SM64 - Wet-Dry World Box Glitch

Using the chuckya backwards momentum glitch, I push the block in Wet-Dry World out the wrong way. Then I experiment with it.

The reason Pannen got rekt instantly when he jumped in a certain spot is because of the out of bounds border. If Mario enters out of bounds, he instantly dies. The border is in every single stage, and here's two types: Flat Ground (like Bob-omb Battlefield) extends the border upward to the ground. Suspended (like Wing Mario over the Rainbow) has a border that extends down quite a height, and has a death barrier where being in its 2048 range will eject Mario out of the course. This is further explained on his Walls, Floors, and Heights (?) video.

can you please explain to me why mario dies (and loses his hat) when he goes out of bounds? Is it something the programmers did to prevent the game from screwing up, or is it an unintentional glitch? Please, i need to know how it works!

It's actually a form of instant descendtion (is this a word?), but as it goes way past the death barrier, Mario doesn't move an inch.

***** it has nothing to do with the death barrier. That is an entirely different thing, and wet dry world isn't a floating island, so there is no "abyss", it's just inaccessible territory. When you die by falling into an abyss, it's COMPLETELY different than dying here. Mario screams, iris out, even on instant descent. Not "freezes, loses hat, bowser head out". No offense, but it really annoys me when people think that it has to do with the death barrier because what that fact be obvious to them. An abyss is just ground programmed to kill mario when he falls to a certain height. The reason he dies in the video is because mario is not above any sort of ground to fall onto, and (i'm guessing) because of this the game can't update mario's position so he freezes, and as a result the programmers designed a fail-safe to boot mario out of the level so that you don't get stuck and have to reset the game. Why he loses his hat, however? That's something i'm still wondering. I appreciate the help, but my first comment is over 2 years old, and i've figured it out by now.

I think it's hat is a separate object that is constantly moved relative to Mario's head, and the object breaks when it moves out of bounds, but it's just my idea

Some collect all star codes increase your star count to up to 180 no matter your star count. There are only 120 stars in the game.

i'm pretty sure the game doesn't let mario go out of bounds under any circumstance, you'd probably just get stuck or something

Mario can't usually be pushed out of bounds. The two main ways to get out of bounds are shown in the video: get up from a ledge grab, or have the floor disappear from underneath you (in this case, the block became intangible because Mario jumped too far from it).
