The Elder Futhark Sequence

*Please Read:* Forgot to say something. The Vadstena bracteate is another finding (and the only, aside from the Kylver Stone) that contains the “sequence” of the Elder Futhark. I think the Vadstena bracteate was a forgery. Its story doesn't convince me because it was supposedly found in 1774 when archaeology didn't exist yet, and yet it survived until the first half of the 20th century. Old findings such as that, without any proper equipment and treatment, never last that long and are often melted down or lost again, or traded over and over again, or simply disappear, especially metal due to corrosion due to contact with oxygen and without any treatment for over 2 centuries (I speak as an archaeologist and as someone who also deals with the restoration of archaeological metal artefacts). The Vadstena bracteate was stolen from the Swedish Museum of National Antiquities in 1938 and was never found to this day, just 2 decades after the Kylver Stone had been found which contains the "sequence of the Elder Futhark" which was precisely during this time that it was agreed that this was the official "sequence" of the Elder Futhark, but this idea, as said in this video, was only based on this finding alone, and after that there may have been attempts to forge items to prove that that was indeed the sequence, by finding other artefacts . During the early 20th century thousands of forgeries were made by many countries only to prove their claims based on nationalist political ideas. The Kylver Stone and the Vadstena bracteate are the only ones that contain this "sequence". The Kylver Stone is genuine, but I have my doubts on the Vadstena bracteate. Antiquaries and Museums of Antiquities have always been well known to contain and produce forgeries. The official story is that the Vadstena bracteate was "stolen" but I think it was taken out and destroyed by the Museum itself because it was a forgery. Many experts during the 20s of the 20th century were going to these museums all over Europe to make sure these items were genuine, and I think the Museum knew it was a forgery and got rid of it to avoid shame and dishonesty, which would be a hard blow on their business and on the names of the scientist involved. If there is no artefact to be study there is no proof it was genuine or false. Why was the Elder Futhark divided into 3 aetts? - I have read countless books and academic works and no one seems to be certain. Of the 24 runes of the so called Elder Futhark, there were probably more runes that have been lost to us (Anglo-Frisian Futhark consisted in 33 runic symbols, for instance), and the number 24 and divided into 3 rows might be an Etrusco-Italic influence, but nothing has been proven yet. The Etruscan alphabet had 26 characters; Archaic Latin had 21 characters, +2 added after the 1st century, adopting the Greek letters Y and Z, making it 23 characters (The Roman Emperor in the 1st century (41 to 54 CE) Tiberius Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus tried to add 3 characters to the Archaic Latin Alphabet which would have made 24 characters, and this survived for a time, but did not last, and anyway the Germanic peoples only started to use the runes a century later in the 2nd century); Old Italic Alphabet consists in 27 characters. The 24 runes of the Elder Futhark correspond to letters of the Latin alphabet, which seems to have been indeed an Iron Age Italic attempt to create a “Germanic” alphabet. However, their names and meaning (runic characters of the Elder Futhark) are entirely reconstructed based on younger runic systems; we have no record of the names of the runes in the Elder Futhark, nor do we have a record of the meaning of each rune, but it has been deduced through comparison to younger developments, linguistic reconstruction and etymological research.

Very interesting indeed! I use the runes as an oracle since I studied them 7 years ago. Almost everything I was told was not accurate, so I had to investigate a lot by my own. I named my son after my grandfather, I love and miss him very much, he was wonderful and taken from my family too soon. My son talks about him as if he knows him (my son was born over 6 years after he passed). Me and my mom talk about my grandpa so much, my son will sit there and say things like "my opa sam used to do this/ like this" etc, as if he was still here. In a way, he is. And for me there was no doubt I would name my son after him. And yes, technically it's not my son's opa, he's my opa and his great-grandfather but because he hears me say opa he just adopted saying it (we speak german at home)

The six and eight branches of the tree fits perfectly with the Grumpanbrakteatens futhark's composition which consists of a rune line of 8 runes : (separation sign) 6 runes : (separation sign) 8 runes. It may indicate that the Grumpanbrakteatens futhark actually is older (or more correctly that the 8-6-8 composition preceded the 8-8-8 composition, they've must have added two letters).

I'm coming in very late on this one but I'm wondering about how if the futhark sequence is a modern standardisation based onky on the Kylver stone, then why do the Anglo Saxon rune poem and the old Norwegian & Icelandic rune poems follow that basic futhark sequence? I personally kind of lean towards the idea that each rune stave has several layers of significance and that the sequence (at least of the first aett) reflects a version of the creation myth. I have a feeling that the first rune, fehu, represents not only cattle but also Audhumbla, the first cow & first being. Then Uruz could possibly represent not only the wild aurochs but also on a more subtle level Ymir (Umir?) as a primal ancestor/ sacrificial being. Then the giants appear on the scene with thurisaz, then consciousness ( the gods) with ansuz, then the establishment of the "right" ordering of nature and the setting of the cycles of life with raidho. Dissolution , death and decay comes in with kenaz/kaun, which seems to me to symbolise the "swelling" of a grave mound, a "house of rotten flesh", and also the corpse fire or willowisp light which would explain the anglosaxon rune poem's reference to the torch burning where the athelings sleep. (If you read atheling/noble as a euphemism for the dead). The following rune gebo/gifu would refer to sacrifice gift-giving, the exchange between beings that allows life to endure despite mortality, and the following staves can also be interpreted in various ways but I've rambled on a fair bit so I'll leave it there. Anyways personally I have a strong feeling that the futhark order does have a real significance but I suppose its always going to be guesswork

@@ArithHärger odin is supposed to have around 205 names, that seems like far too many for one god. is odin actually a combination of numerous older gods under one name? i am also wondering whether some aspects of viking culture were influenced by the celts; the vikings were eighth to ninth century and attacked britain, so they might have taken some of that away with them. and what is this about thor, he shares characteristics with a number of other gods of thunder and lightning from other cultures. did the vikings adopt him as well? how many of the viking gods actually belong just to the scandinavians?

This is about the god "Fosite" which was a Frisian god of justice and is believed to be inspired by Poseidon, this probably happened because of the trading between the Greeks and Frisians (Dorestad what is now known as the city of Utrecht situated in the Netherlands was at that time a city/town of the "kingdom of Frisia" and was the tradingcenter of Europe at this time). In turn Norse mythology adopted this god from the Frisians and is known there as "Forseti".

@@marcrhodes-taylor5347 Also about the names of Odin, 205 names seems far fetched (or maybe by "names" they also count the titles associated with Odin) but Odin indeed had a lot of translations here are the ones i know of: Odin= Old Norse Oden= Danish/Swedish Woden= Anglo-Saxon Wodan= Old-Frankish Wuoden= Alemannic Wotan/Wothan= also a Germanic translation (dont know exactly to which Germanic language it belongs to) Guodan= Lombardic Weda (also my user name)= Old-Frisian Edit: Also the term "Norse mythology" is to my believe not correct or at least most of the times misinterpreted. The Germanic people (where Scandinavia is also a part of) all believed for the majority (with a few exceptions of some local Gods) in the same Gods, the only difference being the names they gave to the Gods (So to my opinion "Germanic mythology" would be the more accurate term to use).

Greeks adapted the Canaanite 'Aleph-Beth' in creating the 'Alpha-Beta', which has some similarity in letter order, but its defining feature is that it's a 'phonetic' writing system, with fewer characters to learn than the 'syllabaries' of earlier systems (Cuneiform & Hieroglyphs, & maybe Genevieve Von Petzinger's cave symbols, deeper in the roots of the World Tree).

Could this be an accounting of lineage? A family's history of their ancestors wrote down for prosperity? It would make sense that if the stone indeed was a memorial stone that it was simply a way of recording a family or personal ancestry. But i get little bit confused :D That what i was thinking there must be more than 24 runes and VedRusses say there is 3milion runes 1 rune have 5 positions so there must be 600000 runes, but i think they collected them from different traditions. But about Elder Furhark if there is more than 24 runes then we dont have complete system? And then have about runic yoga, mudras or Runic martial art Stav, teacher of this system say that he live in 45 generation, that something ~2000years, but runic poses are still 24. And then there is Weird rune(25), some people say its new, but some say not. Lets look on Odin name Wiliam Jones belive Vodan(Odin) is the same like Budha who come to India frome North, then all runes what we can find from north to est belongs to Elder Futhark!? Odin, Vodin, Voutan.... means wood or wind and in Budhist tradition we can find Forest tradition from Theravada budhists and their main practise i will call like emptiness/nothing, it starts with concentration on ņow and there' and contionius with concentration on your breath(wind) and ends with nothing :D any way if there is no connection between Budhas main practice(weird) and Elder futhark i will think north peoples practiced that too and its nothing new even if it dose't exist because it dosn't exist in material reality. Its like in tantrik hinduaism 107 male meditations, but only one female meditation... and i think we always can find some new male practice. Now i am confused to go deeper in my rune studies because it looks like endless way or go to budhist emptiness. Is Elder Furhark complete system or any one who read this have feeling that it missing something? For example 3D Yggdrasil with 9 worlds and 24 ways between them, i can simply make it with 28 or more ways between this worlds, why just 24. Is there some rational meaning why peoples limit their minds?

Comparing the stone and the graphic you show there seems to be some runes that are different between the two. One specifically is ansuz the fourth rune in the sequences shown. It appears to be backwards. Also Berkanan appears to be backwards between the two. Can you explain why that would be?

About Dagaz/Odhala...The heir must arise, like the new sun at dawn, and take over its inheritance, which is a left over land upon which to reign. Your stone example expresses Yew and Pertho also interchanged at times, for no apparent reason either. One could think that the world-tree, Yggdrasil, must exist before the womb of birth. However, when humans find safety in the trunk of the tree, it might be seen as more important to begin with. It's all a guess, of course. The sequence is mythological in basis, and the number of 8x3 is the 8-legged "magical" shield that is the Bagua in China. The myth of that Chinese symbol holds that Fuxi found these 8 trigram symbols in the 8 footprints of a "water-horse" upon whose flank was a number pattern called the Luoshu. This luoshu has a significant 3x3 magical square pattern that also creates the "medicine wheel" cosmology common in Traditional Chinese Medicine as well as Plains Indian Sweat Lodges. The common theme was connected to the stone-golden embryo, like Hiranyagarbha in India. Pangu in China, Buri in the Norse and "Golden Embryo" in Greece all make a ritual sense in Stone Boy from the core of Sweat Lodge myth-ritual importance. The importance of this sweat ritual is for rebirth. The sweat lodge is an Ice Age ritual that might well have been common before New World migrations from Asia. It could have even been a Beringia ritual that spread in both directions after the land was set free. We cannot know. However, the binding of Fenrir shares an important detail to Plains sweat lodges; the anchoring peg and its great importance. The anchoring of Fenrir's chain was like burying something in a pit grave, like the one detailed by Herodotus when discussing Zalmoxis where a stone was rolled over the opening. This even goes to relate to later Christian myth with the rebirth of Christ "walking out incarnate," a phrase exactly used for the newly deified Zalmoxis of the Geats. The sweat lodge is a rebirth/healing ritual, and one of the most primal aspects of a warrior society is how does a warrior tame the "antisocial" ethic of killing within a social/civic environment? I believe the Fenrir myth refers to the nostalgic memory of Germanic steppe experience where the Wide-Blue God chose the wolf for his war band. This mythic image is maintained even today in the cult of Tengri, who is said to "have many forms, as 5 fingers make 1 fist." The other aspect of the myth is how the Divine King ("Priest-King") of primal urban life embraced and lost his power to the Warrior king, which is also apparently validated by archaeology as we are discovering Neolithic temple centers. It is also harmonious with the Mesopotamian experience that eventually only somewhat deified kings after an influence from Egyptian traditions of a trinity between the dead God-Father in the Pyramid/Rock and the newborn Falcon of the Sun who inherits the kingdom (bringing us back to the O-D/D-O order). Another important aspect of Fenrir's binding is "a certain sword" used as a mouth-prop to keep the mouth from biting. The flapping of the sweat lodge door is a detail often mentioned much like the importance of the anchoring peg. Yet, the dripping of the wolf's spit down the sword, called "Hope," might be confusing if we don't include a physiological awareness of the cerebrospinal relationship. If Divinity is "in the head/brain" (home of the Logos from Aristotle) then the certain sword, Tyrfingr, is the spinal cord and the spit dripping down is the cerebrospinal fluid. As a healing concern, if that fluid drips down then there is hope for remaining alive from any injuries. It is also the essence of a mystical physiological tool that is the shushumna in Yoga, or the Tree that is a human. We could even say it relates to Pandora's box (head-spine), having released all sorts of terrible things, but Hope is trapped inside. Similarly, Prometheus gave us fire after we were refused it, but "Forethought" defended himself by saying, "All arts and sciences derive from my gift, only to praise you, the gods." Pandora's box contained greed, violence, and many other things like warfare...which brings us back to the priest-king empowering the warrior king by saying that Kingship "came from on high" (came from Heaven). Pandora's box and the gift of Fire represent similar social ethics of how our human intelligence gets us in trouble as well as creates "great things." Here we can wonder about Tyrfingr or Týrfingr. One means "Turfling" and the other "God's finger." The latter makes sense according to Snorri's binding of Fenrir, but the former may have a precedent in a Peloponnesian king (I heard it on a KZbin history video and I can't find the reference at the moment). Considering the Gothic sword was the Excalibur of the Goths, in that it granted kingship, we can see how the two may have been a word-play trick common in oral tradition poetics. Both Excalibur and Tyrfingr were stuck in a stone, one to await the new heir-king, and the other to attack dwarfs who fled to the stone. If the spinal cord is the sword, the spine would be the stone housing it. Freya's episode with the 4 dwarfs, however, results in her gift of the amber (red-gold) necklace, Brísingamen. This also reflects the sweat lodge ritual which, in all traditions of the plains, MUST include prayers to the 4 directions as essential to the ritual. This is why I believe the 4 dwarfs with whom Freya was intimate were the 4 directions who were also personified as the directions. Loki stealing the apples of immorality is also in the sweat lodge as the rocks are heated in "the fire that never dies" and are taken into the lodge that is essentially an "earth oven" with a bull/buffalo sacrifice whose body is "thrown into the middle" of the ceremonial grounds when the mound of earth is taken to make the pit within the lodge. As for the order of the runes: Feoh is Audhumla; Uruz is Ymir; Thurisaz is from Thyrsus, the pine-cone spear carried by Dionysius; Ansuz is Holy Spirit, but the God that sacrifices Ymir; Raidho is the evolutionary movement begun by the murder of Ymir (linked to the Diopolieia, the first sacrifice to Zeus, God of the Polis) that is the nature of mortal material existence, a wave to be ridden by limited mortals and refers to Odin's self-sacrifice [Hugr-Huginn=>Odhr-Odhinn] so that sensation hangs upon man for finding the runes; Kenaz is the purpose for the hanging, a bright torch that is an ulcer when one overthinks, a condition often cautioned in the Hávamál; Gebo is the gift of the runes as well as the exchange of relations between Heaven and Earth in Death/rebirth of mortals, as well as the wanderer who goes out of "our lands" to seek wisdom from "Útgardhr" for our benefit; Wunjo is the gained glory for having returned with a saving grace of wisdom for the people, a warrior's gift as an alchemist/shaman within a sweat lodge of rebirth. Hagalaz is the punishment, torture, endured by the warrior, relating to the punishment of Prometheus or evils from Pandora's box; Nauthiz is the asceticism endured by the mystic to create need in a ritualized death; Isa is the winter ice that is that death season as Yule is when the water between living and dead freezes so ancestors may join our festivities of Light; Jera is the earth-wheel of the year, connected by the Great Pole ("Taiji") or Earth Axle (Axis Mundi) to the Wheel of Heaven (Stars of the Ecliptic) which is the promise of new life as Time moves forward in a circular coil, repeating but always different; "The best of bows," the yew, is this tree of the axis Mundi that is the hope of rebirth from that death; Pertho is the womb or trunk of the tree that saves humanity during Ragnarök; Algiz is the elk antler used by Freyr to kill Beli, who stole the Sun to make Winter (related to the Blue Elk in the Kalevala); Sowelo is the sun returned by the Vanic lord in Spring. Tiwaz is the God who judges and delivers punishments but Berkano is the Mother of healing compassion as "Birching" is a Swedish folk tradition to place sick children through a split birch "womb" for healing, and She grants us solutions to the punishments decried by Týr; Ehwaz is the horse that is the Human (Mannaz) ridden by the Holy Spirit (first aett); Laguz is the lake/water brought back by the horse-warrior (relating to the Cavelier cults of Thiassoi of Theos Hypsistos during the Hellenic and Roman eras in Greece and Anatolia), but is also the cup bearer for a sweat practice ("water is life"); Inguz is the fertile lord (Ish-vara), married to Gerdhr/Garden (the shape of the rune); and from their produce is the heir born as the Dawn grants a new hope of a new cycle; Odhala is the land waiting for the heir to reclaim as his gift, the covenant similar to the Dorian cultural experience.

My insight, for its worth: The sequence is a battle objective, plan, put together by a group of men, each having input, to bring downfall to an enemy. The conflict is for their homes, land. They want the return of peace and harmony. The "tree" engraving represents the leadership of the group, all of one mind, a signature. The two short staves on the right side represent sons/boys, extensions of their fathers. Unfortunately, they may have undermined their efforts in the desire to be strategic with the runes. SUEUS is an amen, blessing, or summation, meaning: success, strength, means to an end, freedom and honor. They are fighting for their homes. We will never know the outcome.

I inquired of Freya Aswynn once the reason her Futhark ended with Daguz instead of Othala which is more common. She said it had to do with women being different than men. I respect her for her answer as it has been the only explanation I have heard. The orthodoxy of the Rune-Gild posits that Othala is the ending. So maybe she is on to something.

It always made sense to me that Fehu to Othala represents the journey from mortality & permanence to immortality & godhood, this is Odin's story. This is the same as the alchemical transmutation process, the creation of the philosopher's stone, and this is also the fool's or hero's journey which is depicted in the Tarot and most mythologies and fantasy stories (like the story of Sigurd for example). This also works on a more mundane level as impermanent things like trees, cattle, money and the mortal body can be used to make something permanent such as buildings, society, art, family. Freyr's Aett represents the material and safety of childhood, when one is nurtured by one's mother. Hagal's or Odin's Aett is the middle years and the connection to nature and the spiritual, the shamanic journey. Tyr's Aett is when you have grown up and reflect on your life with more wisdom, and you try to implement these experiences in society and try to make something permanent out of it. From this perspective, I think Dagaz as the last rune also makes sense as it can be seen to represent the realization of non-duality, i.e. Zen, Satori, so the order of the runes can also be seen as the spiritual journey to enlightenment. I think saying that the order doesn't matter is very strange if we compare the runes to Hebrew letters where the order very much does matter in a spiritual context, same thing with Greek letters, as "Alpha & Omega" is anything but arbitrary. Overall, I think we have to look past the dry archaeological bits of the runes and understand them from a more holistic spiritual perspective. Now I might be going too far here, but I think it's a very real possibility that Lord of the Rings can be seen as the same story, Tolkien was very well versed in Norse mythology and the German myth is obviously the key influence in his work. Frodo is the fool who meets the magician in the beginning and then completes the journey to enlightenment. He begins in a very safe and happy environment (Freyr's aett), he is then forced through hostile nature environments (Hagal's aett) and it all then escalates to big wars between civilizations (Tyr's aett). Frodo's name also begins with Fehu and ends with Othala, this might be a deliberate hint from Tolkien. I don't think it's too far-fetched since there's a lot of deep, hidden symbolism in his work, but I don't know.

Love your work, but you lost me on this one. I like the story of your theory, but haven't heard anything deeper than your opinion. Where are other scholars who claim that there is no phonetic system to the Runes? Multidisciplinary texts - such as Bruce Dickens (1915), Sven B.F. Jansson (1962), R.I. Page (1973), Johanna Drucker, (1995) (that's just what I have handy, and not including ANY "magickal" texts). Since I am limited to reading in English, I was hoping to hear sources of others who believe as you do, that Runes were merely symbolic ("merely," yes, I haven't quoted mages here), and had no phonetic componant (are the practices of staldr and galdr irrelevent, then?). What then, of all the Runestones which are translateable into "alph-betic" language? Your denials of "alphabet status" lead to sweeping claims, and I know you do scholarly work, but - - - I'd like to hear more. It's easy to accept the Iberian influence, but how is this "not an alphabet?"
