moderate tip. Perhaps I should have explained that a little better. I used to think your height “should” determine rod length when skipping, but I’m not quite sure these days. I am a fairly tall guy and I tend to be most accurate and comfortabke with a 7-0 or 7-2 rod. I won’t go any higher than 7-2 when I’m skipping. But one of my best friends who is one if the most accomplished tournament anglers in my state is a short guy. Well under 6 feet. And he swears by a 7-6 skipping rod. I don’t get how he does it, but he is a wizard with that thing in his hands. So I’m not quite sure how to answer that. I’m just being honest with you. I have to believe that everyone’s casting and rod motion is different when skipping docks, so I’d think that would dictate rod length more than height. I hope this helps. We appreciate you watching! - Walker

That's funny. I have found braid to be forgiving, and fluorocarbon a nightmare. Every setup is different. No two rod, reel, line setups are the same.

A 7ft mh-h fast rod is a good starting place to learn to skip as it's an easy reference point to know if you want something shorter or longer, faster or slower, and you probably already have one. I personally learned on braid and if I didn't it would've costed $100s in fluoro or would've been a lot of time cutting and respooling on mono. I would suggest 50-80lb braid(if you are to use braid) to learn and while the braid can be tough to pick out, a bad backlash in that weight range isn't going to snap like fluoro would if you kinked it up good with a backlash. If you don't go braid 15-20lb mono is good, it's cheap and the thicker line has less loops thus easier to pick out, you can also cast the top 20-30 yards off and tape the spool so only that much line can backlash when learning. If you're at the spot where no matter what you do the lure just splashes hard into the water, use a spinning rod to start to learn the motion and get a lure skipping across the water instead of bombing. A weightless wacky rig senko is a great starter, although sometimes I feel the motion can be more forgiving with it and may lead to frustration when switching lures and to a baitcaster. Well the saying of perfect practice makes perfect still holds.

What are your thoughts on skipping a 1/4 oz jig with a bulkier trailer? I have had that thought on my mind for a little while I have just been really slow to try it? I would definitely have to use a true MH rod and maybe go down in lime size. Am I on the right track?

Does a DC reel help with skipping?
@TonyChm4 жыл бұрын
Yes. Very much.
@Wired2Fish4 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! They run a little higher in price but perform as advertised. The Daiwa Tatula SV TWS reels can greatly reduce backlashing as well when you get the settings dialed (and for less $$).
