It probably is Opium, but I think the name Skooma is inspired by one of the oldest known drugs Soma which was a milk-like drink made from hallucinogenic mushrooms through a process similar to making Almond milk or Horchata.

EJ's vodka trick of the Kitchen! --- Run your preferred vodka through a brita (or similar) filter a few times prior to trying the recipe. This will improve the quality of the vodka and thus make it not taste like something you'd pour on a wound after a battle. (Good quality vodka has no real 'taste' to it, or subtle hints of taste). After this is done, proceed as normal. This will vastly improve the taste of the drink, allowing you to appreciate the sweetness of it without it just tasting like sugar and alcohol (anyone who has added sugar to cheap alcohol knows how awful it can taste). Furthermore, after straining the Skooma into the bottle, wrap a damp paper towel around the bottle and place in the freezer for about 30 minutes or so. This will chill it quickly, allowing you to taste what you've been stewing for 3 weeks. If not drinking right away, ditch the paper towel and place the bottle in the freezer. Since you still have a high alcohol content, the skooma won't freeze and you won't have to dilute the drink with ice. --- (EJ's disclaimer: Don't drink Skooma before or during the operation of heavy machinery. Don't drink Skooma if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Do not combine Skooma with any medications.)

I think with this recipe, it might be better to get the mix the syrup and water together THEN heat up to get a better consistency on the simple syrup. The boiling movement in the water helps aid with getting the sugar totally dissolved. I'd probably throw in the other ingredients when heating up the syrup to get a better infusion of flavor from the apricots, cardamom and vanilla.

With the apricot infused vodka: I would shake with ice, strain off into the glass, add a dash of bitters. The ice will cool but also slightly dilute the drink. Straining it means you can down it without ice in the way. The bitters would both round the flavor and hide the vodka a little. For a cocktail either the standby orange juice and spritz (or lemon lime soda), or even a shot of cream and peach schnapps...
