If he wanted to be in the army then he would have enlisted and that would be his choice. He shouldn’t be forced to do national service or as it is voluntary for peanuts . As a former Regular Soldier and military training instructor I am in two minds with the proposed compulsory National Service with the threat of arrest, possible conviction and imprisonment. On the one hand I believe National Service is a valuable tool which can teach young people some useful life skills, build confidence and give them some purpose to their life rather than them sitting idle on the dole for years on end with no future prospects. That said not all young people are suited to a military disciplined lifestyle there are many who join the Regular Forces and leave before they have completed their basic and phase 2 training. To be honest I don't think the modern military really want's youngsters who have no desire to be in the armed forces. I value the time I served in the army and from my experience it's not a good fit for the military or for the individual concerned to force people to serve when we are not at war. My older brother who was a National Serviceman in the 50's hated it and was eventually thrown out of the army. By all mean's have a voluntary National Service , NOT compulsory with the threat of imprisonment for draft dodgers. I think the government would better serve ALL the young people of our nation by providing top class training and good quality job placements with a proper living wage. The PMs proposal like all his policies is doomed to fail. The Tory's are out on their arse at the next election anyway.

My dad described national service as a joke. He joined up as a regular so he was trained. But national service men were just used for lots of time wasting labour and tasks that many were overqualified to do. But he sadly used to remember that many lost their lives in conflict as well. He flew in air ambulances in the RAF during the Korea conflict and other zones. As for replacing university degrees with government apprenticeships, does anybody remember Youth opportunities in the 1980s, I painted shed panels. It taught me the need to get a real education. These policies are appalling. My grandchildren are not going to be forced into doing any of this rubbish.

As a soldier navy or airforce young people learn their skills and are guided to a profession. In U.K. there is work otherwise how comes people from other countries are flooding in and it is not for the benefits only... Because they get the benefit and wotk as well... Under the table payment....
