Thank you so much! I'm 20 and 5ft, and I have HAD IT with pants not fitting me. I really appreciate this, thank you! It's so simple, I'm kicking myself for only looking into it now! Also, I really appreciate coming across an aussie tutorial! It's funny but hearing a familiar accent and using the metric system makes it so much clearer and makes me feel like I can actually try my hand at sewing 😂

Thank you!!! Thank you!!! Thank you!!! I have to rehem all of my pants by hand and have for many decades. Doing the cut and fold method worked fine but I hated losing the original hem. I watched dozens of other videos that were not as clearly explained and demonstrated as you have done here. With trepidation, I finished my first rehemmed jeans and they were PERFECT. This method is sew ez. Thank you, again.

I have an extremely similar style jeans to these wide leg ones and My mom is telling me to not try this and take it to a pro instead. However I’m broke and she isn’t paying for it so I’m gonna do it anyway. I also have basically very very basic knowledge of sewing by hand so, I’ll update y’all :)

OMG!! 3 hours and a couple breaks later, I did it! My mom was genuinely shocked at how professional it looked. I even skipped the step of the extra stitch inside instead just pressed the iron real well, Im only gonna be wearing it for a couple hours anyway so I feel Ike it’ll be fine! I am literally 5’1’’ every single pair I own is too long, guess who’s hemming every pair this week haha

Thanks for this tutorial! It’s definitely the quickest and easiest guide I’ve found (and great for those without sewing machines). My only concern is that, depending on the weight of the denim, this method leaves a lot of bulky fabric just above the new hem. Do you ever cut off the excess material rather than anchoring it at the seams and ironing it down? If so, what’s the best approach? Thanks again!
@SlewLiving
@SlewLiving 6 ай бұрын
Thank you for leaving a lovely comment! Yes, the fabric can get quite bulky toward the hem. I would avoid cutting it because denim frays very quickly leaving lots of loose long threads, so unless you have access to a serger or a zig zag stitch to clean up after cutting, I would avoid it. If you had access to a serger or a zig zag stitch you could easily trim off the excess fabric and serge so that the fraying doesn't occur. Hope that helps!

can you cut the excess that was folding over on the inside after you’re done sewing the hem so it’s not as bulky at the bottom?
@SlewLiving
@SlewLiving 2 жыл бұрын
You can except denim does fray quite a lot. So if you have a serger or zig zag stitch it would hold the edge together and stop it from fraying (but of course those are machines and not by hand)

just wondering, other than the fact that you don't want to cut the fabric, is there any reason why you wouldn't want to cut off the excess folded part of the jeans (the part that is hidden inside the pant leg) once you've finished the hem?

I just need to do some sweatpants that I lounge around the house in. I suppose to handle the excess that is rolled underneath, I could do a stitch all the way around, not just at the side seams. After all, this is just something I wear at home anyway.

Hi! Just about to try this out, great easy to follow vid :) If I try it out on flared jeans, since the hem is slightly bigger then where i'm going to stitch it too, do i cut off some of the hem? In the vid I noticed there's a slight difference for your pants too but it didn't seem to change anything
@SlewLiving
@SlewLiving 3 жыл бұрын
Flared jeans shouldn't be any different when sewing them to the length you want, but then make sure you securely stitch all the extra fabric up to the side seams so that it's hidden and won't easily fall down. You could fold some of the extra fabric too when you hide it away!

Would this for sleeves on a wool jumper?
@SlewLiving
@SlewLiving Ай бұрын
I think it would! Especially if it has a cuff. But I would be cautious of the extra bulk it would create around your arms/hands which could be annoying, and I would not cut away the excess fabric since it's likely a knitted jumper and could cause unravelling or holes to form.

Mm I would say any regular sewing machine that you can get your hands on that is in good working condition! There are lots of affordable second hand options, and also new options that offer very similar quality. Try to check reviews as there will be some rated more highly than others, but entry level machines from Brother, Singer, Janome should all so the trick!

I took them up 4cm in total, which meant the part I sewed up was 5cm to allow for the extra 1cm of original hem to drop back down and add to the length again!
