One of the best concerts i had the Honor of attending was at the Nashville fairgrounds in the summer of 1973! Skynyrd was the warm-up band for ZZ Top. One of the band members tore their t-shirt into strips, they all tied on headbands and marched out to the Confederate taps beat. One would go left next one to the right. A grand entrance of showmanship. From the first note they were Smoking Hot ( so tight)!! They only had Pronounced out but Ronnie introduced us to a bunch of New songs off Second Helping ; our New album out soon". This was my first of many concerts and 50 years of listening & singing along. Have to thank my buddies Mike & Gary for inviting me to go along that Sunday. A shout out to my 93 yr. Old Mother who would play their music while riding in the car; D.J. would turn to me and say...... They are so tight! Yes, I would respond with a shit eaten 😁 on my face. Knowing I had one Cool Mother who appreciated Lynyrd Skynyrd like me and All my friends till this day! D. J. 's in heaven now listening to Elvis, Eagles and SKYNYRD!

@@johnsullivan9651my pops who died in 18 at 83 was a DJ in the late 60’s and ear70’s. He brought me home the Pronounced album in 73. I instantly fell in love with that album and still have it. It’s been through it all these years. I thank God I too had a super cool parent.

I always believed that too. This is my favorite lineup and to me Allen Collins is my favorite guitarist in the band. The other 3 are tied foe second but if I had to pick a second clearly Ed King was the one and he too is underrated. Now Gary and Steve could just as easily carry this band. But Allen is still incredible and like Ronnie no Ronnie no Skynyrd no Allen same thing he’s that vital to Skynyrd’s incredible sound!

You are being cheated, we all are today. I'm blessed to experience the artists in 1970s-80s as a growing child, but now see we were being led away from families, jobs and farms by those promoting and using these talented amazing artists as lures of influence, that's why I think Ronnie was replaced by Johnny and changed spirit of band, similar to Bon Scott replaced in 1981 for his song Beating Around The Bush on Highway to Hell album. John Lennon, Jimi Hendrix and Bob Marley had no bands to replace them and could carry on without them during those days of changes.

Way before 24/7 cable as we just had maybe 3 or 4 channels on the TV. Me and my best friends were playing poker one night as we were just 18 as we saw on the TV a photo of Skynyrd, we had to wait to see what happened as we waited until the news came on. When the news came on they reported Skynyrd’s plane crash, but that’s all they said and later they gave us terrible news. There were not many channels on the TV and No Mobile phones. When the 10 pm news came on as we were devastated to hear the news! 😔 We were all stunned as they were our favorite band for sure! We were at least blessed to have seen the original Skynyrd 6 times in concert as they came to Mobile and Pensacola all of their tours! I still crank Skynyrd all the time!

+itsadogsworld yaknow he merely threw the idea around, he never set any definite plans for that to happen. That was also before Gaines joined the band, after that Ronnie was re-inspired with Gaines on board. It also had nothing to do with him being "bored", it was because the alcohol-driven lifestyle of Skynyrd had started to take its toll on Ronnie's health and also because he wanted more time to spend with his daughter. Learn your facts before making a fool out of yourself.

No filters, nothing but some minor PA feedback, and Ronnie singing "ON THE HUNT" like a man possessed with that hypnotic descending bass line.He sounds better than Joplin for sure, and doesn't miss a note, high or low. What a powerful set. Jeez, they were beginning to soar at Winterland. By 77 and by bringing in Steve Gaines they went to another stratosphere. What a short time they were there. A band soaked in talent built around the songwriting and singing of one man who just stood there. He did not need to dance around. He cannot be replaced by a brother, or anyone. He was Ronnie Van Zant. He was Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Trust me Rusty we got to the show at 8am it was raining for about 3 hours someone got a Parachute and tarps to cover us while we waited in line for the concert and after it stopped raining it got cold they let us in early about 5 pm! We never heard Lynyrd Skynyrd before and Freebird was the last song they played!!!!!! needless to say a couple of us were blown away by the song but everyone wanted The Who to play and after the concert we got a flat tire and we had no jack it took a long time for someone to let us borrow their jack!!!!!!!!!!!! can't make that shit up Bro!!!!!!

I was at this show and have managed to remember quite a few things, First, during "I Ain't the one" Ronnie walked toward the front of the stage Spinning the mic as a HUGE Confederate Flag unfurled in the background, 2) I can still see all of the young ladies in the crowd up on the shoulders of the guys during Free Bird.... After that, the band walked off stage and a few of the band members emerged (either after Free Bird or the Encore) to tell the crowd that they "Had played everything they knew how w/o Billy, because he cut his hand"...Then last year the band (What is left of it) played in S.D. at Humphrey's by the Bay, I showed up and waited in the Parking lot with a guitar I wanted Gary to sign. As the show ended and the guys streamed past me on the way to their bus/van, I asked Gary to sign and he kept walking. So I said "Aw C'mon man!, I was at the Winterland show where Billy did not play because of a cut on his hand"...Gary stopped looked at me and said, "You were at that show"? "Yes" I replied. "You came out and told the crowd you had played everything you could w/o BP" he smiled at me and signed my guitar

I love the fact that Ed King plays 4 different guitars and fills in piano solos because Billy Powell had hurt his hand! That's the theory.(love Ed's slide guitar work) Ed sings backup vocals on Whisky Rock and Roll, Gimme 3 Steps, Don't Ask Me No Questions, Sweet Home Alabama. I love the original line up the best but Gaines was great and a great addition. I would of liked to see what they would of recorded if not for the obvious! Long Live Skynyrd, Fly that Confederate Flag Proudly! Gary and Allen and Ed were very special and never duplicated (The Original 3 guitar attack) Check out the sustain Gary uses out of his 1959 Les Paul and his amp at 28:40 ... This version of "Call Me the Breeze" kicks azz You can hear Ed on a Les Paul playing fill in licks and adds a great solo to go along with Gary's great solo and Allen playing rhythm. Wow no piano but the 3 guitar attack kills.. Ed Kings fill in leads on Sweet Home Alabama and Freebird are epic I ran lights and helped on sound for my brothers R&R bands as we were growing up Check Ronnie at 30 seconds into the show he looks over and motion thumbs up. He was telling the sound man to turn up the monitors so he could hear himself sing . Only roadies and band members understand that.lol

Absolutely the saddest thing, Ronnie's death. I was only 11, and knew nothing of LS at this age, but was shocked to learn lately, that had he lived, he would be close to my dad's age now around 74. I see Ronnie and MELT. 😁 We can only imagine the wonderful songs, RVZ, would've written, had he lived. Judy, Ronnie's widow, sobbed during the memorial dedication, when she recalled, how Ronnie, always referred to himself, as an Alabama man, which was weird, since he was from Florida, so his death in Alabama, was a tragic tie in to this. Judy said, she came to get him there to bring him home for the last time, and some 40 years later, you could still feel all the pain!

Where I went to high school in Marin across the bridge from San Francisco, southern rock was huge! A bunch of us girls would take the bus over to the city, get dropped off on VanNess & Geary and walk up to the venue, Winterland. Then we’d walk back down to catch the bus back to Marin. Those were the fuckin’ days. My dad was a cop in the city and he thought this was ok. Never could do that now a days. Blessed to grow up where & when I did. Saw so many epic shows!! This is the best footage I've ever seen of this version of the band. The two baddest of the badasses on stage (and in most the early pictures) are definitely Ronnie, and Ed King. In the tribute band, we saw a kinder, gentler version of Ed, and further refinement of his talent. Liked Ed's solo following Gary's slide on Free Bird. Ed, Gary, and Allen were my favorite three guitarists in the band. They wrote the book on how to play without stepping on each other and they were the masters of that art. Where's the time machine? I saw Skynyrd in January of 1976, with the Outlaws opening. I believe that Ed King had already left. It was one of the stand out concerts I went to. Ronnie VanZant was always in control, on stage. He had an impeccable sence of timing. A very tight band. Any concert footage, no sloppiness, or screwups. The concert sounds were as good as the vinyl sounds. I don't know of any groups that had that ability. Skynyrd died when Ronnie did. What a loss.

That was great! I grew up listening to them, but never saw them live. Had a bunch of their albums. They were all great albums. They never made a bad album, or a bad song for that matter. Man, they sounded great live. Those boys could rock!

I miss these guys so much. It rained while watching this, remembering when I was young and how lucky we were to see Skynyrd play. Thanks so much for posting this awesome piece of music history.

+robbie p Yep. Looks like he's doing a lot of bending. I don't know if it was this concert, (I haven't gotten that far in the video), I also liked his work in On The Hunt.

Where was Billy Powell on this date. His contribution was essential to the live performances of so many tunes as were the sweet "Honkettes!" No one else's band could boast such attributes!
