I recently took a sock class that did a heel with the garter edge and we just picked up the purl bumps on the edge of the heel. It was super simple and easier than 0icking up the chains somewhat.

Hi Jana. I just love, love, love your tutorials on socks! I have tried all the needles recommended for socks. I have used 9” circulars, double pointed needles,magic loop needles & also Addi Flexi flips. My favourite are the Flexi flips, followed by the DPNs. As I used to love knitting socks on just two needles, I feel the Flexi flips resemble to me the closest feel of knitting with just two needles. I follow your tutorials for socks & love the way you take your time & explain the information so well. Thanks for taking the time, it’s really appreciated! Cheers for now & happy farming. 😊❤️😍💕

So glad you talked about swatching. That’s so very helpful. There are patterns but nobody shows you to begin the difficult process of starting to knit socks. Keep that up. We need to figure out what size needle , yarn, foot measurement will be needed. Thanks. Help Ok I was doing good until we got to the heel and heel turn. It would be good if you write it out for those who plan to follow your pattern. Thanks a real big help.

I haven't tried that, but I don't see why not, as long as you're maintaining the clean edge stitch by slipping the first stitch of each row.

We are all the “bosses of our knitting.” We just have to make that our mind set. I’ve been knitting socks for several years now, but when I began one of the things I read in a beginner pattern was this: “Don’t think just do it.” In other words don’t get panicked by things like short rows, etc, just do what it says.

Thank you SO much for your sloth series, I'm a new knitter from France and I've accomplished so much and gained so much confidence thanks to your videos...you are an awesome teacher, and I love your state of mind. I have a question taht might be silly but in this video, when you start the heel turn, you continue to "slip, knit, slip, knit" whereas in the written tutorial and the other video, you only slip the first stitch and knit all the others, so I'm a bit lost. What difference does that make? Thanks a million!
@PurlTogether4 жыл бұрын
Choosing to continue the slip stitch pattern after the heel turn just adds some reinforcement on the bottom of the heel. Your choice. Thanks for watching.

Purl Together Oh, I understand! Thank you very much for taking the time to reply 🤗
@kaysmith45586 жыл бұрын
The heel turn is always the hardest part for me. So, I can just do the heel turn by counting to the middle of the heel then add 2 more stitches then start the decrease, turn to the purl side and slip 1 then purl 5, no matter how many stitches on the heel flap? That's so cool.
@PurlTogether6 жыл бұрын
Yep! The formula works because its just the center of the heel starting point. Then you decrease however many times you need to, to complete the heel turning.

Thank you! I just came across this series and I think it’s grand! I started making this pattern a few days ago and knit the heel flap today... and decided I’m going to redo it. I disliked the garter edge too. I’ve only knit a couple of pairs of socks and knew I was going to have an issue picking up those stitches for the gusset. I was thrilled with your input, it kinda gave me “permission” I needed to redo it. I’m still unsure about breaking the rules and trusting my own instinct with new to me skills.

Just as an fyi for us dpn users, would it be needles 1 & 4 that should be combined for the heel flap?
@PurlTogether5 жыл бұрын
Yes, if your beginning of the round marker is in the center of the back of the heel. Or the heel flap may also be knitted on needles 1 & 2 if your beg of round marker is at the start of the heel flap. Whatever you'd prefer.
@alicedampmanhumel81396 жыл бұрын
I am following your instructions in the video to the letter. I have never made this kind of heel before. I have 64 total stitches, so 32 for the heel. So I knit 32 rows total before I start the turn of the heel? does that mean that I only pick up 16 stitches along the edge for the gusset when I get that far, since every end stitch, both slipped and kbl, equals two rows?
@PurlTogether6 жыл бұрын
Yes! You'll have 16 stitches on the edge! If you have high arches, you may wish to knit 2-4 more rows to give some extra room, but you're right on with your calculation.

@PurlTogether4 жыл бұрын
You're probably knitting on both sides instead of knitting on the right side and purling on the wrong side of the heel flap.
@alicedampmanhumel81396 жыл бұрын
so when you finish turning the heel, you have half the number of stitches that you had on that needle to begin with, right? So I had 32 stitches when I started the heel flap, and when I finished turning, I had 16. Is that right? by the way, I love your videos, and I love the farm stuff, too! :-)
@PurlTogether6 жыл бұрын
The amount of stitches that you have left after turning the heel will depend upon how many stitches you knit across before you begin the short row sequence. Does that make sense?

This is my first attempt and knitting a pair of socks. Is it supposed to be common knowledge that the heel flap is supposed to be half the amount of stitches? The pattern doesn’t say how many stitches to do for the heel flap which is extremely unhelpful.
@PurlTogether3 жыл бұрын
Generally yes. The pattern actually does specify in the beginning that you'll divide your stitches evenly between two needles, then use the stitches on needle 2 for the heel flap. Sometimes I'll make the heel flap slightly wider or narrower depending upon the foot I'm knitting for and the pattern I've chosen.
@IchStrickeGerne3 жыл бұрын
@@PurlTogether thank you!! I do see where the pattern says to divide the stitches evenly, I guess I just didn’t catch on that the divide was for the heel flap and the rest was for the instep and such. I really appreciate the reply - I learned something new today! 😁
