Getting your baby on a sleep schedule is not always easy, but I had a great experience with this method. I transitioned my son to his own room when he was 2 months just so I could get more sleep as I was already back to work. It was hard waking up every 30 minutes with all his little noises! He still slept in the rock n play until he was 3 months but at least he got used to his new surroundings before I transitioned him to his flat crib. One thing at a time, ya know? Then I did sleep training when he was 7 months old, which was recommended by his pediatrician. He was only waking once a night for a bottle, but he already weighed 23 lbs so he really didn’t need it because his belly could hold enough to sustain him for 11-12 hours. So I did some research and put him on a feeding schedule at the end of the day that included an 8oz bottle at 4pm, dinner at 5:30, and another 8oz at 6:45. He hated to be rocked so I would just lay him in his crib at 7pm and he would roll over and pass out. He woke up every night for about a week and I would only pick him up and soothe him a bit and put him right back down. It really wasn’t that bad for us. It also caused us some early mornings but that eventually stopped too. My baby just turned a year old on January 8th and is sleeping straight from 7pm to anywhere between 6:30-8:15am. HE LOVES TO SLEEP! And so do I 😉

I’m so proud of you all. It’s such a common sense method. This first-time mother in 1989, met with Dr Ferber at Children’s in desperation. Pro tip: if she gets sick and her schedule or routine with you becomes disrupted, you may need to retrain. My son was bothered by bad ear infection and quickly started falling asleep in our arms again. We were vigilant about keeping an approximate sleep schedule. And ps, your baby is not stubborn at all. It’s all what they get used to. Good luck!

Actually all methods are some form of cry it out. A baby has the right to express his/her frustration at the fact that he/she has to learn how to sleep independently (without sucking on a nipple, bottle, or being rocked, etc). Anything that doesnt include the sleep prop will cause the baby to cry. ANY method will produce some level of crying. It is simply the baby's only way of expressing his/her desire for the sleep prop. Until he/she learns, and rest assured this is something you cannot do for the baby,-he/she must teach him/herself, the baby will cry because it has no other way of expressing itself. You will be shocked at how well the ferber method works if done correctly. The baby will learn VERY quickly, IF you allow him/her to do so. There's different degrees of involvement you can have of course, and mom always knows best what is working or what is not, trust your instincts. Lastly, DO NOT BE ASHAMED. You are teaching your child a VALUABLE lesson that he/she will retain all his/her life. I know you are a great mom. A well rested mom and baby will be a happy mom and baby. ❤

Thanks a lot for this video; this is encouraging.... just 2days ago, I tried the "cry it out" method and I didnt like it! Something snapped inside me.... just hearing my toddler cry "mama...mama" and I didn't go in.... it just broke my heart. Interestingly enough, it worked! ON THE FIRST NIGHT I TRIED IT! But I couldnt do it anylonger- because I was traumatized. Even though he can't remember the incident, I felt so terrible and guilty the next day. But I am sooooo sleep deprived, I want my bed back and my sleep so I will try the Feber method. I'm just so glad that I'm not the only mom who is so tender hearted when thier baby is crying excessively!.

To all mama’s out there ! Don’t let yourselves be shamed ! Do what feels right to you and for your child . Also and of course this method does not stipulate that you should let your child cry out of shear terror and panic. Hence why you have to go back to reassure them. I spent an entire year, waking up several times a night sleeping no more than a total of six hours in a night, (on really good nights) . Towards the end I could not function properly . Was constantly exhausted , a walk to the park felt like climbing the Mount Everest. Was I being a better mom because I never let him cry ? I don’t think so . I didn’t have the ressources to be really present for him anymore. To be joyful and spend real quality time with him. So mama’s before you get on the edge of burnout don’t feel bad for trying this. Be confident ! You are doing amazing ! You know your child better than anybody else . Much love to all and thanks for this great content ! ❤️

This has given me the courage to try the Ferber method. I had a similar experience, she hardly cried during the process. For me it’s been about giving my daughter the space she needs. Shushing her and patting her actually stimulated her more, I found. And sleep deprivation can lead to postnatal depression so it’s a win win.

Hi! I did it and it was only one night of cries. The next night she woke up only at 4am to eat breastmilk and then at 7 to wake up. So it was 6 hours of sleep instead of every 2 hours. The following night was the same and we are all happy with the results so far :) So it works!!!

We’ve been trying to sleep train our 6 mo daughter since she turned 4 mo with no luck. She hates the swaddle but it’s the only way she’ll sleep. Even then she’s only out 1-2 hours at a time. I’ve gotten away from feeding her to sleep. She plays a little after eating and before laying down. She’s exclusively breastfed. She fights sleep terribly during the day and worst of all is the last time before night sleep. That final time putting her down sometimes goes on for hours. We’ve both tried EVERYTHING we could possibly come up with. From the time she’s tired and ready to finally giving in to sleep she’s up and down. CIO can go for hours. We’re at a loss and I’m exhausted. When she’s busy around the house with dad she can go as long as 4 hours between feedings. Not sure why she can’t at night. What did you do differently to get your baby to sleep for longer periods of time?

@@alanaliddell2437 i have two children and i never let them 'cry themselves to sleep' . if a baby is crying it needs something. even just reassurance they are not alone. to leave them by themselves for a long time is abusive. i'm sickened by this stupid old fashioned thought. selfish thinking about yourself before your own little innocent baby. my daughter had colic and i was there for every moment of her discomfort trying to help her feel better. i never shut the door on her and ignored her.
@daryl90034 жыл бұрын
There is a simple and easy set of guidelines to ensure that your child is safe and comforted. One of the ground rules is that a child who is sick shouldn't start sleep training. If your baby is colicky then you did the right thing by being there. However, there is good evidence that sleep training a healthy, happy, and loved baby is good for both baby and parent. This doesn't have to be your cup of tea, and that's perfectly fine.

I am a grandma now. I did this when my babes were around 6 months....but there was no name for the "method" lol. I remember our 3rd child more for some reason. We prepared for 3 nights of no sleep at all. This actually worked the first night ... So we were elated. The hardest part is to not pick your baby up during one of the times you go in to comfort. Don't give your baby milk during the night .... Offer only water. You are a wonderful mommy! P.s. I had my 6 month old and 2year old stay for 3 days and 2 nights unexpectedly. I knew they didn't have regular nap times and often cat-napped. This grandma needed a break! The baby awoke after about 45 minutes ... That's not long enough for either of us...so I just patted her bottom and shushed rather loudly and for as long as I could each time. Keep patting and bouncing and it worked...yay! She slept a total of about 1 3/4 hours. Also required her brother to have a quiet time...whether he fell asleep or not. Just peeked in to make sure he wasn't up to something. Momma might want to check out KZbin for "pink noise" .... I have used box fans for "white noise", but I discovered there are other colors for sounds! I love the pink noise.

HappilyEverPierre you might want to try getting her on a schedule. Babies thrive on schedules and might help her go to bed earlier. Also, i found that changing in the middle of the night just woke Emmi up more and I learned there's no need to change wet diapers, only poop. Another thing, I tried sleep training Emmi around 4 months and she wasn't quite ready yet. Around 6 months was when Emmi was ready but all babies are different. I am not tough and yes hard to hear them cry. But the Ferber method helps so much because you get to check on them at intervals and reassure Baby (and yourself). Good luck to you!

I know I will need to transfer her to her crib in her own room very soon because obviously she's starting to outgrow the Bassinest. I'm hoping this doesn't change her sleep patterns. Has anyone who's had a good sleeping baby have this change once they switched to their own crib and room? I feel bad for all mommas out there who still can't sleep through the night. I was doing this for hours. I finally said no more. It took 3-5 days and he understood when I put him in his crib it meant it was time to go to sleep, i didn’t even have to rock him anymore! You know your baby. Try it and if it seems like the baby isn’t taking well, wait a few more weeks and try again.

@Amy Anderson I know some people start sooner... But the official AAP recommendation is no sleep training (crying it out) until 4 months (using times checks with Ferber method) and no full extinction until 6 months. There's lots of things you can do that don't require crying at a for younger babies though! Like putting your baby down drowsy but awake.

Oh my! As if you're describing my baby!!! He's 6 months old and since day one he's been alert, awake, and energetic! The older he gets the more active he gets and now that he's 6 months crawling and sprouted two teeth it's so hard to sleep train! I don't know if he's in pain from teething and that's why he's crying and cranky and refusing to sleep or if he's just extra spoiled and wants to fall asleep on my chest. Nonetheless, I give in and pick him up and nurse him to bed. He only naps 2 times a day for a total of 1.5 hr-3 hrs. And at night he's up every two hours or less 😩💔 I tried the CIO method and the Ferber method and for some reason I just can't get him to sleep on his own

Laila Ibrahim bless your heart. It's so hard not knowing why they are crying. 6 months was when I started sleep training Emmi. Might I suggest, give Baby baby ibuprofen before bed for his teeth, make sure baby is well fed, diaper changed and dressed so he won't get hot or cold. Then when he cries you will be able to rest assured he is perfectly fine, just fighting sleep. Try the Ferber method again. I swear by it. Also, since he is used to eating every two hours, his tummy might not be able to go all night. I kept one feeding in the very middle of the night for a few days. Also, try keeping to a schedule for naps during the day. When I did this, Emmi thrived and would take two naps during the day. They have never been long naps but still, she slept! I understand how you feel exactly, momma! I want to rush to my baby's every cry. We, as moms, can't help it! But, as Emmi has gotten older, I've realized how teachable they really are and how badly they need to learn to put themselves to sleep and spend some time alone. I'm here for you if you need support or have more questions! You CAN do this!

We're on day 2 of the Ferber method and it sucks. 😭 my little guy wakes every 2 hours to comfort nurse and without that he's throwing the biggest tantrums. He's 8 months... I need some motivation to keep this going mamas! I'm so sleep deprived!

giselle guido How has it gone for you? I will start the Ferber Method tomorrow and would like to know how it has gone for you so far? My baby is 6 months, and she also comfort feeds at night every 2 hours😪😪😪😪😔 did you stop with the night feedings? Sorry to many questions.

Nadiya Nanoha I stopped trying this method, tried it one time for 30 min, could not stand seeing my baby cry. Even though she had been fed and changed she cried like she was screaming for me to help her. I gave in, and she was so sentimental afterwards. I felt so bad, all she wanted was for me to hold her and comfort her, I'm the only person she trusts. She will only be a baby for a while, I should enjoy it. I saw it from the positive side, she's 7 months now still wakes up, and I enjoy watching her comfort feed 😁❤ Love my baby, and will do anything to see her happy😍

It's been almost 2 months and it has been night and day with my little one. It takes a lot of time and patience. My mother in law stayed with us for a week and ever since then he is only waking 1-2 times at night! Day naps are good practice, no more feeding to sleep is the biggest game changer! Baby will learn to fall asleep on their own. Good luck mama!

I started at 4 months because I also have a stubborn baby who was sleep through the night some nights, but not consistently, and then he started a bad habit of waking 30mins after putting him down for the night. The night he turned 4m he did it, and I turned to my husband and said, "You know what, we're starting sleep training right now." I knew he was ready because aside from inconsistently sleeping through the night, I had personally witnessed him wake up and fall back to sleep on his own while in there refilling my diaper caddy at like 2 weeks.

He would also smile when I came into visit in the middle of the night before sleep training, and when they're doing that you know they've got you trained.

I'm doing this method as I type! Its so so hard and even harder when you take the dummy away as well as I found that it stopped my baby from sleeping. She is crying right now for her morning nap and its breaking my heart. She made it through the night but woke 4 times. I got up with her at 5:30am this morning to give her cuddles etc. During the night she did put herself back to sleep every single time without full on crying. Roll on 2 days time where things MIGHT start to get better,,,,

It's SO hard when babies don't sleep. My first baby was so easy and my second didn't sleep for an entire year. I had trouble with CIO. More than 5 minutes stresses me out so it didn't work for me, but this method sounds like a good compromise.

Your baby seems to be a healthy baby who still has some trust in you. Babies don't understand why they're left alone and therefore cry. When they stop it's no sign that they know how to sooth themselves but of giving up. You're Baby just needs you. That's normal and a good sign.

Ive had to revert back to putting 1yr old in the swing which we never used until a few months ago. I had to try something as she would scream and scream and stand up in the crib as soon as we would lay her down. Now the car seat and swing are her best sleep spots due to the restraints..its like she feels them knows shes stuck in the chair so might as well sleep lol. The problem started when she learned to stand up. we could not get her to lay down in the crib. Also if she falls asleep before 10pm she wakes up at 1-2am and is ready to play like it was a nap as in 2 weeks ago she did not go back to sleep until around 7:30am. She is regularly up to 12-1am now with sporadic 1-2am. I hate the thought of her feeling like I abandoned her or I wonder if allowing them to scream like that causes emotional damage. I mean think about it our nature and our ancient history until the last few hundred yrs mothers kept their babies very close at all times because of natural dangers. A baby obviously understands parents=survival. Many animal babies cry when separated as a survival mechanism. So is there psychological damage in the distress of this crying?
@simply-allie7 жыл бұрын
James Bromley bless your heart! It's true that when babies learn new skills (like standing) it can disrupt their sleep schedules for a bit. That's where sleep training comes into play. If I may, I suggest you get Baby on a schedule. Babies thrive on schedules. I put Emmi to bed around 7:30 every single night. At one year of age, babies should be able to sleep through the night. Them being able to put them selves to sleep is a life skill they will use for the rest of their lives. I know it's so hard to hear them cry because our mommy instinct kicks in and we want to comfort them. I believe mom's should do what they feel is best for their baby. But I personally believe in my baby sleeping when she should, for her sake and mine. As far as letting them cry harming them psychologically, I don't believe it does. Although I am no Dr. We give them all the love they need during the day, and we meet all their needs before putting them to bed (fed, warm clothes, dry diaper). Their only issue should be that they don't know how to put them selves to sleep. It's our job as parents to teach them things like how to walk and talk and sleeping is just one of those things we teach them too. You might want to double check with your Ped about the Ferber method. My Ped was the one who introduced it to me. Wishing sweet sleep for you and your baby soon! ❤️

To all the negative comments: EVERY BABY/PARENT IS DIFFERENT. DIFFERENT METHODS WORK FOR DIFFERENT BABIES/PARENTS ! This method worked for me being the only care provider with not much help at all! Mothers need a break to be mentally and emotionally stable to care for a child at the best ability. although it may seem cruel, it’s a cruel world! Just like when birds teach their babies to fly, they do or they don’t. 🤷🏽♀️. Lately I have been waiting 5-10 minutes of crying and I soothe and put my son back in the crib as many times as it takes and he goes to sleep!

Hi everyone, maybe somebody can help me.. My baby just turned 7 months, he is bottle fed since 4 months and eats solid foods twice a day. So recently he's been really good at naps, I do eat-play-sleep-play, he always falls asleep on his own. At nighttime as well. But when he wakes up he doesn't fall back to sleep. I don't understand why he's not settling himself again when he wakes up during the night, because he CAN fall asleep on his own. Every sleep training says like "your baby has to learn to fall asleep on his own, then he'll sleep through the night"...am I the only one?? He wakes every 3h but he's not hungry. I'm not expecting him to sleep 12h but at least 6..

I’m sure 2 1/2 month is too young but I CANT put him down at ALL!! I have to hold him for all his naps. So we’re at our wits end about what to do and if we need to wait until 4 months for sleep training. He hates anything that moves so nothing like that has worked. At least I don’t feel alone with this. Thanks again for this video.

Thank you SO MUCH for this!! You have given me hope. I am all for attachment parenting but sleep is a major issue for us. I would really appreciate your response here: Is your sweet baby able to sleep okay when you are out and about? I.e., if you visit a friend/in laws, if you are out (mall, park, etc)? In case your outing runs into nap time, have her sleep training allowed her to sleep in those situations or does she have to be in the exact same environment that she was sleep trained in?
@simply-allie7 жыл бұрын
Yensoun TA Emmi is and always has been very alert and observant of everything around her. She won't fall asleep say, in a store but she will fall asleep in the car which is something she wouldn't do before training. Also, training has allowed her to nap when I lay her down at other people's houses but she has to have her lovey, a noisemaker and it has to be sort of dark in the room. These are her sleep cues. I would love for Emmi to be a baby that sleeps under any circumstances but that's just not her. But with sleep training at least I can set her up for success and she gets the nap she needs! I believe in sleep training and I know you can do it and will not regret it!!!! I'd love to hear how it goes for you! Or answer any questions you might have!
@yensounta65017 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your response! My babe is the same way--super alert since Day 1. She is almost 4 months and we have sleep challenges that I hope to work on when the time is right but I want to get as informed as possible now. She nurses to sleep currently and takes all her naps in the swing. She wakes about 3-4x/night to nurse/comfort. I'm exhausted but hoping for some light at the end of the tunnel. I go to my in laws and parents house quite a bit during the week so that's why I was wondering about napping at other people's houses. Thanks for that! Did you have to let her CIO at their house or does she go to sleep okay? I foresee my in laws having an issue with letting her cry. Also, when did you introduce her lovey? I have a couple now but not sure when it's okay for her to sleep with it. Thanks again for your support Mama

Sooo I tried this last night with my 4 month and 1 week old daughter. Had to go in after 5 minutes and 10 minutes, then she fell asleep it was great. She was asleep by 7:50. Then she woke up at 11 and I had to go in there once and she fell back asleep. Then at 12:50 am she woke up, I went in there a couple times. She never calmed down and it was 1:30 so I figured it had been 6.5 hours since she ate so I nursed her and put her back down. Kept going back in, in the intervals until 3:30 am... I gave up and brought her into bed with me. What do you do when she won’t go back to sleep in the middle of the night?????
