I am not a writer in the real sense, but played around with writing in school. So like 6 years ago i was writing a school assembly and reached a part where i couldnt figure out how to start that poem except the vague idea of "terrible things happen to the character but the system isnt built to spare a thought for his catastrophe". So i wrote around it. The rest of it was good so i wanted the start to justify that too. Which just added more pressure. With the deadline upon me, here is the work of art i came up with last minute : "one day the world turned upside down, which didnt matter as it was anyway round" And that my friends is the difference between John Green and me.

I was once in a lecture where our truly spectacular professor was talking about his deep love songwriting. He told us that sometimes when you write you can give yourself chills-how you just know that after trial and error, you’ve finally hit the nail on the head. He recited Bob Dylan’s All Along the Watchtower: “Well, outside in the cold distance, a wildcat did growl. Two riders were approaching and the wind began to howl.” He looked at us for a moment, and then said “You know, when you write something like that, you just call it a day. You can’t beat it.” And after a quiet moment of reflection, he just dismissed class 30 minutes early. I still think about that lecture at least monthly. RIP Prof Wheeler, you were a real one. 🙏🏻😭

My husband and I are both writers and we discuss this often. It sometimes feels like you're not even writing it, as if some force is speaking to you and it's just going through you, through your brain, down your arm, into your hand and splashing out onto the paper. You just sit there like, "how did this happen? Where did this come from?" The words just appear in your head, how is it not supposed to feel spiritual or supernatural? Brains are wild, they never cease to freak me out. Sometimes I have to stop myself from thinking about them too deeply so as not to kickstart an existential crisis a bit too early in the day.

One of my favorite quotes is from Patrick Rothfuss' The Name Of The Wind where a character quotes a play where a guy goes "Upon him i will visit famine and a fire, till all around him desolation rings and all the demons in the outer dark look on amazed and recognize that vengeance is the business of a man." Always gives me chills. Also "You do not know the first note of the misic that moves me"

Not to toot John Green’s horn but there are so many bangers from that book that have really stuck with me since middle school. “Some infinities are bigger than others” comes to mind. Or “Depression is not a side effect of cancer. Depression is a side effect of dying”. Or “you don’t get to choose if you get hurt in this world, but you do have some say in who hurts you”. JG really does bring philosophy to the masses and the laymen and the middle school girls.
