I’m from Iowa and the gentleman in Iowa developed the maid rite sandwich. Some get maid rites and sloppy joes mixed up. In 1926, the Maid-Rite sandwich was born! Fred Angell started the concept in Muscatine, Iowa. Fred began to franchise his idea, selling the rights to Newton, Iowa in 1927 and Marshalltown, Iowa in 1928. Cliff Taylor purchased the 1928 franchise for the sum of $300.

You are so correct, sloppy joe's and Maid Rites are not the same. Maid Rites have their own special taste. I live in Maid Rite country; the restaurant, in Muscatine on Hwy 61 has a special display of vintage photos of the original place. They have specials everyday...M-F.

Hello Tom and Melissa. Just finished watching the video. Thanks for the recipe. It's a little too late now to make today, but I'm thinking for next Sunday football. I revised my recipe to add the chili powder; am sure it will add a lot of flavor. Also made a note to add the garlic. I can't believe I actually have a recipe that didn't call for garlic!! Recipes don't HAVE to call for garlic to add it; I just never thought of putting it in my sloppy joes. I will definitely add it next time. Thank you also Melissa for all your work. Another wonderful down home fall recipe. We, too, like them served open faced. Sometimes you might find something crunchy (favorite is Fritos Chili Cheese chips) first on the bun then some cheese then the hot sloppy Joe mixture. Of course, the grandkids started this. I had set out some Fritos as a side. One started adding them to the bun. Another said "Wait I've got an idea* and grabbed a slice of American cheese and put it all together and that's how our " Sloppy Sloppy Joes were born. The kids do sometimes eat it like a sandwich ~ they like to bite down and hear the crunch. And they're happy with American cheese. Our adult versions occasionally add the chips but it's the variety of cheeses that make it so interesting. Any cheese that melts well, or pretty well will work. We've tried mozzarella, Jack, provolone, goat cheese, crumbled brie even Swiss. The Swiss didn't melt well. Neither does Cheddar. That's when we tried the grated melts that have cream cheese in them. They work quite well and get good and gooey. Once my oldest grandson (22) ignored all that and just spread a bit of A1 on the bottom bun before adding the ground beef mixture. He said it was good. I haven't tried that yet.
@comesitatmytable9044 Жыл бұрын
We haven't tried the A1 but I think it would be good on a Sloppy Joe. We love them with cheese, too. We like all kinds so it would be hard to pick a favorite cheese for this. And we almost always have chips as a side item! Thank you so much for watching the video! We appreciate it very much!

I use celery in mine instead of peppers. That might be a regional thing, idk. I’ve never eaten the canned store bought kind. I got my recipe out of an old BH&G cookbook I got when I was first married, I learned to cook from that small magazine type cookbook.
