BlackBerry Leap review

BlackBerry is well-known for making devices with physical keyboards which inspire productivity. So, exactly why it's still making all-touch devices is a little intriguing, to say the least. With the Leap, the manufacturer is trying to appeal to smartphone buyers in the mid/low end of the market. But has it succeeded? Cam reviews the Leap and gives his thoughts of this smartphone.

+sheek1982 You are right! I just switched to the Leap (coming from the Z10 with higher resolution) - no complaints! Sure there are lots of devices with higher resolution screens, but to me the one from the Leap looks crisp with good colors and good contrast! Can't complain about it!

Cam, to focus you need to tap+hold the screen until a padlock icon appears. Then you can freely move the phone without losing focus. Using the 3 second timer countdown allows you to not have to tap (which moves or shakes the phone) in order to take the snapshot.

By my humble opinion this is the best phone I've ever had: incredible battery life, nice camera even in low light and surprising pics with hdr, operating system is the top at the moment thanks to the unreachable blackberry Hub. It's really a super phone.

You're being unfair to this phone because you're reviewing it from the standpoint of comparing it with all the other devices out there rather than from the standpoint of what makes it a strong device. I like that the diaplay is not higher end. It is perfectly fine for users who places productivity as the chief priority and entertainment as a distraction only. A higher end processor and display would kill the battery quicker. I'd rather have the longer battery life. It would also increase the price. I'd rather have the price kept where it is. It's as if you.brought a truck and then compared it to a sports car and wishing it were as fast or as pretty as the sports car rather than appreciating it's utility as a truck. The Blackberry operating system is very efficient and it's not bloated like the others out there. It doesn't need higher specs to do what it does best, which is functioning as a well tuned and logical communication device. Once you've used it as your daily driver you will appreciate how it is superior to the iPhone and the Android OS for its core function. Blackberries are not just great because of the keyboard, but for the logical way the messaging, phone, and email all tie in so well. This Blackberry is for those who understands this but also wants a longer screen in order to view videos in a larger size than they can with the classic and psssport square screen. For those who's priority is the gaming or entertaiment, then obviously this is not the right phone for them.

Charles Le I don't think I'm being unfair, in fact, I'm pretty sure I agree with almost everything you say. But my job is to review products which involves critiquing individual parts of the phone which I feel are most important to offering a good experience. Other manufacturers have proven you can put better components in without making it too expensive.

Cam Bunton You're right about other manufactures being able to put better components in without making it too expensive. But the flagship Blackberry devices are much less expensive that the flagships of other manufacture, and I would argue that the Blackberries do many thing better than the flagships of other manufactures even though they cost way less. My bigger point was that Blackberries don't need better components that what they already have. It's good enough. Other phones may have better specs for the same price, but they are not as efficient. With my Blackberry, I only need to look at one inbox to see all my messages from text, various emails, Facebook, Twitter, Linkin, etc. Just one inbox! With my iPhone and my Samsung Note, I have to constantly switch in and out of a dozen apps to up with everything. Others may have better specs but their inefficient OS is their downfall. The Blackberry is able to do the same thing in a much more efficient manner, and thus don't require the higher specs. Arguably, because of the lower specs, combined with it's efficient hardware, it's able to last much longer on a single charge, and that's something that can't be underestimated. Here's an analogy. Imagine your basic lcd calculator from the early 80's that you can buy for $10. It will compute whatever problems you can thrown at it in a blink of an eye, and it will run forever on a set of batteries and the little solar cell. Very efficient! Now, modernize it by throwing quad core processor, 3 gb of ram, 1400 pixel Amoded display and what not, and then jack the price up to $200. It's prettier, has a bigger screen, and you can play some really cool games on it, and you will have to charge it every few days because the hardware demands it. Is it worth it? I'm exaggerating the different obviously, but it's just to make a point. The Blackberry, like the LCD calculator, excels at what it does best at it's core, which is to be a excellent phone and an excellent messaging device, and it manages to do it very well at a much less price of it's competitors. It's screen is not as pretty and it won't play the latest games, but I don't care, especially if I have to sacrifice my long battery life for the sake of it.

Charles Le cannot agree more ! Integrated Calender App , File Manager , HUB , Remember App , Password Keeper , BBM , Clock , Calculator , Blackberry Blend , Storymaker App , Video and Picture App, App stores are all integrated in the BB10 OS this is so crucial vs the the rest of the App Launcher phones . My buddies S5 after an OS update, the update screwed up its 3rd party file manager app. He now would rarely update his OS and currently uses 3 file manager apps on top of BOX and Dropbox ( he is trying out a RED Passport AWSP ! ) . iOS ...well thats another OS update mess. Hey there is a saying from BB users " I live in the HUB " because when I am in the HUB the multi taking is beyond the rest ..and you can take that to the bank. Just bought my 12 year old son a LEAP and he absolutely loves it . He has his iTouch , iPad , Samsung tablet to keep his fun stuff going but even he finds himself more productive on the LEAP. yup a lot was missing on this video. The LEAP is a great business productive secured Fleet phone for sure.

After watching the incredible BlackBerry India Blog review I just ordered this in gray for $144 at jet.com. Never used BlackBerry but was blown away by their review. I like the Conservative Gray and I find I like older displays better because the new displays outside are useless. I have a Galaxy but hate android and ios seems boring. Windows is useless but my 1020 takes great shots. I think a lot of people would be interested in BlackBerry if they saw India blog review. Never presume what people want.

The leap is targeted for enterprise or for businesses with a larger volume requirement for a secure reliable handset. Productivity, slick interface and most importantly cost effectiveness with excellent battery life. I do not think it just about Blackberry fans with this phone at all. Even the access panel on the side for removing the sim card is a benefit so you can just pop it out and into your personal phone easily if you need to that is. It really is a well thought out productive work tool.

The price of the Leap has been dropped to $199 in the US and £145 in the UK on the BlackBerry online stores in a "back to school" promotion. This should answer your concern about the initial pricing. This is the time to get the device for those who were holding out.

Loving Blackberry. But can't help but think your review may be spot on. The price point isn't too expensive but comparatively, there are better Android phones out there, cheaper, with better specs, camera, display, etc. But Blackberry is Blackberry. Their OS, The Hub, and the security they offer is unique and can not be found in other operating systems, hence the price (from all the security research and infrastructure and such). This is a strength of Blackberry. That said, would it be possible that you guys compare such security features of phones with Blackberry and other manufacturers? It does seem unfair when other advantages of a phone are used in their favour, when instead, I've never seen a reviewer review the security aspects of a phone, when that is Blackberry's strengths. It may actually need more digging into with specialists from the security sector to get this done, and I'd understand the challenges that come with such a request. But I believe such unique works could give Phonedog and especially you, Mr. Bunton, a more respectable standing against other reviewers, reviewing just the standard features of a phone. *Keep up the good work, Cam, always love your work! :) But I noticed, why don't you show your face in this video? ;) *Shaved? :D

Ok so next time you want to demonstrate a phone's performance in the UI, don't spend time swiping left and right, left and right. Launch programs. Switch between programs. For example, show how the phone boots, how long it takes to open the dialer. Show how long it takes to open facebook and how many apps it can handle running at the same time before it shuts them down. Overall a bad review. Just bad. No mention of bugs, annoyances, differences. All I remember from the review is that someone plays the guitar and that someone was swiping left and right in the programs list.

I love your reviews Cam. They always seem for the most part unbiased. However, like most reviewers when it comes to the iphone everyone turns a blind eye to the spec race that everyone else gets thrown into. It is 2015 like you say yet, the iphone 6 being a flagship device is powered by1Gig of ram, less than 2,000mah battery, dual core cpu and 8mp camera and also doesnt have a 1080p display. Now i cannot help but see the double standards here... The leap runs just as effciently as the iphone on moderate specs because it doenst need much more... but Blackberry gets called out for being cheap whilst Apple gets praised? The leap being a mid tier smartphone has arguably the same specs as the High end iphone 6 and comes in at 1/3 the price. Blackberry just doesnt attach catchy names to specs: A9 processor, isight camera, retina display... but at the end of the day they are the same thing. Blackberry values their productivity and security, Apple values their ecosystem. Blackberry's security is embedded from hardware to software so when they price their phones the way they do is it not because they understand the value of their product? you cannot compare apples to oranges in this case. android phones will always be cheaper than Blackberry even when they come with the same specs.

CraigDIGz I mention specs because they matter to our viewers. But they rarely have any impact on how I form my opinion on the experience of using the device. For instance - I said the screen has great qualities, but, at times you can tell that it's not the sharpest, giving specific examples of the text and rounded app icon corners. I still liked using it, I just don't see how it's going to convince regular consumers to switch to BlackBerry.

I really don't envy blackberry's position. They have make a real show stopper to get back in the game, but with very limited resources, funds, and market share they can't afford that gamble. But I feel like if they did, it would pay off big time! Their OS would rum phenomenally on modern high end hardware, and battery sounds like it would be much better than the other big two. Hmm....

Blackberry OS is like Windows Phone, Smooth on low end hardware. But there are literally no apps! Windows phone and blackberry is what iOS used to be before iOS 6.

It isn't disappointing to have a 720p 5" phone, it is disappointing to have a 1080p and higher resolution on phones. The human eye cannot discern the difference between 720p and 1080p at the distance one normally looks at their phone (Which is why Apple uses the Retina resolution.). All the 1080p and higher resolution phones do is raise the price of handsets as well as sap more battery life.

Yet I have heard that people using 10.3.2 say that the camera is actually better after the update, again this is a Z10 upgrade, camera was crap on that device, and how can you compare QNX to the Android software, same with IOS it doesn't need the high end processors to work well, even the Z10 is still smooth for 3 years old. I use sale wise that this runs like a basic Android device, runs many apps, links perfectly to Mac's/Ipad's which other manufacturers don't, and Airdroid is a horrible program btw. and not many low priced devices have such a killer battery life which is almost everyone's first complaint.

I wonder how many people will actually purchase this phone. I don't understand why Blackberry advertises their devices using words related to "Business" and "Productivity" . There's nothing blackberry has to offer that Windows, Apple, and Android can't do or are capable of. If they want to compete against other smartphones why can't they come up with a device that can be comparable to other flagship high end phones? Business and profit gain would benfit Blackberry If they went that route. GUARANTEED if they came up with a high end phone, sales would be much more significant then their previous phones.

Christopher Camarena ***** I bought one and received it over a week ago. I love this device for the price and yes it's productivity. I'm a manager and the blackberry hub handles emails like no other device. Emails come in faster on my Leap than they do on any other phone including my desktop computer. The calendar is awesome especially if you manage multiple calendars. The battery life is awesome as Cam mentioned. Spec wise it's more than enough to handle BB 10. I have instagram, Feedly, Vsco Cam and all run like a champ. I find the build quality very pleasing and functional. No case needed here. Super happy customer. Wish folks were a bit more open minded to trying different operating systems before they write them off. Choice is good.

Stevie Buckets I understand and respect where your coming from on that end. I was a blackberry user. I had the bold 9900 the Q10 and Z10. So I have experience with their devices. But from a huge smartphone world perspective, the competition is real. Especially with the younger generation, people do care about specs because they make a difference. Going from camera, display, style, customization, processor speed, and many other fields, are all things that set Blackberry aside from the others. Hardly anyone has a Blackberry nowadays from what I've observed living in Los Angeles. All I was saying is that if they want to be more sucessful with sales,they should up the specs and make a more premium flagship device. It would truely make them more unique. And maybe I would even switch back to Blackberry. In the end it comes down to personal preference of what your are looking for in a phone. But numbers is a huge thing especially in the smartphone market.

Christopher Camarena I'm in Los Angeles. haha, seriously though. But to your point not too many these days is true. I think people need to understand the days of them being the king of the hill are over. They will never be that company anymore and it's tough as people will always judge their moves based on the past. The truth is they are focused on software and enterprise, not so much consumer. So people don't get devices like the Leap because they don't match the everyday consumers expectations. More of a failure on BB's part to market their devices properly. I stand by my point, people are pretty quick to dismiss anything not named Apple or Samsung, and that goes for the majority of tech blogging sites. i.e. the verge and countless others. It's about whatever works best for you, and for a good portion of us it's a Blackberry. No shame in my game.

Stevie Buckets Agreed - BB is all about productivity. Take the BB Blend, for example. It allows users to access all communications (including texting and BBM) on their PC/Mac using a full size keyboard. When you're done, you disconnect and there's no trace of it left on the PC/Mac. Now that's innovation and security. I'm currently using an iPhone 6 since I broke my BB Z10 and I do miss the BB predictive keyboard, hub and Blend among other features. Can't wait for BB to introduce a high end full touchscreen device (and not the upcoming slider phone).

DevilishAbstractions Blend is really powerful. Exactly, everything lives on your phone so it makes things super easy when you are on the go! After my Z10 I had an S5 and a Moto X. Sold them after a few months and went back to BB. Once you use BB10 it's so hard to use anything else. So fluid and just makes sense.

BlackBerry 10 devices execute the most important smartphone functions better than any other devices on the market. phone calls, checking/sending emails, texts, instant messaging, pulling files, web browsing etc. If this is what a user relies on their phone the most for then a BlackBerry 10 device is the best phone for them. Cam seems to ignore that. It is the entertainment aspect that lets them down. Then again how much fun can you really have on a phone? Better to perform your tasks quickly, put your phone down and get on with life in the real world.

Michael Dodd Having a mobile phone is more than just the simple things its all about entertainment we want devices to do almost everything and many do this, There is no way I would pay £230 for a boring mobile phone like the one above its just boring and even if its designed for the professionals amongst us even they would find this a pile of crap, Blackberry is in trouble despite the CEO doing some magic with finances, They need to get on Android and look at the market and better it and I think Blackberry could do this but so far Mr Chen wants to hide what could be a very big name once again

My point is any competent BlackBerry 10 user knows android and iphones perform the most important and basic tasks too slowly. Once a BlackBerry leap user hits the search symbol they have up to 26 virtual keyboard shortcuts that can be performed instantly. From launching apps, to emailing, messaging or calling a particular contact (or no contact in particular) and activating inbox filters. If you need to rely on your phone to perform the above tasks quickly you are wasting your time by owning and ios or android device. Their really isn't any merit in suggesting BlackBerry should switch to android. Most brands running android aren't making a decent profit and BlackBerry 10 devices are getting better at running android apps with each update. My passport has the official google play store on it for example. It runs android apps better than a lot of android devices. The leap wasn't built for games or faffing about. You should really acknowledge that before you judge it.

Michael Dodd speed of a handset is to do with what processor its using and how much RAM the handset has, So anything running Android from people like Samsung, HTC and LG will have handsets that are now more powerful than your laptop, Apple latest and greatest also packs a punch although the RAM could be improved and the battery!, Blackberry handsets work fine I have the Z10 but the battery is poor even with minimal use and what a poor selection of apps oh and the camera is as bad as the firephone maybe worse for that matter, The keyboard is fairly good on a blackberry and I do prefer a physical keyboard this is something of an "ace" card in the Blackberry armour.

I can perform tasks on my BlackBerry 10 devices quicker than ios or android users can return back to the home screen, reset an app then start a fresh. You are confusing specs with performance. Sounds like you are gagging for them to release a flagship all touch device. The Leap is not that device. The slider might be because it will also function as an all touch device. A good thing about the q10 and z10 is users don't need to recharge, they can swap the battery. You can buy genuine BlackBerry battery and charger bundles or you can buy a mugen 3800mah battery (twice the size of the iphone). Get a passport if you like keyboards, it's less than 50% taller than the home button bezel of an iphone and most android devices but performs up to 26 more instant home screen functions. Passport users also have the option of changing screens into rectangular view. Simply just swipe down from the top and select your preferred view. The screen is two 5s's in landscape mode stuck together

+PhoneDog Pathetic review.... You forget to mention the Amazon AppStore, one of the most important features, complain about Camera because you can't take macro shots and White balance which can be adjusted. Not researched properly and biased... pathetic.

im a Z30 user and u said that there arnt any Blacberry users who like full touch devices, so thats wrong. Why on earth are you doing a consumer review as the Leap is for Enterprise, why dont you do a unbiased review of phones or just stop bashing Blackberry for once

You'll be hard-pushed to find anyone else on a non-BlackBerry-centric YT channel who's given the company's phones as much coverage as I have. Most of it is positive. As is most of this review.

the Leap is not a consumer device so why make a review targeted to consumer, just a way to to bash Blackberry. that its not a Samsung S6/Edge or iphone 6. Carriers that are stocking the phone are putting it in the Business Sections.

This blackberry is not worth it, whilst blackberry mail is one of, if not the fastest mail servers in the world, the productivity side of what blackberry stands for is a wash out, there is no native word package, presentation software is weak, also no front facing speakers is a real shame, businesses would not want flagship specs but at least a decent camera incase you want to take photos of a water filter or a piece of wood for construction.What I would like is at least blackberry to partner with Intel to provide their Intel technology so that if you used the camera to measure a fence that had to be copied at another side, then Intel would tell you the height and width measurements of the fence Also blackberry os 11 should be all about production so a HD camera software, filters, word packages and graphics software The next blackberry in my opinion should have an Intel processor maybe a core i3 or a dual core M or the Intel duo core 2 processor That's my opinion anyway :-)

That would be nice. Or maybe even Samsung as has been rumored. Samsung's exynos chipset is the undisputed king at the moment and is very power efficient as well. I too would really like to see more Intel though. Samsung has plenty going on in mobile. Intel needs the bone tossed to them!

Start of the review seemed pretty good. Weird that email and messaging superiority got overlooked. Correlation between battery life, thickness and weight also ignored (unprofessional). Saying 'unless you're an absolute die hard BlackBerry fan' is off topic, unconstructive and uninformative, so is talking about where you put an sd and sim card. Nobody buys a phone based on where you put a sim. Better off talking about things like customizable quick settings, customisable hub settings and virtual keyboard shortcuts. Those are features that separate BlackBerry from the competition. Mentioning who BlackBerry is targetting with this device deserves a mention also (companies who are steering away from byod).
