I’ve made four pair of socks-one up and 3 down. I have started doing this. I like my toes to have room so I start out with size 2. I change to size 1 until the heel. I use size 2 for the heel for room to get my foot in and out. I change to size 1 to go up the leg. They fit wonderfully for me! Have you ever tried this if your foot has a difficult time getting into the sock? Just a thought! ❤️😁 I really like your videos! Thanks!

Because you need sturdier socks, do you always use a broader ribbing? Do you feel they’re more durable or are they just “handier” with wearing boots?
@PurlTogether5 жыл бұрын
I prefer the most dense fabric that results from 9-10 spi because they wear better. I don't have to darn my socks as frequently. I just like the 2x2 ribbing because I find 1x1 to be tedious. It's just my personal preference.

Is this a good choice for my first attempt at socks?
@PurlTogether6 жыл бұрын
Yes! If you're comfortable with knitting in general and its a very good choice if you've had a little bit of experience using smaller sized needles. If you're a little intimidated by the smaller needles, you could also consider the Rose City Rollers series on my channel also.
@linaadams1385 жыл бұрын
Hi there. I'm gonna give this a try. The thing is, I have a lot of sock yarn that calls for size 2 needle. Does that matter? If not, then I gotta play with gauge to get the right needle size to get 36 per 4 inches, right?
@PurlTogether5 жыл бұрын
The needle size recommendation on the label is just a starting point. You need to swatch to determine how many stitches per inch gives you the fabric that you like with any given yarn/needle combination. I might prefer 9 sts per inch, but you might be great with 7 or 8 depending upon the yarn you're using. Swatching is key. Thanks for watching!

Hi! Thanks for the video! Quick question. I am doing one for my mom and her circumference of the middle of her ler is 42cm. From the chart does ir mean that i have to have 144sts?
@PurlTogether Жыл бұрын
Are you measuring the widest part of her calf? Are you knitting longer leg socks?
@aribeironovaes Жыл бұрын
@@PurlTogether Good question, i am not sure 😂 It is my first socks. I will try to measure lower or compare with other sock she has. Thanks!
@dionesauve13084 жыл бұрын
About how long is the leg portion with the cuff? I have bigger calves so want to make sure I make it bi enough to fit. It looked like in the into video you knit flat, but it's in the round now, so for you would you potentially have more or less stitches in an inch in the round?
@PurlTogether4 жыл бұрын
It's knitted in the round from the very start. If you have larger calves, you'll need to measure the circumference of your leg at the top of where you want the sock to be, then measure again at the ankle and account for the difference in stitches needed by doing some evenly spaced decreases. You'll want to swatch to determine how many stitches per inch you're knitting, then you'll be able to determine your cast on number.
@dionesauve13084 жыл бұрын
@@PurlTogether sorry I wasnt very clear. When you did your swatch in the into video, was it flat or in the round? You talked about having different tension depending on flat or round, but thought your swatch was knit flat and then the sock is obviously knit in the round.
@PurlTogether4 жыл бұрын
It may have been a flat swatch. I mentioned in some previous video (not necessarily this one) that I don't often have much of a difference between swatching flat and in the round, however may people do. You may not know if do or don't until you've been knitting for quite a while, so it's best to swatch in the way that you'll knit your project. The swatch is supposed to be a smaller representation of the larger finished project.
@dionesauve13084 жыл бұрын
@@PurlTogether I am almost done my first sock and I am about to run out of yarn. 😥 will be starting over. My sock is also too loose. I am getting 8.5 stitches per inch and using 2.25mm needles. The biggest part of my foot is 9". How do I figure out how many I should be casting on? Is there a simple math calculation?
@aliciakearney75735 жыл бұрын
I can see that this sock has a pattern that will allow you to add stitches for a larger size, on the cup of tea socks I noticed because of the pattern you had to add 16 stitches to jump a size. How can a beginning knitter decide what to add to go up a size on sock patterns that do not give sizes? The knitting doesn't confuse me, the sizing does. I seem to do best with 72 stitches for myself, but I have mostly used a size 2 needle up to now. My swatch for this sock didn't seem much different, about 9 sts per inch. I'm only a recent knitter and so far all my socks but one have fit with 72 stitches and 2 needles, except the last pair, they are baggy and I'm using them for slippers. I have no idea why I had a different outcome. sigh. Can you post the sock calculator you mentioned? Maybe that will make me see whatever it is I'm not getting. Thank you
@PurlTogether5 жыл бұрын
In order to size up or down, you'll want to know your stitches per inch with any given yarn / needle combination. But then you have to decide it you want negative ease or not, meaning, do you want the socks to fit more tightly? if so, subtract 5-10% of the stitches to get the cast on number. Then, if there is a chart or a pattern repeat, you'll need to be mindful of the multiples required there. You seem to be knitting pretty tightly if you're using a US 2 (2.75mm) and getting 9 spi. The differing outcome on your last pair could be due to several factors. The type of yarn? Did you swatch again? Here is the sock calculator: www.thedietdiary.com/blog/lucia/530
@aliciakearney75735 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the calculator, very cool. Yes I do knit and crochet tighter than most, but the nine stitches per inch were on this sock, my swatch was with sock yarn and #1 needles. I've never used either such small yarn or #1 needles before because I taught myself to knit socks using baby yarn & #2's. Now I'm obsessed so I bought “real” sock yarn, LOL, and smaller needles. P.S. love your FB page.

how can u tell when your next row starts? i didn't see a stitch marker or anything so what do u do?
@PurlTogether5 жыл бұрын
Since I'm using the magic loop technique, a marker isn't necessary. The stitches are divided in half so it's easy to tell where the beginning of the round is because of where the cast on tail is located. Hope that makes sense. Thanks for watching!

I just finished the toe for this sock (I'm knitting toe up 'cause I'm the boss of my knitting!😂😂😂) and I wanted to know when you knit toe up socks can you make the toe longer some how? I have smallish feet with a wider ball and higher instep but longer toes and I'd like for the knitted toe to cover the full length of my toes. Please help?
@PurlTogether4 жыл бұрын
Have you seen my playlist for toe up socks? In those videos, I'm knitting them two at a time, (TAAT) however, you can certainly knit them one at a time. You'll just increase as much as needed for the circumference of your feet, then just knit in stockinette stitch as far as you'd like for the toe before beginning whatever pattern you've chosen.
@alejandrarosales78364 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tip really like your videos they're very helpful and always my go to when I have questions... I've just finished the toe and at first it looked fine I have an 8inch circumference and my knit gauge was 8 stitches per inch I casted 64 stitches which should've been the right size but now it seems too big unless I pull a bit over my foot is this right?

Do you have instructions for using 5 DPN’s, from the cuff down?
@PurlTogether6 жыл бұрын
I don't, but actually the process is the same, you're just substituting using 2 dpns for the top of the foot needle, and 2 more dpns for the sole stitches. Does that make sense?

At 9:39 I'm still using the needle facing me or closest to me as the working needle. When I said "turn it" I'm referring to bringing around the right hand needle in order to begin knitting with it. Is that what you're referring to? If not, can you tell me at what point in the video specifically is the confusing part?

How do you cast on for two socks if you want to knit the socks two at a time?
@PurlTogether6 жыл бұрын
I prefer to cast them on individually, then put them on my longer circular needle together, after I've gotten the cast on and a row or two knitted and established.
@LJHill596 жыл бұрын
@@PurlTogether I am embarking on my first two at a time on two circulars and would love to knit this pattern. You're teaching skills, calm voice and gentle demeanor keeps me coming back to your channel. You mentioned, casting on your socks and knitting a couple of rounds before placing them to work 2 at a time on 2 circulars(?) or am I misunderstanding? Could you make a quickie video of transferring your 2 cuff down socks onto 2 circulars please.
@PurlTogether6 жыл бұрын
@@LJHill59 I don't have two-at-a-time socks going at the moment, but you'd simply cast on one, then the other, knit a few rows, then slip them both onto a longer circular needle. You'll just want to be careful to slip the stitches purlwise, so as not to twist them, and be careful to have each sock facing the same way. You might be interested to check out my other playlist where I knit two-at-a-time socks toe-up.
