Slow And Risky Seal Rescue

The rescuers had to be very careful. Working close to the seal's mouth puts the rescuers at risk of getting bitten, but it’s a risk they have to take to save the seal from its death trap. We have all the necessary tools for different rescue situations to make sure we remove the entanglement and put the seal through the least amount of pain. 🦭

It's always traumatic for me to see the eyes of these seals. This one was looking like she had been in so much pain that she was just resigned to whatever fate was in store for her. Luckily for her, her fate was in the hands (literally) of the very experienced OCN crew. Including the hands of the youngest crew member who is rapidly becoming very adept! 👍👍❤

She understood, yes, like most badly injured animals do, but humans have slaughtered Cape fur seals for centuries, so they perceive us as predators. Land not being their element, they will always run to the water for safety when we approach.
