To the person who said, "Dry brushing and using contrast paints isn’t real painting," I’d like to say that, as a dad, I just don’t have the luxury of time I used to have for painting and dedicating myself to all those fine details and edge highlights. There was a time when I could spend 20 hours on a single mini, but that’s just not possible anymore. Speedpaints have given me my hobby back. Even if I’m aiming more for a tabletop-ready finish these days, I still enjoy going all out on some pieces to make them special. I was close to sell everything when I found Slapchop and Speedpaints, so, IT IS PAINTING!

Grisaille underpainting is a very old painting technique where the artist uses neutral colors (grisaille is French for 'grayness') to paint the picture and ensure the contrast levels are where they want them, and then thinned transparent paints are used to color it in. We've simply adapted it to mini painting.

As a professional painter, i use almost the same technique for basic painting, and it's just fine. painting is painting, rembrand is not picasso, both are greaat painters, just using different techniques! I'm also a long time viewer of your channel, and some of your videos really inspired me, cause I'm also a lazy painter. The point is to have painted minis, most of people doesn't want/need to have golden demon like painted minis, just painted minis are great ! Keep going ! Your videos are great !

haters gonna hate. I come from traditional painting and drawing and its the same there. There are always people complaining or telling you "drawing on a tablet isnt real art" "drawing comics isnt art" etc etc. Cant be bothered by those negative minds. In the end art is highly subjective. To me art is everywhere...even cooking can be art imho. Discussing what painting is and what not...thats not the point. Finding creative ways to bring life to plastic models, using different mediums and approaches...thats something real beautiful and fun to me. Not being close-minded and open to experiment. And I love watching channels like yours where you can learn and see how other people think of new ideas and ways to paint models. And for many people its not just a single model they want to paint for showcasing, I'd guess most people here paint for their games...so thinking of ways to speed up the process but getting high quality results is key to me. Using contrast/speedpaints is a super-nice tool, because I for myself dont like basecoating that much. So i can skip this completely with those paints, bring color variation with some nice quick airbrush underpaints and then go crazy with what I like the most...which is detail work, glazing, effects, a bit of edge highlighting etc. Sorry for the wall of text. :D

Thanks so much! I don’t usually comment on videos, but this one really helped me realize that I wasn’t using my speed paints incorrectly or going crazy. For about two years, I’ve been using what you call the "Chop on Chop method." I’d painted some expensive minis I bought, but they ended up way too dark because the speed paints I used were in darker tones. As a result, I lost a lot of the highlights and details I’d worked hard to bring out. I freaked out, especially since I had spent so much time on the Slap Chop and undercoating process to really get those highlights and contrasts. I felt stuck with only two options: stripping the paint or dry brushing over it again, which sounded risky/crazy at the time (because the "rule" of the paints was that they work with one coat). But I decided to try it, and not only did it save my work, but the results ended up looking fantastic. Thanks again for the guidance!

Printing your minis is frowned upon by elitists (GW fan(atic)s especially), collecting bootleg figures is frowned upon (I just want a pretty figurine of my favorite fictional character, and don't want to break the bank paying for an overpriced product, just cause it's "original" or licensed, and this is why I love McFarlane products), using AI to boost your products (ok, this is a grey area, but still), and so on.

I do something similar and started out doing it like this but but these days I tend to do my base coating with regular acrylics before ‘slapchopping’ over it with thinned Speedpaints like this. You get a similar effect of highlights and shadows but more even blocks of colour, no coffee staining etc.

Speed paints see some occasional use on my end, and even though the majority of my painting is still straight up acrylic, I'm not going to crack on others for using them. I've learned they have a place in my painting repertoire and even though I don't fancy giving GW my money, Army Painter's Speedpaints 2.0 will do me just fine. Besides, you do some really good work with them, Don, so I can't say anything bad anyway.

Definitely painting. Have you tried this method on a mid-value primer with a warm or cool tone like Vallejo skeleton bone or desert tan, instead of a black primer? If you have, could you make a video of the results?

I’ve tried just warm-ish grey priner, then white drybrushing. The result is okay. But I had to apply more washes on the crevices to build more contrast. 😊

Anyone who says using speed paints isn't painting probably doesn't use them. People watch pro painters on KZbin and think it looks easy. But using speed paints is a skill itself. I use contrast paints and while my army looks good my skills aren't at your level yet. I am getting a set of speed paints because of your videos so I can see how they work for me. I had a question on how you do the blending to create a sort of gradient (like you did for the back with blue-green and tentacles with pink-flesh). Toughest part following your technique, which I love and want to learn, is to get a go from black to 'gray' and then up it to white, without making it look like I just painted white directly on the mini. Your videos gave me courage to spend 60 Euros on 32mm 3d prints from internet. So both a handshake from me and middle finger from my wallet. I hope to upgrade from 32mm scale miniatures to larger scale. But once you start to look at the prices, it's suddenly seems cheaper to get your own printer vs. just the accumulating postage expenses if I'd even order a new mini once a month.

What a weird take. To be completely honest, I don't use Speedpaints, but thats because I've just never been able to get them to look right to me, so I just kind of gave up on using them. I just use colors a few shades darker than what I want to work up to, layering up those highlights, while leaving the shaded areas the color of the basecoat. What I love about that method is you dont have to use a lot of washes, if at all. But to say what method of painting is, or is not painting is just weird to me. One thing I love about this hobby is that in the short time I've been into it, I've never really noticed a lot of gatekeeping, and it would really be cool if it could stay that way. Just keep doing what you're doing man. I learned proper wet blending technique from you, which I hated before. Haha.

I find this elitist type of people funny. To them, painting is what only guys like Giraldez or Calvo are doing. You know, those guys that had decades of practice and like to be fiddling an gimmicky with their processes, because they are painting for a living or for competitions, not just for fun or relaxation. I think that at some point they became mechanical, and don't even realize it. To the elitist, if you're not struggling for 100+ hours, it's not "painting", or "art". It is painting just not good painting. This technique was literally designed for people who don't enjoy painting. So they can get models on the table as fast as possible, and that looks okay-ish. Now, there's nothing wrong with doing this. But some people get an ego after learning to slapchop and think they're great painters. They are not. Also people are afraid to put in the work to learn other ways of painting and will die defending this one easy technique they can do. Hidden behind a mountain of excuses.

All that matters is the result. If the result is good it’s good painting. You can do a shit job using ‘traditional’ layering methods or a good job using this method. Or vice versa. It’s always worth practicing all techniques, but you can do all of those methods on top of a base coat like this. They’re not mutually exclusive.

At the end of the day one look at the model will reveal all you need to know. If it looks great it’s great, if it looks crap it’s crap. If someone got there using one method or another it’s irrelevant. You can push underpainted styles beyond basic ‘slapchop’ with a good understanding of the mediums you’re using and combining it with other techniques, as with this video, but like anything it requires practice and knowledge just like any approach. It’s not easy making it look genuinely good, beyond just tabletop acceptable. At some point it actually becomes ‘easier’ to use more traditional techniques to achieve good results.

@iantellam9970 ok whatever my guy. I'm just saying I don't like the slapchop community. They've become lazy and attached to this crutch/ training wheels that they refuse to take off and call themselves awesome painters. You're just throwing out generic obvious arguments like "they're not mutually exclusive or anyone can be annoying," so I'm done talking to you. Yes, you can improve upon a paint job after you slapchop, but if you're going to do that, you might as well not slapchop, IMO. If you're gonna put in the work starting from a slapchop foundation, it is a bit of a detriment, IMO. But do whatever you want. I'm done with this pointless discussion. If you wanna get better, stop slapchoping everything.

@ You’re right it’s not really slapchop if you’re doing other things - and that’s the point of something like this - developing beyond slapchop. I haven’t noticed anyone calling themselves ‘awesome’ for just doing it that way, just satisfied with their own results and good for them - it’s mainly seen a quick way to get minis on the table. Neither have i ever identified a ‘slapchop community’. Mostly just a rash of clickbaity videos. But it’s not any worse than any other speed painting technique and skills can be developed just as easily as starting from the GW approach or whatever you want. It’s objectively no easier than the traditional layer-wash-highlight really, which is still where most beginners still start and stay. Back when I started painting in the 90s it was the only way i knew how, as the internet wasn’t a thing and all I had was White Dwarfs to go by. It’s much better now that there’re a host of processes and techniques people can draw from now and combining and experimenting with a variety of techniques is the best way to learn and improve.

If anything your technique takes more skill, to get higher highlights you need a bright background, kinda like watercolor painting. You can't just mix white into your highlights. Very cool
