I love the way you nonchalantly mention things like your dislike of airports and then just get back on topic.

Interesting that the golden boar hair “shines/glows at night”. It’s well known by gold prospectors that gold can indeed be seen in creeks or on the ground reflecting moonlight at night. This could have been a “hidden” kenning for intelligently locating sources of naturally occurring placer gold.

The story of how Ivaldi's sons created Mjolnir and Sif's golden hair as well as how Sleipnir was born are two of my favorite myths. Thank you for discussing the importance of boars--I did not know that the sacrificial animals could be used to swear oaths. That'll make this year's Yule celebration interesting :)
@animistchannel29835 жыл бұрын
You could have people make their most important New Year's resolution on a honey-cured ham. That would give it both the power of the heart of Boar to complete the task, and the witness of the royal/divine honey to hold them true. Complete it with a toast of mead when everyone has finished, if any good mead is available :)

Hi, Dr. Crawford, not sure if you will see this. I’m too poor for patreon, but I did buy the wanderer’s havamal (in case that makes you more inclined to consider my question). I was looking at the picture of sleipnir on the cover of the penguin classics paperback of the Prose Edda and noticed that the crossing of the legs looks an awful lot like a valknut. Is it at all likely that this is the origin of that symbol and it’s assumed tie to Odin?
@seanboyd28985 жыл бұрын
Some musings on why you would want a golden boar: High class (nobility) would count their wealth in gold and precious metals, while the lower classes may count their wealth in the availability of food (large meat animals), with both classes recognising the value of people, land, and work animals. So while every impressive thing in mythology either emits or absorbs light, the golden animals (basically all divine animals off the top of my head), are sort of a bridging of values between the two classes. It may also reflect in þorr being a sort of cross class hero as his chariot goats serve both purposes. Keep in mind, I am no expert in this field. I just know that most of the stories make sense if the entire context is known, which is difficult in the case of incomplete records.
