Shitposting culture and an impenetrable vernacular of meme garbage did permeate the Christchurch killer's manifesto, his behaviour on the live-stream while he was waiting in his car, the decoration of his weapons etc. Sam Harris almost touches on something interesting when he brings up the idea of trolling taken to its logical conclusion, as if these edgy alt-right people internalize the jokes until they become genuine (more likely they just drop the facade of joking and double-down on their real beliefs and anxieties), but then he draws the completely wrong conclusion from the premise. He thinks it's all irony and no substance. You can't ironically shoot people. I've seen the cam footage from Christchurch - he was fully committed to killing as many people as he could, sweeping room to room and peppering the huddled masses in the corners over and over just to make sure he got them all. He left and returned and doubled-checked some of the rooms and caught stragglers trying to escape. He didn't want to one-up some blue checkmark on twitter with a scathing rejoinder, he wanted to annihilate a community of people. He wasn't "trolling", he was acting in earnest. If he somehow wasn't driven by an ideology, he was at the very least deeply psychologically unwell. If he was trolling, he would've ended the stream prematurely and left it ambiguous about what happened, let his audience panic, instead of filming and broadcasting live mass murder over the internet. So is Sam Harris being dishonest, or he is completely out to fucking lunch? I don't know why I typed this out.

Bluehawk2008 brilliant point and a distinction Harris can’t make. This Christchurch shooter didn’t kill 50 people ironically.

@RetiredInThailand5 жыл бұрын
@@BadBadManners He's a total fraud ... take his 'thought experiments' ... he totally misuses that term both as a scientist and a philosopher (something he claims to be both.) In science, a 'thought experiment' requires the same rigor as any other scientific experiment, ie. it must be falsifiable, and if there is a case of where experiment does not align with prediction then it's invalid example: Einstein and his general theory of relativity. He came to this theory via a thought experiment, where he started off with the known fact that the speed of light was constant and from there drew a valid, uncontestable conclusion after conclusion leading to the only possible conclusion that time and space were not constant; they adjusted based on the speed/velocity of the observer. In philosophy, a thought experiment is for provoking discussion. There is no 'answer' to the thought experiment, there is just a set of possibilities and people are left to their own personal opinion and moral makeup as to which, if any of the possibilities they would consider the better option/moral stance. Example 'The trolly problem' ... there is no right answer as to whether it is better to passively let 2 people die or take an action that would save the two people but kill one other person. Harris likes to take situations that might be considered 'philosophical thought experiments' and pretend that they are as 'fact-finding' as scientific thought experiments ... the man is a charlatan and a snake-oil salesman. That anyone pays him any attention as some kind of 'intellectual' is amazing, and an indictment of the (below) 'average IQ' of (almost entirely) young males.

The idea that restricting access to weapons is bad because "the criminals still have guns" is complete bullshit. It doesn't take a good guy with a gun to stop a bad guy with a gun. Firstly, responding to a gunshot with another gunshot just increases the chances of someone getting shot. And Secondly, *it's the same fucking concept that was the basis of the cold war* - both sides going "Well, they've got guns, so we need machine guns" "well, they've got machineguns, we need miniguns" "well, if they're gonna use miniguns, we need to use a mortar" "well, if they're gonna mortar us, we'd better launch some missiles" "Well, if you're using missiles, I'm getting a nuke"

The actual side of reason where crappy lowbrow insults and appeals to authority are not considered valid arguments to support the basis of a supposition. Want to actually be smart, stop listening to Sam Harris and learn to actually form a valid argument, rather than pretend that getting laughs like Sam does by backhanded insults to your opponent are somehow 'winning' the argument in any real dialogue where the goal is actual facts, and reason, rather than some kind of dark cathartic mob laughter, that points very clearly to a hatred for the opposition that is not based on reason, but fear, or racism. Hence why it is no accident that Sam's prominence rose up at the same time that islamophobia, and white nationalism sky-rocketed in the west. My favorite racist line, "It can't be racism, because it is prejudice only against a religion.". One that is semantically incorrect as racism is described as prejudice against a race or ethnicity and religion is most often the strongest definer of one's ethnicity, and two regardless of semantics, there is a reason why the law states it is ILLEGAL to push for a prejudice against a person based on race, gender, and religion in all western nations... But that never stopped a good Sam Harris neophyte from thinking he had free license to treat 1/3 of the world's population as less then, as subhuman and as the 'motherload of bad ideas', rather than as normal people, with if anything a track record of clearly less violence when normalized for sociological/economic factors. But no, not for Sam, he trained his flock well to in this area at least mimic white nationalists to a tee. Pick a few individuals and apply the guilt of their actions to the entire population. Just like you see black americans getting blamed for any crime by any person of color. Then now, of course, when it is a 'white male' suddenly sociological factors matter again. If you cannot see just how stupid that gross logic is, you might as well go join white nationalists because you are at that point just a white nationalist with identity issues...

I like Majority Report and Michael Brooks show, but this is actually out of context. To echo what others have correctly pointed out - Harris is reading from an essay he wrote in 2013 describing different categories of mass killers, not talking about El Paso. The clip Brooks has used is when Harris adds that killers have employed online in-jokes and troll memes in their manifestos - an uncontroversial point based on the inclusion of the Navy Seal Copypasta in the Christchurch killers' manifesto - this is actually something which Majority Report acknowledged following Christchurch. Later in the clip Harris does in fact say El Paso "attests to a rise in white supremacists". I think you could argue that Harris is willing to extend psychoanalysis to white supremacists in a way he doesn't with Islamist supremacists, but that doesn't change the fact that this clip is out of context. I think it's also pernicious of Brooks to deploy the lazy tactic of using irony to distance himself from criticism at 2:13. "I know everything with Sam is out of context"...then takes Harris out of context. It's cheeky, they should stop doing it.

bluetrain93 How is taking Harris out of context?? The El Paso massacre has nothing to do with his apologist views of the Christchurch massacre. He said it had nothing to do with a sincere ideology that’s just untrue. He is an apologist for white supremacy. He just apologized for Christchurch. But you can’t defend him on the Christchurch point so you must obfuscate by saying Harris bringing up a different situation is more context. That’s not more context, that is just Harris contradicting himself.
@bluetrain935 жыл бұрын

bluetrain93 that’s a Tu quoque fallacy or appeal to hypocrisy.
@bluetrain935 жыл бұрын
@@treybaker5716 That doesn't answer my question but okay. I take your point that it's not out of context; I take that back. His comments on Christchurch remain regardless of their context. I would argue it's perhaps more disingenuous of Brooks - the fact remains that the clip Brooks uses is Harris reading from a 2013 essay, and adding an aside on how an idea from the said essay could be relevant to Christchurch. Leaving that out changes the framing of the argument quite a lot. Also show me where Harris said Christchurch "had nothing to do with sincere ideology". He actually said the Christchurch manifesto contained "to some degree" an element of troll culture. Regarding the Tu quoque fallacy, an appeal to hypocrisy is a reasonable appeal to make. The point is it's not apologising for white supremacy to point out the Christchurch manifesto had troll segments, such as the Navy Seal Copypasta. The Majority Report knows that, hence their admitting it in an earlier episode, and you know that too. You can google a hundred articles online about the Christchurch manifesto's trolling aspects - are they all apologists for white supremacy too? How is any of this controversial?

The manifesto is more than 60 pages, about 10% of which is flippant and "satirical" while the rest is hardcore white nationalist rhetoric about Europe being destroyed by immigrants and that somehow murdering Muslims in new Zealand would alleviate that. I expected that from the manifesto, but the video was much much worse. The terrorist shows zero hesitation or second thoughts about what he is doing, and maximizes the amount of death and pain possible. Kids, elderly, wounded people trying to escape; he just guns them down as if they weren't human. I dislike Sam Harris a lot, and I think he's a racist, but there is a point he made which is half true. These people really do come from the "shitposting" internet subculture, and they reference memes and inside jokes while spreading the most hateful rhetoric or ccommiting horrible crimes. After the terrorist was done murdering more than 50 people, he makes a reference to pewdiepie, for example. Sams point fails because he reduces it all to that, and in reality these people are strongly racist, strongly ideologically motivated. Neo fascists hide behind online shitposting, but in truth hold terroristic beliefs.
