Oh my. The skunk playing with the orange kitten brought me to tears! My old yellow mouser's best friend was a skunk the lived under one of my sheds. This was almost twenty years ago now, but I still see Tanner and Frank snuggling on the porch in the sun.

There is a beautiful skunk that comes up on my carport at night when I sit outside and watch the stars and play Solitaire. He doesn't seem terribly skittish, and even came up to me and rubbed his nose on my sock-clad toes. Naturally, he eats the cat food, then he just explores. I have walked outside and surprised him (and me!), but he just scurries away to the edge of the carport, then turns and looks at me. Last night he played with some empty bags, rolled around on an old rug and just entertained himself for probably 30 minutes, while I played on my phone. Truth be told, I was too afraid to get up because I don't want to startle him and get sprayed! I wonder if he would've sprayed me already if he was going to do so? One night he played with my old sneakers that I keep outside for yardwork. I really really want to pet him, but I don't know if he would bite, spray or both! Anyway, he's gorgeous and I think I am in love! I had no idea skunks were so doggone cute!

If you crouched down and the skunk approaches you, s/he is unlikely to spray. But as with any wild animal, you could get bitten. I’d say play it by ear and pay attention to body language.

Onlly if he was surprised or in fear. A little humming or soft whistle to remind him you're there and then easily exit would most likely work fine. If he sees you as a food source, he will be around often. Also if he gets food from you or watches you place it out for him.

If he's hanging out with you, he has most likely already sensed that you are ok. As long as you don't make any sudden movements or loud noises and just continue to do your thing, he will be more comfortable. I have had many encounters with skunks and every time I am so surprised at how calm and sweet and playful they are. Same as all animals. I don't know why humans always think they are all a bunch of insane, disease ridden psychopathic killers. I pet bees, too. They feel like pipe cleaners. Not Bumblebees, mind. They do not like any contact. Learned that lesson... That sounds so awesome, watch the stars and play solitaire.

I think the skunk would've sprayed you several times if that one wanted to. Maybe you can but it'll likely take time and maybe let the skunk sniff your hand first but if you're not comfortable, that's quite okay and understandable.

I first met a skunk at a petting zoo. He was super friendly. He seemed like he wanted to be petted. The keepers said it was because he was neutered that he was friendly

I miss my skunk posse. Used to have a forest beside my place before I moved and skunks would show up each night to get the cat food we would put out for them. Afterward they would play together in our yard. Then they’d spend part of the evening searching the yard for grubs. They kept me entertained and my yard healthy. Plus they are so cute and super smart. A couple of them would even climb onto our porch if we were late feeding them. One of them would tag along with a raccoon and come to the door to make sure we didn’t forget to put some food out. One of the skunks had a club foot. We named him Chip after the Beauty and the Beast kiddo. It always felt nice seeing him come tottering along with his pack.

My mom had wild skunks as pets when I was 4. I had wild skunks living under my porch. Kids played 8n & out. Never sprayed. Until someone tried to break in. Lol Last summer sitting outside. A skunk walked right up to me. While I was whisling to the birds and listening to Christian sermon. Just to listen. Talked to him. He walked away. Next house. Spooked and sprayed. Lol

They actually make great guards against poachers and trespassers. And once sprayed make it easy for law enforcement to identify. I kinda wish my skunks have a purple dye in their spray to make it harder for trespassers to remove the evidence of trespassing on my property.

Yep! They’re very docile and quite gentle, and as long as you get their scent glands remove will not be very destructive (not any more than a cat would). They can actually make wonderful pets
