Damn ! I had thi 2001 model and did not know it was so big difference vs 2007 model... till I think that Haldex 3 rocks ! Have in Outlander II. Making god job. Really.

The thing about the Torsen center differential is that it generates a locking torque proportional to the drive torque only within the locking range of the differential. As the locking range for the Torsen Type A center differential on this allroad is from 77/23-23/77 (approx. 3.5:1 torque bias ratio on both axles as this is a symmetrical center diff), we should already know that the Torsen will not get the car off the rollers (with either front or rear wheels on rollers) by itself as at least 23% of the drive force must be supported by the axle with the lower coefficient of friction. We also know that the coefficient of friction on the rollers is essentially zero as no drive torque can be supported. Additional deceleration will need to be applied by the EDL control in the form of brake application until the force applied equals the amount the gearbox output torque exceeds the locking range of the differential (since the entire usable drive force needs to be supported by only one axle). So in this case, 23% of the drive torque would have to be wasted to lock up the differential and 77% would be available for forward propulsion. Additionally, the literature from Audi states that the Torsen diff will not transfer drive torque to the tractive axle in the event that the opposite axle is raised off the ground or on a surface with near 0 friction coefficient. The purpose of the Torsen differential is to reduce the frequency of required EDL activation in normal driving on slick surfaces, not to deal with the worst case scenario depicted in this video. With that said, all of the above is not a criticism of the Audi Quattro system as I know that the system works well in the real world. My only reason for mentioning the facts stated above is to remind people that no road going vehicle without diff locks will make it off 3 rollers without intervention from EDL (or whatever the respective manufacturer refers to EDL as). So before anyone comments that the Quattro system is crap, we should remember that the mechanical parts of road going AWD systems for the most part are not capable of coping with the worst case scenario (the 3 wheel slip test) without electronic intervention. Consequently, it is really the programming of the traction control system that determines how a vehicle will cope in the 3 wheel test. And also remember that a manufacturer should not program their ESC to simply perform well in the 3 wheel test as they must take into account allowable slip values. Programming the system to be too aggressive could also cause tire scrub, increased tire and brake wear, as well increased brake temperature, and drivetrain windup in extreme circumstances. Lastly, as ESC is relatively new and both of these vehicles are older, we should not expect them to perform as well as newer vehicles since programming of ESC was not as sophisticated when these vehicles were manufactured.

Having owned an allroad and seeing what Quattro used to be it makes me so sad that they nerfed the system. This video pretty much sums up my driving experience with it. When not flummoxed it was great but even a little slippage and you’re done (sans having good tires in certain situations). I adored everything about it but if I were to get another I would definitely love to retrofit some older locking diff system to it cause how can you tout having “legendary awd” when this clearly shows otherwise.

100% This is just embarrassing for a once, industry leading AWD system. I owned a '95 A6 Quattro Avant, and it was amazing in the snow. It was the last year of the manually lockable rear differential.

@@austinado16 Actually torsen could have been different, A in your A6 and B in Allroad above but I am not sure about it as B debuted in 1994. Anyway, it doesn't make much difference, slightly different TBR between A & B.

Audi is 4x4 TORSEN system, Volvo is AWD haldex which means permanent front drive, and rear drive added when needed. AWD is not 4x4.

The torsen in the audi only works if there is some resistance on the wheels without traction. In this generation the tc was programmed around use of that center torsen. The system relied on the fact that it could mechanically lock itself. The rollers don't provide enough resistance for the torsen to work. The system works great in slow but struggled on ice in my experience of owning one.

@@4x4.tests.on.rollers sorry I should have said torque split. Either way it doesn't work well with some resistance on both ends of it. My mazda with a torsen rear diff use to get stuck if one of the rear wheels lifted off the ground when going up a drive way. Applying the brakes slightly would help the car move.

Unfortunately this isn't an actual road condition. "Climbing" up a two inch high roller, is not the same as encountering snow, or ice. To be more realistic, the rollers need to be the same level as the pavement. Also 01, 02 V70XC models have a viscous coupler that transfers the power from the angle gear, to the rear diff, but they do not have a limited slip in the differential case. 03 and up XC70 use a Haldex unit.

Never had problems getting through deep snow, driving on changing surfaces with ice and snow or having control over the car with quattro. Problems only arise, where you need to be really slow and have the most unfortunate conditions possible.

As I see from the description, the audi is manual transmission? In this case, did You switch on the low range from the gear lever? This also alters the EDL functioning and lowers the max permissable wheel speed difference by approx x10 at low speeds.

I've once heard that one should apply the brakes slightly whilst accelerating with Torsen-AWD in order to make it work properly. Is there any truth to that, or is it just false information? Additionally, do you know which sort of AWD that Volvo has? Thanks in advance :)

Brake trick should help in cars with no TC/EDL etc. These systems should do that instead of driver. However - we tried that in Audi V8 with rear torsen differential - it didn't help: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iGKTo2Zva7GUntE We also tried that in Toyota Rav4 - didn't help neihter: kzbin.info/www/bejne/d4GcaZyEdseojKs PS. Volvo uses viscous coupling or haldex - that is to be checked today :)

Der Audi ist durch das Torsendifferential klar im Nachteil, das ist bekannt.Wenn an einer Achse fast kein Gripp vorhanden ist, hat das Torsendifferential grosse Probleme.👆👆👆👆 Viele Grüsse aus Germany

Starsze systemy quattro mowa o torsenie wcale nie są takie dobre jedynie plusem jest ich bezawaryjność bo są proste w budowie i mechaniczne ale za to napędy typu haldex czy xdrive są o wiele bardziej skuteczne (inteligentne).

@Zenonas Not torsions but TORSEN and not halldex but HALDEX. Audi has torsen and haldex, Volkswagen also has torsen and haldex. Torsen isn't patented by Audi. Volvo in my test has VISCOUS COUPLING, not haldex. The video you linked is the most manipulated marketing video ever, every driver who has ever driven the car on snow sees that.

Your can named Halldex, or any other name, but principal is electronic. Not mechanical. Yes, new Audi have haldex.

@@zenonas7941 There's nothing unique in quattro systems, they are using the same solutions as other manufacturers, including torsen. New Audi have haldex, old Audi have haldex to - they are using it since 1998 so that;s already 23 years.

Volvo ruszało zarówno delikatnie, jak i trochę mocniej. Audi nie na pełnym gazie, tylko jak w mocniejszych podejściach Volvo, na niskich obrotach EDL nie reaguje.

Загнать Audi и Volvo в грязь, у Volvo отключится муфта от перегрева , а у Audi такого не случиться . По факту у Audi не убиваемый полный привод. Нужно просто уметь им пользоваться

Nie wiem czemu tu tak wypadło audi, ale miałem A6 C5 quatto i dużo lepiej sobie radziła. Teraz mam S60 AWD i nadrabia ASR . Po za tym haldex jest sprzęgłem, więc odpowiada tylko za dołączenie tyłu

@Igor Dokładnie jak napisałeś głównym plusem to bezawaryjność ale napędy ze sprzęgłem i dobrą elektroniką są skuteczniejsze dzięki temu lepiej rozdzielają moc na poszczególne koła co daje lepszą trakcję, dlatego audi quattro kolejne generacje posiadają również sprzęgła.

Была у меня такая вольво 2007г и ауди была 2002 такая. Так вот друзья без всяких тестов скажу, зимой когда снег, лёд резко если хочешь поехать на вольво трогаешся как на трамвае, а на ауди жаришь как положено. Вот и весь тест.... Да и по всем остальным моментам, вольво мягко говоря не дотягивает. Г....но одним словом это вольво. Только ауди ✌️

Audi driver must accelerate harder, otherwise EDL doesn't wotk at all. Volvo driver doesn't need to accelerate hard cause TC kicks in right away.

Musisz wiedzieć też o tym, że napędy w autach osobowych nie są projektowane do jazdy terenowej. Auta te też są wiekowe i nic nam nie wiadomo o stanie technicznym tych napędów.

No niestety taki test nie przekłada się na faktyczne zdolności w trudnym terenie. Quattro to stały napęd. Na rolkach może i wygląda głupio, ale to nie jest naturalne środowisko samochodu. Swoją drogą spore znaczenie ma tutaj silnik - czy przypadkiem Volvo nie było w dieslu, a Audi w benzynie? Diesel ma większy moment obrotowy z dołu, haldexa i agresywniejsze systemy ASR i ESP. Może i na rolkach się sprawdza, ale w praktyce w ciężkim śniegu Volvo będzie płużyło, a Audi będzie jechało.

После такие роликов к вашим тестам нет доверия. Взяли самый ушатанный аллрод в мире у которого вместо торсена глилой арбуз. Противно смотреть на такое, особенно если учесть то что являюсь владельцем такого же аллрода, только прлностью технически исправного и поведение у него совершенно другое. Теперь все ваши тесты для меня под большим сомнением, а репутация это то что теряется на раз-два

Everything is OK with the car, everything is OK with torsen. If you think that torsen is broken then apparently you don't know how torsen works, this may help: kzbin.info/www/bejne/i53ReHpqm9eNbJo Other thing is EDL, especially the one combined with ESP - it works this way, you can see in many Audi cars from that period. Полностью согласен, у меня правда с6 кузов но в реале даже на на подьемнике все 4 колеса вращаются с одинаковой скоростью, здесь електроника совсем не помогает

А на видео как будто у машины тормозные колодки стерты в ноль, потому что никакого подтормаживания не происходит. У казахов автоблогеров был крутой тест и там аллроды всех дернули, и волв и субарей

@@Taganskii Brakes are working, there is braking, otherwise car would fail lateral, diagonal and one axle tests. Braking is enough for situation when two wheels are missing traction but it is not enough for situation when three wheels are missing traction. It is first generation of EDL combined with ESP and it is not as good as later generations. The technological bottleneck back in those years meant ESP/TCS implementation on 4WD systems was still on infancy, but that Audi still substituted real diffs with EDLs... Had Audi kept the front/rear LSDs and let them work in conjunction with the EDL then the test results could've been a lot different......

Weak statement, The mean things about roller test is their traction control system NOT 4WD/AWD system. Audi traction control system has improved a lot since early 2000s and no smart people will buy a 2005 audi. Shows either You are not smart, or you just hate Audi, or both.

@@averagedriving3979 That's not entirely correct. First torque split goes through center diff or clutch-pack, in many cases without traction control intervention. The next step are front and rear diffs and then traction control.
