Four examples of the same model and four different test results - in other words - the fourth generation of the Honda CR-V. First, we check the crucial thing, that is the ability of the rear axle to push the car - MTs have a serious problem with this, ATs cope better. Then, in the side test, we check the rear axle deleay - here again, ATs are better but only the 1.6 i-DTEC BiTurbo 9AT version engages (slightly) the rear axle in the off-throttle position.

@@Adi-s2i I guess, it does not matter how advanced the gearbox, but the gear ratio definitely has an effect. zf9hp has a very short first gear.

rear axle delay was supposedly mitigated in 2015 lifting. What I am missing in this comparison is 2.0 VTEC with old 5-gear AT. With less gears it may be worse in distributing momentum from a standstill, than this 9-gear AT paired with the diesel.
@mf____Ай бұрын
@@a1naruth I guess, it is mainly coming down to the much higher crawl ratio of the zf9, that acts almost like a low range. (Twenty-something as I recall). Also the much torquier diesel has it's benefits. Other than that the programming of the AWD/rear diff is probably the same on the 2 versions. This week I completed some tests on snowy hill slopes and it could climb them slowly and steadily while I guess the older AT either cannot spin the wheel or the wheels start spinning out.

Absolutely brilliant and thanks for all the effort you have put in to this (and all the people who've lent the cars :) ). I must admit my Honda CR-v 2014 (manual 2.2 i-Dtec) model is coming up to ten years old, and watching all the stories go back and forth (the famous Swedish test, fix then removing the fix), it's sad that a company like Honda (even with main dealer service bulletins) never really got to grips with this. What I can say (not disputing your tests), is that, running M+S tyres Michelin Tour Latitude HPs / Cross Climate SUV's on it over the years it's got me around Switzerland and Scotland in Winter without issue, it's got me through muddy (really muddy!) fields in the UK in winter, and it's trimmed the car up when I hit black ice. I'm going to run the car to the final big bill however, it's at a 145,000 miles (233354 KM) and it still drives as the day I picked it up. But thanks for doing this.

I like the comparison. It would be fun to see this on the Highlander generations. I've had the first 3 and it's always seemed like the 2nd gen with full time 4wd does the best in our harsh winters.

In other markets, this generation of CRV can be had with a 2.4L engine. The pre-facelift version was a 5 speed automatic and the facelifted model was a CVT. Maybe the programming of the AWD system was also different. Great video as always 🔥

Wish us over here in the USA was able to get a manual 4WD CRV after 2006. I had an 04 4WD CRV EX MT. Had to get rid of it due to rust and rot. To add, 4/AWD CRVs need Helical Diff or LSD center and NOT rely on electrical assists.

Nice test thank you! This somehow resonates with my experiences, I managed to unstuck myself from deep mud and snow many times with the 1.6 AT AWD. I guess, it is mostly because of the huge low-level torque and the very short first gear of the AT version ~4.7. Only difference I had is that for me the awd engages at start when I put to sport mode, first wheel does not slip at all.
