@audio guru Yuvraj Singh, Sehwag, Harbhajan etc will strongly disagree with you. And the way Ganguly made his comeback in South Africa after getting dropped is still a inspiration for many. Not just India...even overseas captains like Waugh, Inzamam-ul-Haq etc told on multiple occasions how Ganguly transformed the team's attitude...earlier in 90s it was a very timid approach and India hardly won overseas. India needed a strong leader like Ganguly to recover from match fixing scandals. He produced results and got viewers trust back in Indian cricket. Ganguly and Dhoni are the best captains India ever had. And Ganguly being a natural leader is doing a great job as BCCI President now.

Very interesting discussion, particularly incisive comments as usual from Nasser, who has become my favourite commentator on the game (closely followed by Athers). And of course the subject matter was highly pertinent to KP and his premature sacking from the England team. It was a decision made for all the wrong reasons. Even those of us on the outside recognised that KP could be difficult and arrogant and sometimes a plain jack-ass. But it will also very clear from the start that he practiced very hard, and not only that, but thought deeply and analytically about the game. The fact that he could look so spontaneous with a bat in his hand almost belied the amount of preparation which had gone into each innings. And he was a great player for England, even greater than his stats, impressive as they are. I once worked out that most good test players would play an extraordinary innings - a truly match or series-changing score, against the run of play, against the run of conditions, about two or three times in their entire career. KP managed about a dozen of these type of innings in his international career. To do that requires a certain type of personality, perhaps not one that will always be amenable or orthodox. But if such a player is always giving themselves the best chance of commitment, and are not ill-disciplined or getting drunk every night, then just accept them as they are. I have never got the impression that KP was genuinely malicious, and there was always an obvious warmth and sensitivity to his personality. Michael Vaughan and Duncan Fletcher, both good player psychologists, handled him well. After that, it was a bit downhill. Andy Flower, for all his mental toughness and brilliance as a deeply analytical cricketer, wanted to create a team of Andy Flowers, and while this worked well up to a point, he also did not know when to stand back and loosen the reigns a bit. Many of us were absolutely furious when KP was lost to the game, because he offended the likes of a few mediocre MCC men in blazers. And when we had to suffer another year of Peter Moores, a man who never quite understood the psychology of international cricket and cricketers, just in order to guarantee KP's exclusion. It's not just many fans were denied a few more years of those tremendously exciting, game-turning innings. It was the fact that future batsmen coming into the England side were denied a chance of playing alongside and learning something about approach and preparation methods from one of the greats of the game. The hole which KP left has never been filled. I get the impression that things have improved a bit. Ben Stokes also strikes me as a slightly complicated man, and some of his off-field antics might have been far more harshly dealt with by past regimes. But he has been brought into the fold by a broader-minded coach and captain, and extra responsibility has suited him well and allowed him to mature in the way he has.

KP’s contributions to these segments during the course of the India tour have been very revealing - especially this one: he is always honest, open and passionate but he constantly makes EVERYTHING about himself. Plus he never adds the caveat “In my opinion” or “From my perspective”; it’s all “I know this”. That single-mindedness and high self-regard obviously helped him to become the great batter he was, but it also made him a poor captain and, ultimately, a malignant presence in the dressing room. Sure, the England hierarchy made some big mistakes managing him, but that steadfast refusal to accept any blame himself played a big part too. Nobody came out of that situation covered in glory.

This discussing basically means you need someone who can take a backseat at the helm. This is where Virat Kohli at times goes wrong and Rohit Sharma gets ahead of him in captaincy.

I don’t think it’s just about taking a backseat. Besides, the stuff around Kohli’s captaincy is something I don’t get. Ashwin, who is a pretty feisty character himself says he loves playing under Virat the most. Even more than Dhoni. No one in the team ever has an issue with Virat. Rohit has only captained in the ipl, with all due respect. Kohli’s record as captain is one of the best ever, and far and above any Indian captain, even Dhoni. He has won test series in Aus, competed everywhere else, whitewashed NZ in NZ, Aus in Aus in t20s and beaten SA 5-1 in their home in ODIs. His ODI record is 2nd only to Pointing and his test record is 2nd only to Waugh, who had probably the team of the century around them. So I can never get how Rohit sharma is a better captain then Virat? What we do is “trial by camera”. We see Virat’s expressiveness on the field and feel like he must be scolding his players in the dressing room. But if you actually get players’ perspective, you would know he’s just as chilled out as anyone. On the field, he is like a baby. Why should he change that? Players sometimes need captains who back them verbally or tell them what needs to be done, not just stay mum when things don’t go their way.

Dhoni is one of the greatest captain ever, no doubt. But he captained India in 5-6 t20 wc and won one of those, he captained 2 50 over wc and won one of those. Let kohli captain that many, then judge. Back then, there were Asia cups every year. And no offence to him, but he wasn’t a great test player. Under Kohli, India has done so many good things in tests. You can see how instrumental he has been in increasing fitness levels of the players. And I don’t think India losing 2017 champions trophy or 2019 wc, was because of Kohli’s captaincy. India played amazingly well throughout those tournaments and just messed up in one game. We just like to nitpick. And Honestly, who cares about rcb? IPL is sort of a happy celebratory tournament where you enjoy the talent on show. I think any true fan of cricket would much rather see India win tests abroad then watch ipl and crib about captaincy. This is no way of saying Rohit isn’t a great captain. It’s just that why do we need to compare two people? Yes, if Ind was playing horribly, then kohli should have been sacked as captain. But they play wonderfully well at most times. They beat most teams. You can’t say someone is a bad captain because they lost one game. And I don’t think resources are getting wasted. There are tremendous amount of talent coming through. India is finally competing in tests abroad. And India is a serious contender for T20 WC this year. We never realise that Kohli has not captained Ind in many multilateral tournaments. Captaining in one WC, and going to semies, and having bad luck like India had, when the match shifted to next day and the conditions changed drastically, doesn’t result into Kohli’s terrible captaincy.

When I was growing up - I always remember people like Gower, Gilchrist, Moin Khan, Michael Slater, Mark Waugh, people who could take the game away from you in 1-2 sessions. On the bowling front - Shane Warne, Murali, Devon Malcolm, Ambrose, Walsh, Wasim, Waqar, Shane Bond - these people need to be left to play their game, and have the coach there to help them if somethig goes wrong, or when they want to build on what's made them successful. Unfortunately, the English style of management, values, ethics, often don't have the moral courage to do this. Look at English football. Glenn Hoddle was probably the most naturally gifted English player of the 1980s. Michel Platini used to say he'd have been capped 150 times if he'd been born French. However, he only ended up with 53 caps, and was usually played out of position. Bryan Robson, or 'Captain Marvel' as he was called - was usually favoured due to work ethic. Work ethic doesn't win tournaments. Vision, and technical ability does.

Some times you need to change your tactics when you are chasing total to win series....1st 10 overs careful with bat not to loose wickets...then always keep one batsman at the end...changing batting order...like Sam Curran should have sent as soon as first two wickets fell....

About the whole Kevin Peterson fiasco by ECB, them and Eng captain should have learnt a thing or two from Captains like Ganguly /Dhoni who had different characters in their team. They never came to the media to crib about that. Kevin is England's best all format player. You dont let go of such once-in-a-time talents for petty issues.

Stay cool above all else. Realize that someone has to lead, you are in the chair so, so like everything else you do, you might as well do it the best you can. If you were really crap it is highly unlikely that you would have found yourself in a leadership position in the first place, so take confidence from that fact. This is why one would be well-advised not to overly strive for a position of leadership, as this is one of the ways you find yourself to be essentially incompetent, as well as disliked and disrespected, which is not a good way to start. More to the point. Managing difficult or perceived to be difficult players should not be too difficult for a good leader by definition. You judge every situation and character as they come, and react accordingly. Some kids need shouting at, but most simply need is your attention. Listen carefully to them and give them what they want if at all possible. If they then F up, they will only have themselves to blame, and the selectors or LIFE will drop them anyway. If they are disturbing other players then carefully listen to their concerns and deal with them in a similar manner. Know that you are dealing with grown-up children as men invariably are most especially when playing games together. 22 players = 22 big highly childish egos even during a so-called friendly match on a Sunday afternoon, as any umpire or club captain will tell you.

I think about the next generation of our country who have already become crazy for cricket at such a high level... In the foriegn channel many subscribers or viewers are from India....Just Unlucky things for our Country😞😞😞
