The captain's log is central to the Star Trek aesthetic, because Roddenberry was inspired to write TOS after reading the captain's log of the HMS Beagle. The incidents in Tahiti are probably also why there are so many sex planets.

The topless tap dancing bar is where Picard first met Beverly. This was of course before Jack and Wesley. The plot thickens...

@1:25:29- pretty much it was probably Studio Notes, or notes sent down from the studio executives that got the dailys and the episode’s script and premise-- and then with Rick Berman, decided that the episode was not enough on its face as a slice of life kind of episode, focusing on Data’s perception of everyday human life and experience.

I was flabbergasted that this was our introduction to Keiko (I watched DS9 before TNG). The O'Briens had a terrible relationship right from the off 😅

I looked up the recipe and it says microwave on high for 6 to 13 minutes.... That's an enormous difference! Has Rachel Ray figured out how to trick people into setting their kitchens on fire with their microwaves? I'm picturing bored celebrity chefs taking random bets/challenges

If yous haven't seen the Orville I would recommend it. Alot of the questions and stuff yous Bring up are covered in that. Like there's an episode about holodeck porn addiction and how it effects one of the characters relationship

Regarding holodeck porn: There is such a thing as emotional infidelity. The most important thing is to communicate openly with your partner and set mutually acceptable boundaries. Fuck whatever society thinks about what you do in the holodeck, though.

@newbiestartrek To be fair, Star Trek doesn't *work* with any kind of politics or economic system. In a post scarcity world, with limitless energy and the ability to make anything you want out of nothing, most of economic concepts no longer apply. Somehow generational wealth still exists in the form of real-estate, How do you buy a house on Earth in Star Trek? How do you obtain any kind of private property outside of basic necessities? A ship? We actually discussed this topic in philosophy... how it is often cited as a socialist utopia, but largely nothing is explained, everything is hand-waved, and it doesn't hold up to any scrutiny. We'll never achieve anything like this.
