...and it's still making him money to this day. Noddy Holder claims in interviews that his family celebrate Christmas twice every year in his house: once at the end of December like everyone else, and once more in late April/early May when the PRS cheque arrives with his royalties from the continued sales of "Merry Christmas Everybody".

I remember going to Monsters of Rock in 1981 when Slade were on the bill. People were generally not that happy about it - all a bit too "glam" for us hardcore rock fans. At least, that's what we thought until they came on stage - these guys could rock with the best of them!

@@josephvalenzuela311 I haven't a clue if you mean 1970 or the 70's, if the latter then it has to be Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody. I know a lot of the early 70's band, but more on the rock side. Beatles, Stones. led zeppelin, the Who, Black Shabbath among others. started getting into music more around the glam rock stage, but watching Tops of the pops heard a lot of stuff and just left school when punk started, great times, so my youth was around 77-to mid 80's, so is better memories for me that period then earlier.

Please understand Quiet Riot had nothing to do with Slade having success in the 80s. They headlined Reading Festival after Ozzy fell ill, they were still selling albums late 70s into the 80s. Slade were the biggest selling band in the UK in the 1970's but somehow were/are never quite fashionable. Maybe it was the deliberate mis-spellings, maybe the over the top embrace of glam fashion, maybe because they spoke with Wolverhampton accents. They toured extensively in the US but never broke the charts there. But, you know, they were just great, good time rock and rollers!

Remember the UK was a very class-divided society then (and most certainly still is). Slade is a band deriving from the poorer side of society. That's the first point you got to be aware of. The second one is that glam fashion was excentric and taking art to a popular level, and created a group identity that vanished when it got exploited by teenage bopper talent scouts. Watch Kenny (the band, not the Irish singer), Stephenson's Rocket, the Wombles and the Bay City Rollers and you know what I'm talking about. Gary Glitter, Suzi Quatro, Slade and (The) Sweet were taking glam to teen's level when Marc Bolan gradually faded from people's attention when his musical and textual style became too alienated. The third point is that the compositions of Slade didn't attract intellectuals. While the Beatles did manage to offer anyone a piece of tasteful delights, Slade remained a raw rock band, offering teenybop songs as well as bluesy material. Cockney Rebel was a band that tried to save the artful side of glam. However, it soon became Steve Harley's solo effort. Slade too wanted to get artful, and loved by Americans, and diverted from their teeny glam sound and fashion during 1974, so other glam artists took over Slade's top popularity position. Slade managed to get popular again in the 80s, which is quite astonishing.

LOVE Slade - I didn't believe it when this thumbnail came up. You hit directly on the essence of Slade - Loud, Fun, High-Energy Party Rock. I wore out two copies of "Slayed?" on 8-Track back in the day; I got the remastered CD last year and it sounds even better. Now my neighbors know Slade, and people in other cars on the freeway too. Great reaction, please do more !

Hi there 50 something Brit here, music from my childhood, loved the whole glam rock scene. Slade, The Sweet, Marc Bolan, Wizard, Suzy Quatro, and another band just having a really good time on stage around the same time was Mud, loved Tiger feet, I still know the dance to that one x

Welcome to the world of Glam Rock. I had the pleasure of seeing them in 1972 in Leeds UK when they were at their peak. Thin Lizzy & Suzi Quatro were their supporting acts at the time.

Slade actually has one of the most played and famous Xmas song's in history,it came out in the 70's you should look that up,and I'm not sure what the group members are doing now although the lead singer Noddy Holder has acted in his later years on TV here in the UK
