One of the better installation videos I have ever seen. No useless chatter and opinions, just how to get it done. Thanks so much!!

No need to grease the threads on the barrel nut? I've always used some frog lube paste or grease. Also, a hairdryer seems to do the trick for tight fitting rails over the barrel nut.

I've heard that putting grease on stuff would mess up torque values recommended by the manufactures.

This seems like a stupid comment probably but I can't get my barrel nut out of the handguard. It's in there good. Any idea on how to remove it? This is my first build.

AdoreYouInAshXI what do you mean by "I can't get my barrel but out of the handguard" ?
@blueeyeddevil17 жыл бұрын
Use a long piece of wood and a hammer and gently tap it out from the muzzle end, working around the nut rather than from just one side. I'm assuming it was placed inside for shipping and somehow got wedged.

Just screw the handguard to the upper and pull. I know you probably figured it out by now, this is just for the people with the same problem.

I'm in the same boat right now with my 7" Helix...mine didnt come with the barrel nut wrench like I though they were supposed to (at least with Optics Planet they do) But right now half of the barrel nut is stuck inside the handguard...really tight. I'm a little furious about it, and not sure how I'm supposed to get the handguard back over it once its tight

What sort of barrel nut is that? I just bought a 7.5inch SOLO rail and will be needing a barrel nut. I am not sure where to get the right one.
@blueeyeddevil17 жыл бұрын
The barrel nut (proprietary) and all necessary hardware come with the rail. If yours didn't, the vendor screwed up. If the vendor or seller doesn't make good on it, contact SLR. They're very helpful for those kinds of things.

Quick question regarding the torque specs. Colt specifications say greater than 35ft-lbs but no more than 80. Is the nut good for more than 35 because of personal preference?
@moo_im_a_cow7 жыл бұрын
Buck-CGAV You get to a minimum of 35 ft lbs of torque and then from there you increase the torque by increments of 5 until the barrel nut and gas tube are aligned properly. This, of course, not exceeding 80 ft lbs. For certain hand guards out there such as the SLRs shown into this video indexing is not required since the gas tube will clear through regardless of what clock position the barrel nut is. This is why the installation video says 35 ft lbs. If you personally feel the need for it to be tighter then knock yourself out, just don't go crazy with it and pass the milspec torque. And remember if this is the first time install on the upper you'll want to season the threads by torquing to spec and loosening it at least 3 times. Good luck.

a few things: aero shell grease on barrel nut and receiver thread, (good idea to pre-stress them before final torque down), the torque wrench should be 90 degree to the installation wrench for accurate torque spec. blue lok-tie on the base of gas block set screws (never on the tip, other wise you have to torch it to get them off in the future) its a good idea to dimple them as well.
@VietPho4 жыл бұрын
90 Degrees when torquing I agree. Unless you're in the Army/Air Force where the manual have you do it inline with the torque wrench.
@Justin-dp9tw2 жыл бұрын
Blue loctite will do nothing to a gas block screw. After a few rounds blue loctite will immediately burn off. Need high temp thread locker for a gas block or do what I do and pin/dimple it.

@702Wolfi6 жыл бұрын
Does this rail/ anti rotational tap really use the gas tube as its anti rotation back up? If so, that's a major design fail. If that gas tube gets pressed to the side, you are going to ruin that gas tube in no time due to a bad gas tube/gas tube engagement. The gas key on the bolt carrier needs to be able to easily move the gas tube to where it wants it. There is only a hand full of videos on youtube that pay attention to gas tube/gas key engagement and yours isn't one of them. People who neglect this important step in assembling an AR lost all AR building credibility to me due to incompetency.

Can someone confirm?
@ZhuWrong2 жыл бұрын
@@VietPho Two years later, but yeah. Part of the annual inspection for military M4s is making sure that there is no excessive friction between the gas tube and gas key. Normally, it's because the barrel nut has loosed and started to pinch the gas tube, because they use the gas tube to key the nut in place, sorta like what's going on here. All it'll do is wear down the parts more quickly and there will be a poor seal between the tube and key. Personally, I think it's fine, everything should be perfectly centered assuming quality parts, just install it properly, and check it periodically like you would any other weapon.

what is the barrel tool used in this video?
@blueeyeddevil17 жыл бұрын
You probably figured this out by now, but it's an SLR barrel nut tool. It's ok, but when I used it a second time, I had to tap it onto the barrel nut flats gently. Apparently, it deformed ever so slightly when I used it the first time. Mine was for a .308 build. SLR is otherwise a super-top-notch company that makes fantastic pieces of ballistic art. Easily my favorite company when it comes to rails and muzzle brakes. And their lowers (manufactured in-house) cannot be beat for quality.

SLR is a scam , I orderd the wrong size hand guard and sent it back to get the right one . They said I had installed it and sent it back . It’s brand new so my friend ordered the same thing either one of us install it was just trying to get a shorter hand guard that’s all they sent both hand guard back . Don’t ever order from this company.

Their handguard is not worth the money . I have a 9.5 inch handguard that I got for 80 bucks and it's got thousands of rounds through it .
