OH my badddddd they prefer the term ‘indentured servitude’ instead lol No but for real we have so many human rights issues going on currently in that side of the realm.. do you plan on covering it at all? The last Ottoman eunuch, Sadi Yaylımateş died in 1975. This person was born in 1895 in Ethiopia and was abducted by slave-traders at the age of 8 years. He was brought to Alexandria, Egypt and castrated there. According to the very little information that was divulged, the bottom part of his body was placed in hot sand ‘to heal the castration’. He was later taken to the Ottoman Harem on an arduous boat trip. He had a strict training and was later tasked with the care of Ottoman princes. Those who knew him reported that he spoke a beautiful Ottoman courtly Turkish which he must have learned during his training period. He served under the last three sultans: Abdülhamit II, Mehmet V and Vahdettin. Interestingly, he did not stay at the palace but resided in an apartment in the Beşiktaş district of Istanbul and commuted to Yıldız Palace by bike. After the republic was proclaimed he moved to Tuzla township on the Asian side of Istanbul and lived there until his death in 1975. His given name was Sadi and he received the Yaylımateş last name when Turkish citizens were given last names in 1934. He apparently was well-to-do and donated money for a mosque construction in Tuzla and later donated his lands there as well. Two streets in Tuzla were named after him. He was also a beekeeper and sold honey. He is mentioned in the Turkish novel Meyyâle by Hıfzı Topuz, a historical novel about late 19th century Ottoman Court. The last eunuch of the Ottoman court was buried in the Tuzla cemetery. I have personally translated and summarized this information from the article by İskender Özsoy published in the Evrensel online magazine, published on 11/28/2021.

I dont understand why slavery is considered more heinous than colonialism....one is taking someone in far away land n one is someone coming into ur house n making u slave. in the "Great African Scramble" Belgium alone halved the population of Congo...thing about what British, French, Spanish n Portuguese did... if u watched the video properly slaves were treated better in Arab than their European counterparts...n certainly far better than American south. YES in modern day, European n Scandinavian countries r treating workers better, but still those Arab countries r treating people better than USA(may b apart from Qatar), where people has to do a 2nd job to make ends meet....the workers in Arab countries r not brought forcefully n they r paid much more than they would make in their country.

@@Ti2tu this video didn’t say slaves living in Arabia had it better. More like some had it better, like good looking women or voice artists. The rest sounded just as bad. You may be right about colonialism but that was not my topic. And I wasn’t saying it to compare it to another country. Just stating the fact that a form of slavery in Arabian countries survives when they don’t allow immigrants sufficient pay or even their passport in order to flee/return to their countries/families. If you disagree I’m happy to hear your side and educate myself and if you want to compare and study another system I will read that post:)

The Ottoman Empire actually bought a lot of slaves from Sub-Saharan Africa, many of whom ended up as guards or eunuchs working in the Sultan's harem. It is believed this was a precaution to ensure that any concubine that has an affair would end up producing a child with black complexion, therefore they couldn't have been sired by the Sultan. The Chief Black Eunuch was a official post for the head eunuch of the palace.

Nah. The Zanj rebellion was more like Shia messianic movement, in which a Persian Man by the Name of Ali Ibn Muhammad, claimed that he is the Prophecized Mahdi of House of Prophet who will avenge their death from Usurpers(in this case house of Abas) and who is going to cleanse the world from injustice and sin and will empower the weak. Any man who follows him need no work to be saved as heaven is guaranteed. Thus he claimed descendancy from house of prophet via his daughter. He was known as very politically aspirant person, he tried to instigate rebellions but failed and at one time imprisoned but was vouched for by highly regarded poet. He went to southern iraq where he found his lost flock in march lands where zanj worked. He found his oppertunity to rise to the status of Islamic caliph and prince of believers. Thus he started preaching, and used slogans of egalitarian Kharijites" let the fit rule even if he was abyssinian slave" and so many zanjis truly believed he was messianic Mahdi sent from God to restore justice to the world and relievr their conditions at end of time. The Zanj rebellion was so bloody because these blacks felt they are on godly mission to crush their opprressors, joined by the marginalized nomadic bedouins after some major success, the movement began to grow in strength as Mawalis(non-arab muslims) joined as well believing messianic character of Ali ibn Muhammad as the true mahdi. The movement crippled the abbasid caliphate for 20 years before finally being crushed.

The story of Balban , the delhi sultan who was a slave of Sultan Iltutmish is very fascinating. Iltutmish himself was once a slave or of slave dynasty, I'm not so sure. Balban rose in rank step by step by his efficiency and became one of the nobles . Later when the sultan gave his heirship to his daughter, Razia, and the events leading to her death.. in short Balban became sultan by a series of events of fate and his luck. He was such a strong sultan tat , he also fortified india against Mongols before Aladdin kilji. . Story says tat Balban was kept for selling in a slave market in a town( i think Iraq, don't remember now) and a Sufi walked past . He showed respect to the Sufi saint. Please by his behaviour even though in his poor condition, the Sufi told him: ' I'm giving you the keys to India '. Islam is open about slavery, it only modified few existing rules of the pre-islamic Arabia (jahiliyah) but Muhammad never condemned or prohibited slavery, infact the slave trade increased in the Rashidun and Ummayad Caliphate. It's described in numerous Islamic texts such as Hadith and Tafsir: ¶ Punishment for female slaves was very harsh as mandated by Muhammad| Narrated Zaid bin Khalid and Abu Huraira: Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) was asked about an unmarried slave-girl who committed illegal sexual intercourse. They heard him saying, "Flog her, and if she commits illegal sexual intercourse after that, flog her again, and on the third or the fourth offense, Sell her." ~ Sahih al-Bukhari 2232-33 [Book 34, Hadith 179] ¶ Punishment for escaping slaves| The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "If a slave runs away to the land of Shirk (polytheism), it becomes permissible to shed his blood." ~ Sunan an-Nasa'i 4053 [Book 37, Hadith 88] ¶ Selling a slave was preferred over freeing| Narrated Jabir bin`Abdullah: A man amongst us declared his slave would be freed after his death. The Prophet (ﷺ) called for that slave and sold him. The slave died the same year. ~ Sahih al-Bukhari 2534 [Book 49, Hadith 18] ¶ Worth of Black Slaves was lesser: “A slave came and gave his pledge to the Prophet (ﷺ), pledging to emigrate, and the Prophet (ﷺ) did not realize that he was a slave. Then his master came looking for him, and the Prophet (ﷺ) said: ‘Sell him to me,’ and he brought him in exchange for two black slaves. Then after that he did not accept the pledge from anyone until he had asked whether he was a slave.” ~ Sunan Ibn Majah 2869 [Book 24, Hadith 117] ¶ A fertile female slave was expensive: The Prophet (ﷺ) bought Safiyyah for seven slaves; from Dihyah Kalbi' ~ Sunan Ibn Majah 2272 [Book 12, Hadith 136] ¶ It was common practise for Elite men, to own personal slaves for sexual pleasure| Narrated from Anas, that the Messenger of Allah had a female slave with whom he had intercourse, but 'Aishah and Hafsah would not leave him alone until he said that she was forbidden for him. Then Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, revealed: "O Prophet! Why do you forbid for yourself that which Allah has allowed to you.' ~ Sunan an-Nasa'i 3959 [Book 36, Hadith 21] Surah An-Nisa ayet 24 [Qur'an 2:24]. The meaning of "Also forbidden are married women-EXCEPT female captives in your possession." The meaning of of those words (مَا مَلَكَتْ) is elaborated as follows: Tafsir (تفسير) Asbab Al-Nuzul by Al Wahidi, (Qur'an 4:24) [النساء] "We had captured female prisoners of war on the day of Awtas, and because they were already married we disliked having any physical relationship with them. Then we asked the Prophet, Allah bless him and give him peace, about them. And the verse '(All married women are forbidden unto you except those captives whom your right hands possess ~ مَا مَلَكَتْ)' was then revealed, as a result of which we consider it lawful to have a sexual intercourse with them” Tafsir Al jalalain, Qur'an 4:24 [النساء] "What your right hands own of captured slave girls ( مَا مَلَكَتْ ) whom you may have sexual intercourse with even if they should have spouses" Tafsir Ibn Kathir, Qur'an 4:24 [النساء] أَن تَبْتَغُواْ بِأَمْوَلِكُمْ مُّحْصِنِينَ غَيْرَ مُسَـفِحِينَ مُّحْصِنِينَ غَيْرَ مُسَـفِحِينَ فَمَا اسْتَمْتَعْتُمْ بِهِ مِنْهُنَّ فَـَاتُوهُنَّ أُجُورَهُنَّ فَرِيضَةً You are allowed to use your money to marry up to four wives and for the purchase of as many female slaves as you like, all through legal means so as to enjoy them sexually, surrender to them their rightful monetry compensation. ¶ Expanding Slavery and conditional manumission of slavery| examples such as of Bilal. 'You (true Muslims) are the best of peoples ever raised up for mankind.' means, the best of peoples for the people, as you bring them with chains on their necks till they embrace Islam. ~ Sahih al-Bukhari 4557 [Book 65, Hadith 79] Note: All above sources references included are from ٱلْكُتُب ٱلسِّتَّة Sihah al-Sittah, which translates as "The Authentic Six" hadith. @@ADINSANE You are right in part but wrong to a larger extent, as the western histories are very sanitised and little or no true accountability of the transatlantic slave trade is really detailed in the history taught, secular or not. I am British and I can assure you that we very much paper over the acts perpetrated by our ancestors in the histories taught in schools rather than facing up to our past transgressions. There is virtually no history taught in Spain or Portugal about the slave trade to the plantations in the Indo Chinese and Pacific Rim countries. Same as the Americans actually teaching the real history of the slave supported economy of the north and south pre and post civil war, the Jim Crow laws or the treatment of the First Nation tribes by the post civil war governments through to the enforced sterilisation of women up to the 1970's (biggest joke is that the main supporters of this legislation were in main the same political leaning ones that were and are pro life supporters.....just go figure - Nazi Germany spring to mind anyo one?). As regards the Armenian genocide, I think that the British double dealing and reneged agreements to the Armenians and the Kurds is another bit of history that is papered over in regards to the post 1st World War atrocities that the victors were involved in. The genocide of the Kurds by use of poison gas (British critism of Saddam Hussain anyone, and the lack of report of the similarities of the 2 atrocities as detailed by the Kurdish people) and the supposed protection of the Armenians by the British that evaporated (and documentation that effectively shows the duplicity of the British government and effective aid to the new Turkish regime). I am British and not through the sanitised version of our history taught in schools do I know of our involvement in these atrocities, but I can assure you that the majority of my countrymen are oblivious to our shocking acts of barbarity and atrocities carried out directly or collusion with other parties.

Lol the problem isn’t Allah here. It’s the fact that unfortunately classism and slavery has existed throughout society since the beginning of time. Literally every empire that’s risen and fallen. The world of secular nation states you see today and the last 1 century is unlike anything in the world at any given point in history in the sense that we now have centralised governments and diff laws etc. at its time, Islam just came and gave certain rights to slaves, many of which mentioned in the video. Others include that you just feed them and cloth them with exactly what you eat and wear yourself, can’t overwork and over burden them, and must treat them like a brother. Imagine you were born in Europe any time within the last 1400 years. You think you’d have been anything but a slave? If you’re lucky, a merchant, a soldier, etc. during the Roman times it’s believed up to 50% of the population were slaves. One emperor suggested to force slaves to wear bands or something to identify them but was quickly corrected as it was bought to his attention that if the ppl knew how many of them were slaves, they would rebel. The world Slave comes from the word Slav, so many Europeans were enslaved. So many Africans too. Slavery was a thing everywhere unfortunately, wherever there was power, and wherever there was poverty. No one with a heart agrees with it or wants it. Also, in todays world, the whole “working class” are literally by definition slaves. 9/10 working class ppl work 40-60 hrs a week for a minimum wage job that gets taxed as well as every single thing they do in their life in a world of ever growing inflation and increasing cost of life. Most ppl in the Uk for example life paycheck to paycheck. A slave used to receive food, water, shelter in return for their labour. 9/10 working class ppl will work their whole life, literally until they’re the uk retirement age 63 , or until they die. Only enjoying little luxuries here and there if they can afford it. And hardly able to scrape together £50-100 after they’ve paid for their necessities by the end of the month. All they have is food. And shelter and work until they die. My point is, slavery never ended, it just began to include all of us whether on a nation or international scale, ie what we call the working class. Which is really majority of the world.

An Arab Slave Dealer (Syeb-bin-Habib) reported in 1882 to have admitted that of the 300 slaves he acquired from the African interior only 50 of those slaves had reached the East African Coast alive. The slave trade route from the interior to Lake Tanganyika was littered with the skeletons of slaves who died along the route.

Many thanks for covering this topic. The death rates of the Arab Slave Trade far surpassed those of the European and Americas version. Also, the companion Bilal was often the source of ridicule amongst his peers and is not as revered as compared to the others. Islam and Arabic culture to this day still has racial discrimination issues although that disease can be found all over the world so it is not specific or monopolized by one group, nation or culture. I can personally state that during my 20 year tenure in Islam this subject was often avoided.
@khalilabdullahi2930
@khalilabdullahi2930 Жыл бұрын
I would say it is more of Arabic culture and not Islamic. Before the Prophet, blacks were widely seen as inferior in Arabia, but this has no place in Islam. The Prophet taught that an arab is not superior to a black man and vice-versa. This was unheard of at the time. For example, while on their way to Madinah, Abu Dharr (a companion) and Bilal got into an argument, and Abu Dharr out of anger referred to Bilal as “son of a black woman” in a belittling manner. When the Prophet heard of this, he called on Abu Dharr and asked him what he had said to Bilal. When Abu Dharr repeated what he said, the Prophet was angry and replied “You are a man who still has the traits of Jahiliyyah inside you”. Jahiliyyah is used to refer to the period of ignorance in arabia before Islam. From this, it is clear that racism is something Islam came to stop. Nevertheless, this was an isolated occurence and Abu Dharr later went to Bilal and asked for his forgiveness. Bilal was accepted among companions as an equal and was not ridiculed. I don’t know where you got the idea that he was often ridiculed. Unfortunately however, as you rightly point out, some of these Jahiliyyah traits survive to this day despite Islam’s teachings, but it’s clear they do not arise from Islam as there’s no basis for such. Islam is universal and is not synonymous with arabic culture, this is something people need to know before imposing arabic culture on Islam which I fear you have done. There’s no perfect muslim. Humans make mistakes. Don’t judge Islam by the bad actions of some muslims, judge it by what it teaches. However I do agree with you that this is an under discussed topic. We need to educate/remind more muslims that any form of racial discrimination is against the tenets of Islam.

One major reason for the abolition of slavery in Saudi Arabia in 1962 was JFK's "inducement" of allowing the country to have access to US military weapons and expertise which were greatly desired as the civil war in Yemen continued. The US, in turn, was being pressured by Egyptian President Nassar to pressure Saudi Arabia to enact "modernization reforms" as the administration labeled the antislavery laws.

Not one people can be heald acountable for being racist given that at some point in history many groups have been racist towards others. Known from Anas ibn Malik that man from the Egyptian Copts came to Omar ibn al-Khattab (note- second Righteous khalif) in al Madinah, and said, “O Commander of the Faithful! I seek refuge in you from oppression.” Omar replied, “You have sought refuge where it is to be sought.” The Egyptian said: “I was racing the son of `Amr ibn al-`Aas (note ; conquerer of Egypt) and defeated him. Then he began to beat me with a whip saying: I am the Son of Nobles!” So Omar wrote to `Amr, commanding him to appear before him with his son. So they appeared before him. Omar inquired, “Where is the Egyptian? He is to take the whip and beat him!” Then the Egyptian began to beat the son of `Amr with the whip as `Umar said to him, “Beat the Son of Nobles!” Anas said, “So he beat him. I swear by Allah, as he was beating him we pitied his wailing. He did not desist until we stopped him.” Then Omar said to the Egyptian, “Now beat the whip upon `Amr’s bald head!” He replied, “O Commander of the Faithful! For it was his son who beat me, and I have evened the score with him.” Upon this Omar said to `Amr, “Since when do you enslave the people when their mothers bore them as free men?” He said, “O Commander of the Faithful! I was unaware of this, and he did not come to me (for justice).”
