The slow time shout is considered an alteration spell and it's affected by stability. I had a character who would use slow time, dragonhide, and then dual bound sword and still take down a couple enemies before slow time wore out. After I got next mage there were points where slow time slowed itself down too, and wouldn't wear out until I reloaded my save or waited twenty minutes. I cleared all of the volkihar castle with one use of slow time.

I may be in the minority here, but in my option the "magic resistance" perks are 100% worth it. Unlike spell absorption they work against dragons, and a permanent 10% damage resistance against a huge range of appoints is deferentially worth a single perk.

? Spell absorption works on dragon shouts tho
@yawnosmannonen49345 жыл бұрын
Spell absorption works with dragons breath attacks, all spells, and enchanted weapons effects, also all poisons and possibly even diseases can't be applied the the character either as they are considered magical effects by the game engine when it happens, dragon breaths will even regenerate your magicka while actively casting a spell I've found on several occasions( but that might be a glitch).
@rheiagreenland47144 жыл бұрын
You are right my clever sir! It is great for all characters. In fact, as a warrior, the most likely school to do if you do any is alteration, and warriors certainly enjoy that extra magic resistance. Mages like it even more as they have low health pools. Great perks to get once you've got all the major ones that you can get at that level, and it's convenient as you're not too far away from high-level magic users. Another one of the reasons why Bretons are quite possibly the best race in Skyrim.
@kaylethejudicator23684 жыл бұрын
Spell absorption earlier I would say is not as great. Thing with absorption is that you either absorb, or you don't. and if you don't, you take full damage minus racial resistances. Additionally, due to lack of proper gear and enchantments, the reduction on magicka regen hurts any character that has any minimal amount of magic as part of their gameplay. Spell absorption becomes more useful imo once you can offset the negatives, get a bit of resistances to survive the rng & get your alteration to 100 so you can use Atronach perk with the stone, giving you 70% spell absorption in unmodded skyrim. The amount of damage enemies do earlier game with magic due to lack of points in health is just not worth the rng yet.

I can never decide between Alteration, Restoration, and Illusion. The first has the best passives and makes the early game a breeze, and even lets me ignore Smithing. The second is so useful that I almost always end up relying on it at some point with every character. The third is both incredibly convenient (pacify to skip enemies, or pickpocket their clothes away for the lols) and hilarious.

How do you do a video on Alteration & never even mention the transmute spell? Heading to Halted Stream Camp & getting the ability to turn iron ore into silver ore, then turn silver ore into gold ore is one of the first things I do as a new character. It starts paying dividends right away, helping your smithing by having a bunch of gold to make into jewelry, & only having to buy super cheap iron ore in order to do it.

@thosebloodybadgers84997 жыл бұрын
LUL the problem with Skyrim is that any character becomes a god at some point, it's just a matter of time, unless you restrain yourself to some really basic gear or spells Who needs to put any effort in fighting when you can just spam m1 and healing potions anyway, right?
@lul61247 жыл бұрын
I actually use immersive potions, so you cannot spam potions constantly to get the healing effect. Its also really tedious to collect so many ingredients just to do that. Moreover, you require investment in the alchemy tree to constantly produce potions at top level strength. Since ordinator has over 400 perks, perk points become very valuable for someone who caps themselves at level 81 (like me). Hence the perk investment is simply not worth it compared to casting a spell (IMO at least, unless you play an alchemist type character). IIRC you cannot upgrade the alchemy station from fabricate object (apocalypse spell) either so technically your potions are never at full strength even with perk investment. 80 alteration for 2/2 intuitive magic and 40 restoration for respite and 2/2 mastery isnt a lot of heavy investment. With 2/2 restoration mastery and 40 restoration, I already have 20% restoration magnitude. With sailors repose, I have another 10%. With wild shrines, I have another 15%. With welloc, I have another 10%. With dual casting I have 2.2x magnitude. With 100 magicka and 2 spirit tutors, I have another 1.05*1.05 magnitude. With 50 base heal from fast healing, I end up with a free dual casted heal for approximately 183 hp. This should mostly heal me to full HP or at least even half HP for a level 10 character. But then again this is why you download mods like wildcat, with injuries and stagger. Combat mechanics become more important and you actually need to git gud a little instead of spamming healing spells to survive every fight.
@SevenThunderful5 жыл бұрын
Alteration is usually my number 1 magic school. If you do ebony armor dual casting and have mage armor it lasts quite a while and is sufficient for most mage builds. But the real bonus is the fact that you don't have to carry around all that heavy equipment. Add in conjuration with bound bow and bound sword and you don't have to carry around weapons either.

Alteration + Restoration = the best possible mage build in the game bar none. seriously. In this order become undead (vampire), then get Restoration necromage perk. this increases ALL spell effects on undead even buffs and your now an undead vampire. This is when you want to select the alteration perk atronach to get magic absorb now go get the atronach stone buff. this will both be buffed up by necromage and now together equal >100% magic absorb. Congratulations, you are now immune to all magic/dragon shouts/poisons and will have unlimited magic when fighting mages or dragons. so now your only fear is melee and arrows. also your basically an undead Demi god at this point. also all your spell are more powerful because of the interplay between being a vampire and necromage.
@snappletrolling24856 жыл бұрын
Heavy armor, enchanting and destruction essentially does the same thing without losing your regeneration during the day, and you won't die to draugr deathlords with ebony bows from hell. Heavy armor first off all blocks loads of melee damage, and can be enchanted to decrease magicka usage to 0 for either destruction or conjuration. It can also be enchanted with other things to reduce magic damage if mages are really giving you that much trouble. Even if magic isn't your thing, you can just swap those enchants to buff your weapon or blocking skills, or even sneaking skills if you really wanted to. Any build I do tends to rely on heavy armor, although that's because in the event I run out of magicka or get caught sneaking by an army of bandits, I'm not automatically fucked because my defense is super low. End-game it doesn't matter as much and I find myself using the black book to reset my skills to play as different builds on the same character. Either way, it's mostly just preference. Most people playing vanilla Skyrim end up becoming a demigod by the end regardless of their build.

About the mage armor perks- you have to have a very high enchanting level in order to enchant armor with anything like the same kind of magicka regen and magicka fortify enchants you get with robes. So if you aren't going to invest heavily in enchanting, or if a high enchanting level is much further along in your future, the mage armor perks are super. Sure, at higher levels those robe enchants make a lot less of a difference (if you have been investing in magicka when you level, and also because of spell cost reductions in whatever school you are good at) and you will have tied up 3 perks in Mage Armor, but if you are a classic destruction mage at that level nothing will live long enough to get through your flesh spells anyway. For that matter, I have had level 40+ mages whose health and magic absorption was so high that I didn't bother casting flesh spells anymore so at that point you could take Alteration Legendary and get all your perks back. But at lower levels, when you really need the help, the Mage Armor perks are great and you won't be able to enchant armor with anything like the same levels of magicka regen/fortify as you get with for example the Arch-Mage robes. So they make sense.
@NobodyDungeons3 жыл бұрын
The perks alone are worth going into alteration because 30% magic resistance might not seem like much, but it is more than you think because that potentially frees up an enchanting slot and in combination with things like the agent of mara passive effect along with other things it ends up being very good especially since leveling alteration is extremely easy even more so with 100 enchanting so the perks you'd spend in alteration are gotten from leveling alteration.

You need level 100 alteration to get the atronach perk plus the spell absorption screws over your conjuration spells because it absorbs them once you cast them which is only made worse with the atronach stone so its probably not worth it for conjurers to get the atronach perk as it requires max level alteration. The stability perk though doesn't only affect alteration spells but also other things like shouts(ex: slow time) plus it only requires 70 alteration so its easier to get which makes it worth a lot in my opinion.

Magic absorption also effects positive spells, like healing, summons, and even flesh spells. I prefer resistance, because it has no downsides. And as you mentioned, you can have max magic resistance (85%) without equipment and potions, with only passive effects. And it stacks with elemental resistances, up to around 97% reduction. This is especially useful because armor doesn’t effect magic resistance. On a side note, flesh spells are for the most part really weak on their own, and mage armor perk is useless. Highest you can get is 300 from ebony flesh with mage armor, which is about 30-40% damage reduction, including the lord stone extra 50 armor. The armor cap is 80% damage reduction. However, you might have noticed I didn’t mention dragon hide. Dragon hide gives you 80% damage reduction, or more accurately, a .2x multiplier to damage. And this stacks with armor (but not flesh spells, which is kinda dumb), so long as you don’t change armor after casting the spell, letting you surpass the cap and reach 96% damage reduction. But it is noticeably not effected by mage armor perk, which is why mage armor is mostly useless once you have the spell. However, the weakness of this spell is it’s high cost and low duration. The duration is offset by the stability perk, and dragonhide is also one of the only two master level spells that can be dualcast. This brings it up to 99 seconds, compared to the 30 it has by base. And this can be further increased by alchemy, since alteration potions increase duration. However, the cost is still an issue, even more so if you dual cast it. This can be bypassed either by enchantments or secret of arcana. So if you wear enough armor to reach armor cap (this can be done with light or heavy armor, with or without smithing. I’d suggest light armor but that’s less cool so you do you), have enchantments and potions to max elemental resistances, have max magical resistance, and us dragonhide, you can have 96% physical reduction and 97% elemental magic reduction. If you wanna take it a step further, use spell breaker shield and never take damage again. I’ve never fully tested this build, although I’ve been meaning to. I have a alteration character but they don’t use armor so I’m going to start again. I haven’t tested the dragon hide stacking with armor, but it seems true according to most sources I’ve seen.

Let's see if Mage Armor perks are worth it. Ebonyflesh is the second best Mage Armor spell in the game. It gives the caster 100 armor. Getting all three Mage Armor perks triples the effect, bringing it up to 300 armor (which absorbs roughly 50% of all physical damage). The best Light Armor set in the game is Dragonscale Armor. Without the shield, it gives you a total of 82 armor. If you have level 100 in Light Armor, the armor rating is increased by 40%, bringing the total to 114,8 armor. If you use 3 perks in the Agile Defender perk to raise your Light Armor rating by 60%, this, combined with the 40% increase from skill level, gets you 164 armor. Combine that with the Ebonyflesh spell without the perks, which gives you 100 armor, and you end up with 264 armor, which is less than the armor you get just from the spell with perks. Of course, there are other perks, enchantments, and smithing to raise your armor rating way higher, but these require a lot more time, investment in other skills and usage of perk points on other skill trees. So while, in the end game, where you've got pretty much everything maxed out, the Mage Armor perks might not be so good, in the early and mid game they're really good.

We know they can teleport themselves and even other objects,, they even reveal that they are able to see into the future and see possible timelines of future events. when they reveal that events are already spiraling out of control and that it will be up to the player to decide the events to come, and that even warning you of that is breaking thei rules of non-interference. The psijics clearly view themselves as somehow above or outside of tamriel. considering that they can makes their island vanish from the face of tamriel is not surprising that they see themselves in that way. and one thing you can't forget is that Mannimarco was a Psijic monk who got kicked out of the order for necromancy and the man who started the original mages guild and invented the spell creation altars and item creation altars so magic could be "cheaply" available to the masses for the firsrt time, was also a Psijic monk

It should be noted that Dragonskin is able to reduce damage beyond the damage reduction cap that armors provide.

I like Dragonhide. Mix with Dragonskin and you have a matching set! Of course Bretons are renowned for abstract thinking... and frailer bodies. I don't blame Fudgemuppet. His name sounds like an object often stored in a box.

one thing i'd liek to add to the atronarch perk is that it not only works iwth the atronarch stone but also with miraaks robes which further increase your magic absorption. i laos think that stabillity is worth it just for the sake of me not having to change my equiped spells as often. also teh best alteration perk is candlelight, it's actually really good especially for those black books where you take damage when in the dark, cast magelight and just walk through it at your own pace.

spell absorption is funny cuz it counts spells cast on you, so healing spells, conjuration spells and other may not activate and you get a ton of magicka back from it, usually more than you had to use but its a weird quirk

With the Ordinator per overhaul mod it is great plus you just put your most used melee spell on 1 and then best alteration flesh spell on 2 and boom easy to use for a good 120 armor from one of the lower ones because the mod is fucking great for mages.

Players don’t give dragonhide enough credit. Sure it has a wind up time and it only lasts 30 seconds. But what makes dragonhide unique is that it’s one of the only master level spells that CAN be dual casted. If you enchant your way to 100% alteration casting cost reduction, invest in the dual casting and stability perks, and become a necromage vampire, dragonhide can last for nearly 3 minutes. That’s plenty of time for preparation and most enemy encounters. PLUS it saves you 3 perk points since you don’t have to spend them on the Mage Armor perk for Ebonyflesh.

Magical Armor looks cool and it's weightless and gives you decent protection = Worth it! Paralyze is super powerful and turns the fierces Draugr Death Overlords into little bitches = Worth it! Candlelight helps you find valuable items and potent healing potions that save your life in the next fight = Worth it! Detect Life helps you make a strategy before the fight in terms of positioning and who to attack first, etc. Plus it looks cool and helps your characters level up crazy fast = Worth it! Telekinesis is just super fun = Worth it! Mass Paralysis turns you into the tenth Divine = So fucking worth it! Alteration Perks such as Magic Resistance are generally good = Worth it!

(yeah, responding a comment from 4 years ago, who cares?) I never use mass paralysis because if affects followers even with the black book that makes so you can't hurt your followers in combat. I don't want to turn my boy Stenvar into a vegetable 😢

You can get a huge magika cost reduction using robes and enchanted gear, which makes the armor boost nice, as I'm not sure if armor can be enchanted that well. I'm talking like 100% magika reduction.
@NobodyDungeons3 жыл бұрын
The answer is yes get alteration perks because it is stupid easy to level up, and its perks will almost always be useful because what build in skyrim can't use 30% extra magic resistance, and unless your playing a conjuration mage 30% spell absorption is going to be useful to. Also, if you use shouts at all stability will be useful for those to making elemental fury, and slow time last 50% longer.
@SpaceAngelMewtwo7 жыл бұрын
Ever considered doing these videos for Ordinator, PerMa, or SkyRe? Because those trees make Alteration perks hella worth it. I always use the Mage Armor spells when playing PerMa since the perks will provide armor rating benefits so long as you are not wearing an armor piece in your chest slot, which lets you benefit from those perks and wear some armor at the same time. That and PerMa also has a perk in the Alteration tree to make all spells that are cast with two hands be cast with only one while retaining full movement, which can make the master spells worth it (Especially Lightning Storm, holy fuck), the Master perk is required for the powerful Focus perks as well as the perk that lets you take a second Focus perk, and there is just a wide variety of new and interesting spells added to the Alteration tree by a lot of mods that can benefit from these perks, such as spells from Apocalypse or Forgotten Magic.

I usually use alteration when I don't want to put a shit ton of points into smithing
@noahneukom3 ай бұрын
i really like alteration but i think when it comes to perks it has two major flaws: mage armor and dual casting. because dualcasting only improves the duration and not the armor rating that the flesh spells provide. and mage armor is useless as soon as you wear one piece of armor. because if you think about it if you have all three ranks ebonyflesh gives you 300 armor. which is just a bit more than half the cap. since i‘m roleplaying a character that doesn’t use smithing i wanted to use alteration to boost my physical defense. but since i‘m wearing armor as well the max armor boost i get is 100 which is pretty mediocre in my opinion. i understand that if they had done it like i say then dual casting ebonyflesh would give 660 armor so way beyond the cap. then the only benefit of using dragonhide is that it actually can be stacked with armor. but the master spells are bad anyway so i don‘t think anyone would be upset.
@MR_Nickanator6 жыл бұрын

No mention of how Stability affects both Quick Reflexes from the Block tree and the Slow Time Shout? You have half-again as much time to dodge when using Quick Reflexes and between an Amulet of Talos, Blessing of Talos, and lvl 3 Dragon Aspect Shout, using a lvl 3 Slow Time Shout you only have to wait like five seconds before you can use Slow Time again when the effect ends.
@danieltaylor41854 жыл бұрын
Stability has one very practical use and that is the fact that it increases the duration of the Slow Time shout which just makes you feel like a living god while it's active, and I love it. Too bad late-game magicka in general is very underpowered.

I found that with the Atronach perk when I wanted to conjurer something the spell would cancel and I would absorb it 30% of the time and as a conjurer it would get annoying when being overwhelmed. For me it's not a good perk, I just stick with Magic Resistance perks.
@dialaskisel59297 жыл бұрын
Still think it's silly to ignore conjuration: Absorb magic makes it harder to raise your fancy atronachs and Dremora Lords. Which, as a mage, I've always found incredibly useful. Mage armor just makes me sad. Early game, it's not too bad, but later on Ebonyflesh doesn't scale or anything, meaning it quickly falls behind the damage curve. It only has something like 300 armor with mage armor and all, it doesn't hold up. I guess it's enough not to be killed by stray arrows (sometimes), but you are still forced to rely on summoned creatures to tank for you.

try the Ordinator Perk mod, it changes all the skill perks and you can make some crazy powerful mages that can summon armies of skeletons/zombies/daedra buffed by your own power, alteration perks make you damn near un-damageable and destruction perks help you blast through your enemies pesky elemental resistances
