The last boss (Spirit of Vroll) can be defeated faster with the charging attack before it releases the orbs, then continue attacking him with the regular sword to accumulate blue mana special, then when he goes at the middle of the screen to release the giant orb, crouch and use the super mana special for huge damage. Repeat the pattern.

There are so many half-hearted retro style platformers out there when I see any attempt at the genere I generally get glazed over with boredom or annoyance as a knee-jerk reaction. I am genuinely impressed, drawn in and entertained by the graphics and gameplay. Exceptionally well executed.

Well, the game is cool, but I do feel the bosses here are kinda cheesy, with only two attacks in general and good players able to just kill half the bosses by reflecting their extremely exploitable projectiles backwards. Ice Beast and Lupus Rex battles were so painful because of that. The final form of the final boss was also really boring, imo.

There were many 2D slashers in a few recent years. But I guess what sparked it all was success of Salt and Sanctuary, a "Dark Souls 2D" game that doesn't even try to pretend it's something else. This one is a bit more conventional, more like older 2D slashers.

@@Annokh Yeah, neither this game nor Blasphemous have stamina, for one thing. S & S does, and same goes for Death's Gambit and some lesser-known games like Unworthy and Gloom. There were also Shrouded in Sanity and DarkMaus if you are counting them (since they are top-down, and not platformers.)

Very Impressive! Excellent technique! I would only like to add that combining a counter-strike with a follow-up charge attack works wonders on many creatures, including some bosses (Hogre, for example). And, may i suggest as a worthy alternative using mana blast attack on the Spirit-Vroll instead of a charged shot, it kills him much faster. Slain Rules!

@@ciggsrotes6225 It's actually interesting whether Valfaris is the sequel or prequel. I mean, you go through the whole Valfaris hunting Vroll, only to discover he left long ago. Yet, in this game, you actually defeat Vroll. So, perhaps, it was the same Vroll in both games, and he travelled to this game's world from Valfaris (long before Therion arrived there) and conquered it, only to eventually get killed by Bathoryn? Though, it then becomes really strange how Bathoryn made it back to Valfaris, and into the hands of Furrok.

There's nothing wrong with the game, the controls are very responsive and the difficulty is fair, with plenty of checkpoints even between the phases of the last boss. This game got a lot of buzz because they updated it a few months after release improving it massively and adding the "Back from Hell" bit to the title, so you must have read something from before that happened.

That ending was so bullshit! Though, most of the "dark platformer" games have pretty bad endings. Hollow Knight is thankfully an exception. Ironically, Gloom, which is a freaking roguelike, managed far superior endings than basically any other "Soulsborne platformer". Too bad its actual gameplay is lacking.
