One of my best sea fishing sessions this season! I headed north into Northumberland after Storm Arwen beach fishing for cod, conditions were the best I'd had for cod fishing this winter- big tides, large swells and dirty water. Plenty of cod landed including the biggest cod I've landed for 2 seasons.
Tackle-
Beach Rod- Any Fish Any Where GB FS Pro, 14ft rod, 120-200g
Reel- Penn Battle III 8000 LC
Braid- Daiwa J-Braid, 79lb
Rig- Pennel Paternoster
Bait- Yellow Tail Lug Worm
Tackle Trayz- tackletrayz.wixsite.com/tackl...
Follow me on Instagram- bit.ly/slippyinstagram
Affiliate Links-
Waterhaul Sunglasses-
Cornish polarised sunglasses made from ghost fishing gear washed up on the shore- 15% off anything on the site- waterhaul.co/slippylimpets15

Well done I'm on the west of Ireland in Clare, it's not common to land a cod from the beaches her they're mostly rolling surf beaches. I'd say the cod are there but it's a lot of dedication, patience and trying different bait's and techniques.

We do get them on the beaches here but the conditions need to be right, just like in this video. Luckily we can head to the kelpy rock marks when the fishing is poor off the beaches and normally pick one or two up. We don't get the bass like you guys do though

My two biggest cod where both on small ish blow lug baits. But equally I've have 1lb cod swallow squid and lug bricks. In my experience your best fishing big and small, they like both. Only negative about fishing small for cod is smaller fish are likely to take it first.
@SlippyLimpets
@SlippyLimpets 2 жыл бұрын
Same here but, up until this season, I've mainly fished with worm baits. There seems to be loads of small fish around this year so wanted to try and deter the smaller fish by using bigger baits.
@reiverone
@reiverone 2 жыл бұрын
Well Nathan, you can't ask for more than that, a fish a chuck. How lucky are you not to get happed up with weed when the anglers to your left were struggling. You say you're not a good caster, proves you're getting far enough lol. Great session mate. All you need now is a night vision camera.
@SlippyLimpets
@SlippyLimpets 2 жыл бұрын
It's a funny beach in that respect, I've been those two anglers before and moving 50m up or down the beach can be the difference of it being fishable or not. Night vision camera is a cracking idea! I've found in the past that shining massive lights can affect the fishing so don't turn my light up too much, night vision would solve that!

Nice wee session Nathan.. Just wondering if u puncture your sqid after fulling it up with cart.. I get my knife a stick a few small holes in it and it let's the juices come out a bit.. Works will.. Anyway as usual love the vids.. Cheers mate..

Aye, it was an enjoyable one. I tend to slice halfway down the body, to wrap it up easier, and the cart tends to leak out of the gap left after whipping the squid on the hook. Think if I didn't slice the body then I'd definitely stick some holes in the squid to let the cart out. Glad you liked it and as always, thanks mate

Welcome to the channel and sorry to hear about your arthritis! Cart is made up from the insides of brown crabs, slightly salted. It's a lethal bait! Yes you did! I've been a catch and release angler for years and have only just started keeping the odd fish, guess I've still got some things to learn there. Glad you liked the vid and thanks for the comment👍🎣

Lovely picture perfect cod there, clean sand fish built like that are the prettiest cod you will ever catch. It isn't big though mate, 10lb is the starting line for big North Sea cod :) Good lesson for you there on the baits, i rarely use worm these days over clean sand and most of the time bigger is better for the bigger fish. If you up your hooks to 6/0's you will catch less of those sub 2lb fish and the distance lost on big 6/0 pennel baits is made up for with the extra longer lasting scent trail from the bigger bait. That will be really important this winter as there aren't a lot of decent fish inshore again all the way from your neck of the woods up to here. Can only hope they are on the huge herring shoals and it isn't going down the pan like many other areas. Keep at it, Northumberland a good area to get a good double.

No disrespect. If you listen 17:20, he has dropped down to 2/0, from his usual 5 or 6/0.... Do all kinds of N/E fishing, in fresh and sea, for 60 years, l must be just unlucky, count on one hand how many cod, 10 plus, I've had off the N/E, or any beach, over the moon with anything under that. Plenty on the boat, but that's a different story. Stay safe

@@petergarbutt9521 I did hear that, i have met Nathan and i have an idea he knows about my cod fishing background so will take the comment as intended. You might be unlucky, i have a mate that's never had a double in over 20 years of North Sea cod fishing, in the same time i have had 32 doubles, so maybe i am just lucky :) Apologies,just checked diary and it's 33, not 32.

Robert used to fish for the Scottish national team and has a memory like a database- he can remember the fish, the bait, the rig, wave height, state of tide, the air pressure...quite mesmerising. I'm with you though, in 10 years I can count on one finger how many doubles I've had from the Northumberland shore, and think they're not as common as they used to be. You're right, I did drop down to 2/0 but only for the straight worm baits, the canny cod was caught on a 5/0 with a 2/0 pennel and a big squid bait. I do know of a 13lb 8oz caught last year from the same beach I was fishing in this vid last year so they are about, probably just 1/1000 though

@@SlippyLimpets There is definitely something changing the last few years. I am hoping it is the huge amount of herring in the north sea. They go in cycles and when the numbers drop hopefully the cod fishing will pick up again. It's too easy for them to sit under herring all year, little effort required. Matches are being won in good conditions up here with as little as 15lb and heaviest fish sub 7lb.Unheard of 4 plus years ago, i have seen the top ten weighing in around 400lb in an Arbroath match but that hasn't happened for a good few years now. A Fife club match was won with a single 4lb ish coalie (a good shore fish to be fair) at the weekend, not a single cod between 14 anglers in a good sea.There just isn't any number of fish inshore again this year. Boat anglers got odd glimpses of really good fishing early on the summer past but the fish didn't hang around so there are fish out there somewhere. I can remember it being pretty poor around 2008/9 winter but nothing like it currently is. That bag you had there is better than any of the club matches in the north east in the last couple of weeks so you know you are fishing well and doing the right thing,keep at it and you will get a lump. I'm sitting it out on big baits as usual this year but with low numbers of fish over 5lb it's going to be a long winter.
@SlippyLimpets
@SlippyLimpets 2 жыл бұрын
I hope you're right about the numbers improving. I was reminiscing with my mate on Saturday night about sessions where actually we sat down and had a 20 minute break from fishing, due to the high number of 5lb+ fish we were catching. Alas, we haven't had session like that since about 2017. I'm with you there on the big baits, there seems to be loads of small fish around but I'm not really interested in catching them. Hope you get amongst them mate👍🎣
